Description:
50 juan in 20 vols. 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [Hangzhou]: Zhejiang shuju 浙江書局, 1888. An edition of the annotated bibliography of philological works by Xie Qikun (1737-1802). Philology, known as the "lesser learning" (xiaoxue 小學) in imperial China, comprised studies of the Chinese script and its history, phonological treatises and lexicographical works, and to a certain extent grammar. The category was generally subsumed under the "classics" (jing 經) division in Chinese bibliographies, even though its purview extended beyond the classics to issues of general linguistics. Xie wrote his Examinations on Philology, or "lesser learning," to complement Zhu Yizun's 朱彝尊 (1629-1709) Jingyi kao 經義考 [Examinations on the Meaning of the Classics]. Zhu's bibliography of scholarly works on the Confucian classics was divided according to the classic to which a certain work referred. Under this scheme, Zhu included, in terms of lexicography and related disciplines, only books…

Description:
12 juan in two vols. 109; 112 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Siyin zhai 四印齋, [1888?]. Pocket-sized edition of this famous collection of lyrics. Lyrics, or ci (tz'u) 詞 poetry, was "one of the major poetic genres in China." The genre "emerged in the T'ang dynasty in response to the popularity of foreign musical tunes newly imported from Central Asia." Lyrics are particularly associated with the literature of the Song dynasty (The Indiana Companion to Traditional Chinese Literature, vol. 1, 846-49). Xin Qiji (1140-1207) was a Song official who fought the invading Jurchens. His lyrics are imbued with "patriotic sentiment" (Jia, Zhonghua guobao tudian, 614). Our book is a "reduced-size" (suo 縮) version, with some emendations, of the edition published by Guangxin Academy 廣信書院 in 1299 (Dade 大德 3). This edition, in turn, was based on the so-called Xinzhou 信州 edition of the Song period. The Guangxin Academy had been founded at Xin's…

Two vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. Beijing: Guo li Beiping yan jiu yuan 國立北平研究院, 1936. First edition of this work on Beijing's temples. In 1930, the Historiographical Research Group of the National Research Academy of Beiping, as Beijing was then called, decided that "in preparation for producing a gazetteer for Beijing, the Buddhist temples, altars, Confucian temples, shrines, and halls will be surveyed by district and rubbings taken of stone inscriptions, for use in the [gazetteer's] treatises on temples and epigraphy. Personnel will be dispatched to survey, compile, photograph, draw a layout of each temple, trace stone inscriptions, as well as collect historical sources." Our book was one of the results. This work is focused on mentions of temples in earlier literature, complemented with the editors' notes on the history of the temples. They note changes in the names of temples, as well as in their functions. The literature used include the major works on…

Numerous fine full-page woodcuts throughout. 67; 63 folding leaves (pagination continuous). Two vols. Tall 8vo, orig. wrappers, orig. stitching. Haichang: Jiang shi bie xia zhai, 1929. A critical and augmented illustrated edition of the Daoist religious text Lord Wenchang's Tract on Unpublicized Merits 文昌帝君陰隲文. Wenchang is an important deity in Chinese popular religion, often worshipped by students in search of academic success. This careful edition reflects his standing among the literati in late imperial China. The editor and author of the critical notes is Xu Guangqing (1801-62), a philologist and physician from Haining, west of Shanghai who also authored several works of classical philology. For many years, he worked as a tutor for his neighbor Jiang Guangxu 蔣光煦 of the Biexia Zhai 別下齋 studio. When Jiang published his eponymous collectanea, Xu helped collate it. Lord Wenchang's Tract on Unpublicized Merits was published as part of that collectanea in 1844. Our copy is…

Description:
31 folding leaves. Small 8vo, orig. wrappers (somewhat soiled & frayed), orig. stitching. [Beijing]: Jing hua ri bao she 京話日報社, n.d. First edition of this novel on an early phase of the Chinese Republican revolution of 1911. The setting of this novel is the movement to oppose the nationalization of the projected railway between Chengdu in Sichuan province and Wuhan in Hubei. After decades of building railways by granting concessions to foreign firms, the local government and elite in Sichuan raised money to fund their own railway project in central China. When the central government in Beijing in 1911 proposed to nationalize the railway project and raise money from foreign banks, people in Sichuan revolted against what they saw as another act of the Qing government giving in to foreign interests. The revolt contributed to the later uprisings that toppled the Manchu dynasty early in the following year. Our book fictionalizes these events, focusing on the character of Duanfang (1861-1911),…
