First edition thus, first printing, following the very scarce first edition of 1878, of this biography of Zhuge Liang (181-234), heir to the military legacy of Sun Tzu and the greatest strategist of the Three Kingdoms period. The text is accompanied by diagrams of the elaborate, highly flexible troop formations which defined Zhuge Liang's contribution to military theory and made his writings essential reading for generations of commanders including Mao Zedong. First edition, in which Yarranton, an engineer and agriculturalist, "proposed many schemes of improvement: fire prevention, establishing linen manufacture, ironworks in Hampshire, a land bank to finance trade, and public granaries. He suggested making the Warwickshire Stour navigable up to Shipston and the Cherwell to Banbury so as to shorten the distance for carriage of goods between navigations in the Severn and Thames catchments. Another proposal concerned the River Dee up to Bangor Bridge, Flintshire. These to some extent anticipated the great changes brought about a century later by the development of still-water canals. [1970s]. Photograph of Harold Wilson meeting Mike Yarwood, who was famed for his Wilson impersonations, inscribed "To Lady Falkender, sincerely Mike Yarwood". Yarwood was one of the leading television personalities of the Wilson era. The photograph was taken 29 September 1973; the inscription must follow Falkender's elevation to the Lords in 1974. Marcia Falkender was Wilson's political secretary and closest aide; the photograph has been acquired directly from her estate. Black and white photograph (253 x 204 mm), mounted on paper. Rather creased, backing paper soiled; in good condition overall.

One of the last flashpoints of the Great Game, inscribed by the author First edition, presentation copy, inscribed to Richard Assheton Cross, first viscount Cross, on the verso of the half-title: "Viscount Cross with the Author's Kind Regards. 11 June 1888", also with the engraved armorial bookplate of the Cross family on the front pastedown. This is a first-hand account of a crucial period in the Russian conquest of Central Asia and The Great Game. "The book describes the activity of the commission by a British officer, in 1885 in northwestern Afghanistan and then their long travel back to Lahore through Afghanistan. The closing chapters deal with the return of the mission in 1887 for the actual demarcation of the frontier" (Yakushi). First edition, inscribed by the author to a fellow Maine suffragist on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. Ann Greely, with kind regards, the author, Dec. 25 1890", with Greely's book label to front pastedown. This edition is now uncommon, especially inscribed, the present copy in notably attractive condition. The recipient, Ann Jarvis Greely (1831-1914), would have been known to Yates through their shared engagement in the suffrage lecture circuit. Greely was active in her local suffrage movement and organised a series of suffrage lectures and a "woman's rights" ball in Ellsworth in 1857, which included Susan B. Anthony as a speaker. From her mid-20s she was, like Yates, an avowed and outspoken temperance worker and was active in the anti-slavery movement. In 1851 she opened the Old Stand, a millinery shop on Main Street, thereby becoming one of the first recognized businesswomen of Maine. Of particular interest are the large number of advertisements offering a feel for life in the territory during the early 1950s. Copies of the first edition are seldom encountered in commerce, and WorldCat notes just two institutionally (British Library and Toronto Public Library). In her guide, Helen Eva Yates (1900-1993) purposefully adopts a relaxed tone perhaps better suited to the emerging middle-class travel market than some other contemporary guides. "A very interesting work by a medical man who travelled extensively in Egypt c. 1840... Yates also provides an extensive general commentary on political events in Syria, Crete and Egypt in addition to the ordinary account of his travels" (Blackmer). The Scottish doctor William Holt Yates remains a frustratingly shadowy figure. We do know that he was a member of the Royal Asiatic Society (admitted 1834) and president of both the Royal Medical and Royal Physical Societies of Edinburgh, and senior physician to the General Dispensary at Aldersgate in the City, during a time when the young David Livingstone was taking extracurricular studies there. The autograph note from Yeats is dated July 1904 and reads "To James Byrne with kind regards from W. B. Yeats". A letter from John Quinn to Byrne explains that "at the request of Mr Yeats I take pleasure in sending you herewith a copy, No 96, with an autograph card from him inserted, of his last play in verse... Mr Yeats is sending a few copies of this edition to special friends on this side". Quinn has provided an additional annotation in his own hand which reads "I got it printed for him here and it's a much finer book than the English edition". These stories constitute an early attempt at independent mythography in the Celtic vein, introducing the wandering mystic "gleeman" Red Hanrahan, who would return periodically in Yeats's later poetry such as "The Tower". The publication features the first drawing by Robert Gregory used by the press, "showing the four aces of a pack of playing-cards spread over the four provinces of Ireland - the four green fields of Irish folklore" (Genet, p. 62), which feature in the stories as cards that Hanrahan bewitches into a pack of hounds. The Trembling of the Veil was the second of Yeats's seven autobiographical works, and was described by Arthur Symons as "an absolute masterpiece: far & away the best thing [Yeats] has ever done" (Ross, p. 559). The following year, Yeats was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature. Number 40 of 50 copies, and, though uncalled for, this copy is signed by "George" Hyde-Lees, (1892-1968), the author's wife. Mosada was Yeats's first published work, and was first published in 1886 as an offprint from the Dublin University Review. That edition, of around 100 copies, is now "exceedingly rare" (Wade p. 18). Yeats's wife was originally known as "Georgie", until Yeats declared the name insufferable. George managed the Cuala Industries with Yeats's sisters Lily and Lolly after her husband's death, increasingly on her own as Lily's health failed and Lolly died suddenly in 1940. The second separate printing of the text, it is based on the text as it appeared in The Wanderings of Oisin (1889), and incorporating the corrections that were made by the author in his own copy.
