Spine is worn and split at head and tail; large chip, tears, and creases to unprinted rear wrap; shallow chip to final leaf, in no way affecting text; vertical fold throughout. Fair to good only, although complete and fairly clean. Provenance: Presentation inscription on the front wrap and CONTEMPORARY MARGINALIA ON SEVERAL PAGES BY A LADY OF CHARLESTON, Mrs. J.F. Edwards. This was Sarah Amelia Screven Edwards (1822-1855) of Charleston, a close relation of Bishop Gadsden by marriage. Her husband, James F. Edwards (1819-1862) was the nephew of Bishop Gadsden and shared two notable ancestors with him: Charleston mayor, John Edwards, and patriot, Gen. Christopher Gadsden. [24 cm.] Good plus. Tiny chips to spine ends, short closed tear and minor crease at base of front wrap. Front free endpaper has three very short tears due to slightly rough opening, but its conjugate, the titie leaf, is unharmed and the pamphlet is otherwise unopened. Excepting a sliver of foxing to base of one leaf, the interior is clean and bright. A nicer than usual copy. FIRST EDITION. Charles Nephew West (1844-1900) was, like Sidney Lanier, a native of Macon, Georgia and a Confederate veteran. He was an attorney and an active member of the Georgia Historical Society. It is holding well enough that the book is serviceable for reading as is, although a sympathetic backing is probably desirable. Spine also shows some chips, with some loss to the printed label. Some faint soiling to cloth and several thin, light marks to rear cover; just a hint of wear to head of spine; early name on front free endpaper; and a few traces of light marginal foxing, but interior is generally clean and binding is solid. A respectable copy. FIRST EDITION. A memoir of religious life in the South during Civil War and Reconstruction, by one of the leaders of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Confederate States. Wilmer (1815-1900) was elected Bishop of Alabama in 1861, and consecrated in Richmond the following year. He was still serving as Bishop of Alabama in the reunified church at the time of publication. A second, more common edition was issued later the same year.

Philadelphia: Uriah Hunt; New York: Mahlon Day and S. Wood & Sons, 1833. vii, [1], 165, [3 - blanks], 100 pages. Original quarter cloth and boards. [20.3 cm]. Printed spine label mostly worn away, spine stained and with small chip at head, corners worn, some light stains to boards. Foxing throughout, usually light and scattered, but a bit heavier on title, prelims, and a few other leaves. Several small corner chips and short marginal tears due to a lack of care in opening some of the leaves, in no way affecting text; much of the book remains unopened. Good only. The work was first published in Trenton in 1832 with the title beginning, "The Society of Friends Vindicated ... " A second edition was printed the following year by Gray in Philadelphia. The present volume uses Gray's sheets with a revised title page.
