[New Haven, 1929].. [3],66,[3] leaves of typescript, text on recto only, plus two inserted sections of typed notes, eleven leaves containing programs or pamphlets, two leaves containing four photo-postcards, and one large photograph. Original blue cloth. Front hinge heavily cracked, cloth fraying, board nearly detached. Corners heavily worn. Contemporary manuscript corrections to typescript. Internally clean. Most of the tipped-in pamphlets in very good or better condition. A unique and interesting typescript documenting a Yale senior trip to visit various industries. The author, A.R. Dunning, Class of 1929, writes in the Foreword: "In writing my reminiscenes [sic] of the inspection trip, I am afraid that I have not followed a definite enough course of procedure, but have allowed myself to wander about aimlessly, writing what I felt when and how it pleased me....And I am sure that I will better appreciate my own childish viewpoints herein expressed, when, as an old man I look back and find one… Read More

[New Haven: Various publishers, as noted below, 1838-1842].. Various paginations, as given below. Contemporary three-quarter calf and marbled boards, spine gilt with raised bands, marbled edges. Boards lightly rubbed and worn with some splitting to joints. Some occasional foxing, toning, soiling to text. About very good. A sammelband of twelve Yale-related catalogues, all published between 1838 and 1842, and likely compiled by Steuben Rexford, member of the Yale class of 1842. Included are copies of the Yale College catalogues listing officers and students for each of the four years that Rexford attended; catalogues for each of the campus literary societies - the Linonian Society, Brothers in Unity, the Calliopean Society, and Psi Upsilon - listing the names of members, past and present; as well as the published catalogues of three of the societies' libraries. Tipped in among the college catalogues is a single leaf on which is written in manuscript a poem, perhaps by Rexford, for what was likely the… Read More

Cleburne, Tx: T.L. Sanders, 1899. 129pp. Original printed wrappers. Small chip to top corner of front wrapper and toe of spine. Small stain to top corner of first few leaves. Last few leaves and rear wrapper chipped at lower corner, not affecting text. Contents tanned, as usual. Good plus. The autobiographical story of a Confederate soldier from an area described as having "Carolina's tallest peaks" on its southeastern horizon. Most names in the story appear to be fictional. Includes his capture at Kennesaw Mountain in June 1864; as a prisoner of war at Camp Douglas, Illinois; his journey home; and how he came to join an infantry company. Yeager (1842-1940) served with the 29th Tennessee Infantry (Confederate) until his capture. After the war he was a lawyer in Tennessee, then a newspaperman and farmer in Johnson County, Texas. Rare. Not in any of the standard reference works on the Civil War or Tennessee

Impressa en la ciudad Imperial de Augusta [i.e. Trier]: con facultad de la Sacra Magestad del Emperador, 1626.. [16]pp. Small folio. Dbd. Contemporary manuscript docketing on p.[16] and contemporary ink underscoring on p.[7]. Some loss, repaired in silk, from chipping at gutter and from worming in several leaves, the latter affecting some text but not exceeding 1 x 1 inch in area. Closed tears in final leaf, repaired with very early paper on verso. Light staining and foxing. Overall very good. The original Spanish translation of an important invective against Louis XIII during the first phase of France's involvement in the Thirty Years' War. At the time of this publication in 1626, France had actively begun to support the Protestant side in the conflict, concerned with the political threat of the Hapsburg states that surrounded it on three sides (in Spain and Spanish-controlled Flanders to the south and north and the Holy Roman Empire in Germany to the East). In 1624, Cardinal Richelieu was appointed… Read More

Description:
Boston, 1862. 267pp. Original cloth. Front joint splitting, some chipping at spine extremities, front board warped and dampstained affecting top margin of contents throughout, some tanning. A sound copy. Inscribed: "To the Attorney General in the Qeen [sic] v. William Palmer 1856 - from G.A. Somerby, Boston, Mass. U.S." The DNB devotes a long article to the character and celebrated case of William Palmer, the notorious "Rugeley poisoner." Palmer was tried at the Old Bailey on May 14, 1856. The attorney-general in the case was Sir Alexander Cockburn, apparently the recipient of the present volume. The case of William Palmer is cited in the Preface, since it was believed that Palmer used strychnine in murdering at least one of his victims, but the chemists were unable to detect any trace of that poison in the body of the deceased. In the present case, Hersey was convicted and hanged in Massachusetts for the murder of his fiancé's sister, whom he had impregnated. According to the Preface, as of the… Read More

Description:
New York, 1856. Two volumes. 482; 576pp., plus eleven lithographs including four portraits, view of the mission, facsimile of a letter, and five maps and plans (two folding). Modern half calf and marbled boards, leather label. Minor foxing, folding map in first volume neatly repaired on fold. Very good. The second printing, issued the year after the first. This is the first scholarly work on Texas after annexation. The author, a lawyer from Tennessee, came to Texas in 1845, befriended Sam Houston, and served in the Mexican-American War. "In spite of its detractors, Yoakum's history remains a necessary source. Modern historians rally to its support, with reservations. Gambrell said Yoakum managed to achieve 'a degree of objectivity unusual for the amateur historian, and literary style not often equalled by the professional'" - Jenkins. HOWES Y10, "aa." RADER 3773. New York: Printed by James Parke, 1752. [6],iii,488,[1]pp. including errata leaf. Folio. Half calf and marbled boards in antique style, leather label. Small old ink library stamp on verso of titlepage, some toning and minor foxing, marginal dampstaining to some leaves. With a remarkable contemporary poem, "Epitaph on Thomas Paine," apparently an original composition, penned on two of the terminal blanks. Very good. One of the earliest compilations of the laws of colonial New York, and the first digest of the colonial statutes in force at that time. The work was prepared by William Smith (author of the HISTORY OF NEW YORK) and William Livingston, both prominent New York attorneys. The work is also notable for the subscribers list, which includes prominent names such as Benjamin Franklin, Charles Pinckney, and James De Lancey, among others. The book belonged to James Smith and Peter Smith of Dutchess County, New York, who have noted ownership on the last blank leaf. In what is evidently the same… Read More

Clayville, N.Y.: E.J. Clemens, [ca. 1882].. Seventy wooden puzzle pieces, completed size 12 x 16 inches. Evenly toned, scattered stains, light edge wear to most pieces. Printed image beginning to peel at the edges of some pieces, more severe on verso of pieces. Good plus, in a later fitted wooden case with latch (lacking the original box). A detailed dissected sectional map of New York State, with each county forming its own puzzle piece. The map is one prepared by G.W. & C.B. Colton based on previous maps published by their predecessor, Joseph H. Colton. It depicts the State of New York delineated by county, with towns, cities, railroads, canals, and some topographical details marked, as well as insets of New York City and Niagara Falls. The publisher of the puzzle, Rev. E.J. Clemens of the small town of Clayville, New York (south of Utica), produced numerous such dissected puzzles of the country and its states in the late-19th century under the banner of "Clemens' Silent Teacher," with an aim to… Read More
