A tight and nice first edition of this unusual compilation that knows no bounds, with contributors including James G. Randall, Ida Tarbell, Carl Sandburg, Albert Beveridge, Robert Sherwood, Benjamin Thomas and a "Who's Who" cast of Lincoln writers both fiction and nonfiction. Among them is Edwin Markham, whose "Lincoln, the Man of the People" is found in this anthology. This volume bears a choice autograph addition: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a turn-of-the-century sepia-tone portrait of Markham (5½" X 8½", same trim size as flyleaf) and affixed to the lower edge of this is the close of a letter (ca. 5½" X irregular 2") boldly penned in brown ink entirely in the poet's hand -- "Let me see you if possible. / Fraternally yours, / Edwin… Read More

Really tight, quite sharp first edition -- front pastedown bears ownership signature of literature professor/critic John D. Soley (1935-2016), whose graduate thesis was "John Milton's Idea of the 'Right Poet'." A bit uncommon and a choice copy.

This publisher does NOT indicate edition in any verifiable fashion.

Waldmeir (1923-2013), academic, author and literary critic -- and the author's first reader of this study before publication. He's first cited in her acknowledgments -- and even shows he read this published version, for his occasional margin squiggles and a few miniscule pencilled margin notes remain. Great association copy.

Wagner authored "Hemingway and Faulkner: inventors/masters" (1975) and "Dos Passos: Artist as American" (1979), and recipient "Joe" was fellow academic and literary critic Joseph J. Waldmeir (1923-2013).

The son of Senator Robert F. Wagner was a three-term mayor of New York City (1954-65), U.S. Ambassador to Spain (1968-69) and envoy to the Vatican (1978-81). PS, 10" X 8", n.p., n.y. [1964]. From the collection of conductor and musicologist Paul Clinton Echols (1944-94), with his ownership name inkstamped on the title page and rear flyleaf and his lightly pencilled markings and margin notes on ten pagfes near the rear.
