Cyrus the Great was a 6th-century BC ruler known for establishing the First Persian Empire. His legacy was written about by numerous sources including Xenophon and the Old Testament Bible. Xenophon's account of the life of Cyrus was written as a fictional biography titled 'Cyropedia', written in the 4th-century BC to describe what the perfect ruler should be as well as portraying the way that the general public blindly follows its leader. This book is the earliest known accounts of the Achaemenid Empire and portions of the Persian Empire in Iran.

This 1785 Greek and Latin edition was published in Cambridge by Archdeacon, collected and translated by Thomas Hutchinson. (Greek text with Latin translation beneath, with first five words of the title transliterated from the Greek.)

A 19th-century Sino-Japanese woodblock printing of "Eighteen Histories Outlines" bound in the fukurotoji style. "Eighteen Histories Outlines" (Shiba shilue 十八史略) is a concise general history text created in the Yuan dynasty written by the Song Dynasty scholar Zeng Xianzhi, which achieved widespread popularity in the Ming dynasty. During the Meiji Restoration period, a demand for abbreviated histories arose in Japan leading to large-scale publications of 'Eighteen Histories Outlines' and creating "a profound impact on Japanese society, culture, and historiography, with a legacy extending into the contemporary period." This book was used as required material in primary schools and as a textbook for government officials in learning Chinese history.
