Early owner's signature on the front flyleaf reads, "Mary Leigh Suhling / September 1935 / Lynchburg, Virginia." Over 100 pages pertains to the Civil War and its aftermath. Chapter 12 (pages 77-94) is on the Battle of Lynchburg. The last section (page 241-449) is on "Some Lynchburg Families and Genealogies." Illustrated with full-page photos. Quite scarce.

Yardley was editor of the "Daily Tar Heel" and worked for the "New York Times" and the Greensboro "Daily News." Stated First Edition.

The binding is a bit rubbed and worn and has some pale spots. Spine is rubbed along the hinges. Corners bumped. Inner hinges secure. No copyright date. The Preface is dated 1880 and the book was given as a Christmas gift in 1897. "Dr. & Mrs. Haight / from Kate Stuart / Xmas 1897." Laid in loosely is a lovely card which appears to be hand-drawn or painted and bears the name "Mrs. Haight." (The card looks to be outlined in pencil and then hand painted or colored). A sound copy. The text has some off-setting from other pages in a few places.

Cherry, Secretary (or 'Sec & Tres'?) / Trinity College / Historical Society / Durham NC 1912." R. Gregg Cherry (1891-1957) was the 61st Governor of North Carolina (1945-1949) during WWII. He was a lawyer and had been the mayor of Gastonia and had earned his Bachelor's degree in law from Trinity College, now Duke University. Brantley York (1805-1891) was the Methodist minister who founded the institution which would become Trinity College and Duke. Curiously, this volume was signed by the future Governor of N.C. who was born the same year that Rev. York died.

There is heavy foxing and some smudging to the endpapers. Early owner's name on the front flyleaf. The text is toned and has occasional finger smudging, stains, etc. A few pages show some damping. A reading or reference copy only.
