Description:
Gokirakuji Kamakura Japan: Getumei-Kai, 1958. First edtion. Hardcover. Library stamp and discard stamp to front fixed endpaper, library stamp on title page, else fine. 66 pp., including 25 pages of color samples on cloth, 4 to a page and 2 color woodblock prints; quarto blue and red cloth with gilt title, hinged cloth-covered box. The author's stated intention in preparing these samples of natural dyes was to facilitate a revival of the lost art of natural dyes which had given way in modern times to the convenience of chemical dyes. The art reached its peak during the Nara period (645-792) but by the end of the Meiji Period at the close of the 19th century had begun to decline. Each dye sample is captioned in English, French, and Japanese. Edition of 200 numbered copies, this #137.
