Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1995. 1st. h/b. Fine, clipped d/j, signed on half title.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). For the first year of his solitary confinement in Beirut, Terry Waite was given nothing to read. During those days, not only did he write his autobiography in his head, but he also attempted to remember all the books, poems and prayers he had read during his life. Eventually his guards mellowed and he was given books. He received a wide variety ranging from Herodotus to the novels of Dorothy L. Sayers. Here Terry Waite has gathered together selections from the books he remembered, the books he received and some of the books he wished he had received. Some of the selections evoke personal memories and Terry Waite relates these stories as he takes the reader down the corridors of memory into the world of books.

Description:
Carlisle: Piquant, 2007. 1st. p/b. Near fine, donor's dedication on ffep.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). Leadership involves power and influence over others-but each of us is trapped by a psychological imperative inside us to use whatever control we have for our own ends. Where does this imperative come from? The author describes four ego patterns, formed during our childhood, which is the source of our drives and fears-Shaping, Defining, Adapting and Defending-and shows how they determine the needs we try to meet in our lives as leaders. Our natural instinct to use our leadership to meet our own needs rather than others' is what he terms 'defendedness'. One strategy of defended leadership is to build a 'front stage' and a 'back stage', which allows us to reveal or conceal aspects of our self according to how threatening we perceive our audience to be. While the best human audiences (in secure relationships, loving marriages, deep friendships and so forth) can go some way towards fulfilling our need… Read More

Grand Rapids, MI: Brazos, 2016. 1st. p/b. Near fine, small label residue on front cover, otherwise pristine.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). America's problem with race has deep roots, with the country's foundation tied to the near extermination of one race of people and the enslavement of another. Racism is truly our nation's original sin. ""It's time we right this unacceptable wrong,"" says bestselling author and leading Christian activist Jim Wallis. Fifty years ago, Wallis was driven away from his faith by a white church that considered dealing with racism to be taboo. His participation in the civil rights movement brought him back when he discovered a faith that commands racial justice. Yet as recent tragedies confirm, we continue to suffer from the legacy of racism. The old patterns of white privilege are colliding with the changing demographics of a diverse nation. The church has been slow to respond, and Sunday morning is still the most segregated hour of the week. In America's Original… Read More

Reading Colossians in context, ancient and contemporary, can perhaps give us new ears to hear.In this innovative and refreshing book Brian J. Walsh and Sylvia C. Keesmaat explain our own sociocultural context to then help us get into the world of the New Testament and get a sense of the power of the gospel as it addressed those who lived in Colossae two thousand years ago. Description:
London & New York: T. & T. Clark, 2004. 1st. p/b. Fine, as new.. 8vo (230 x 150 / 9"" x 6""). In recent years, scholars from both Christian and Jewish backgrounds have tried to rethink the relationship between earliest Christianity and its Jewish milieu; and Paul has emerged as a central figure in this debate. Paul and the Hermeneutics of Faith contributes to the scholarly discussion by seeing Paul and his Jewish contemporaries as, above all, readers of scripture. However different the conclusions they draw, they all endeavour to make sense of the same normative scriptural texts -- in the belief that, as they interpret the scriptural texts, the texts will themselves interpret and illuminate the world of contemporary experience. Francis Watson shows how three distinct bodies of literature in fact constitute a single intertextual field. It is therefore necessary to dismantle artificial scholarly boundaries between the Pauline letters, other extant Jewish writings of the period, and the scriptural… Read More

Description:
London: Simon & Schuster, 2010. 1st. p/b. New. B (198 x 129). From the end of the Baroque age and the death of Bach in 1750 to the rise of Hitler in 1933, Germany was transformed from a poor relation among western nations into a dominant intellectual and cultural force more influential than France, Britain, Italy, Holland, and the United States. In the early decades of the 20th century, German artists, writers, philosophers, scientists, and engineers were leading their freshly-unified country to new and undreamed of heights, and by 1933, they had won more Nobel prizes than anyone else and more than the British and Americans combined. But this genius was cut down in its prime with the rise and subsequent fall of Adolf Hitler and his fascist Third Reich-a legacy of evil that has overshadowed the nation's contributions ever since. Yet how did the Germans achieve their pre-eminence beginning in the mid-18th century? In this fascinating cultural history, Peter Watson goes back through time to explore the… Read More
