Walchner (1799-1865), was professor at the University of Freiburg and, in 1825, was appointed professor of mineralogy, geology, and chemistry at the Polytechnic of Karlsruhe. He wrote many books and articles. "Very scarce. A technical treatment of mineralogy designed to be sufficient for the isolated amateur to study the subject. It covers all the basic elements including crystallography, physical and chemical properties, and a lengthy descriptive portion that covers the various mineral species. First edition in French (1st ed.: 1747) of the author's "first great work, which was received as an outstanding handbook of contemporary knowledge; never before had such a wealth of minerals been presented so systematically. Wallerius' clear and precise descriptions, which gave more weight to essential chemical properties than to exterior appearance, opened a new epoch in mineralogy. We learn from the Preface that there was considerable debate within the Oxford community regarding keeping St. Matthias's Day on the 24th or 25th of February in leap years. Wallis's text, from a manuscript written in 1684, was published to add support for the 24th as the preferable day. Fine copy.

Wallis (fl. 1771-73), who described himself as an architect, is known only as the author of three pattern-books. When the present book was first issued, it was accompanied by one leaf of Taylor ads. As copies were sold off over a period of many years, a new title-page was printed to accompany the already printed plates with the Taylors' new address ("Nearly opposite Great Turn-Stile, Holborn"), along with the most recently printed Taylor catalogue. This copy is accompanied by a 16-page Taylor catalogue datable to about 1800 (they were now located at No. 59 High Holborn). Nice copy. Bookplate of Edmond L. First edition of this fragmentary medieval rhyme book, reproduced here in a facsimile lithographic reprint of Wang Guowei's handwriting. Rhyme books are a kind of Chinese dictionary, in which characters are arranged according to their pronunciation. Because of this arrangement, they can be used to study the sound system of the language used at the time they were compiled. Characters that no longer rhyme in modern Chinese might still do so in medieval rhyme books, providing precious data for historical linguistics. During the Qing period, the earliest rhyme book accessible to scholars was Guangyun 廣韻 [Expanded Rhymes] from 1008 CE. In the early 20th century, even earlier sources came to light, most prominent of which was Qieyun 切韻 [Spelled Rhymes] from 601 CE. First edition of this important selection of previously largely unknown Yuan and Ming plays. In 1938, China and Japan were at war; the Chinese-controlled parts of Shanghai had fallen, and the front was moving eastward. When Changshu in Jiangsu was attacked by the Japanese, local bibliophile Ding Zuyin 丁祖蔭 lost his book collection. It resurfaced in neighboring Shanghai, where the foreign concessions were still free from Japanese occupation. Zhang Yuanji 張元濟 (1867-1959) of the Commercial Press (Shangwu yinshuguan 商務印書館) saw parts of it at the home of a Shanghai collector and made a discovery: the collection contained a set - part woodblock books, part manuscripts - titled Maiwang guan chaojiao ben gu jin zaju 脈望館鈔校本古今雜劇 [Copied and Collated Ancient and Modern Variety Plays of the Bookworm Residence].… Read More

Four vols. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Siyin zhai 四印齋, [1893?]. Lyrics, or ci (tz'u) 詞 poetry, was "one of the major poetic genres in China." Pieces in this genre were "originally song text[s] set to existing musical tunes." The genre "emerged in the T'ang dynasty in response to the popularity of foreign musical tunes newly imported from Central Asia" (The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature, vol. 1, 846-49). The genre is in particular associated with the Song dynasty. Writers covered in our collection include Song official Li Mixun 李彌遜 (1085-1153) and Liu Bingzhong 劉秉忠 (1216-74), whose talents were recognized by Khubilai Khan and died in Xanadu in Inner Mongolia. [China]: Saoye shanfang 埽 [read: 掃] 葉山房, [1798]. An edition of a history of the Northern Song (960-1127), originally part of a series of four historical works, as advertised on the title page. The "Eastern Metropolis" of the title refers to Kaifeng, capital of the Northern Song. Abridged Events of the Eastern Metropolis is a work in the so-called annals-biography (jizhuan ti 紀傳體) format. It recounts the history of nine reigns of the Northern Song. The authors, Wang Shang (d. 1150) and Wang Cheng, were father and son. In 1187, Wang Cheng presented Abridged Events of the Eastern Metropolis to the court, where Hong Mai 洪邁 (1123-1202) used it extensively in his own work.
