Description:
December 1963. A striking homemade book, with wonderful watercolored illustrations filling the borders of every page of this hagiographic account of St. Barthomew. Oblong, 20 by 27 cm. Unpaginated, four leaves, with five pages of content, including front cover. The illustrations are folk art-ish and winsomely naive. We would suspect that the artist was not an accomplished artist, but he worked expertly within his artistic limitations to create something especially pleasing and immediate in its artistry. Cameos include depictions of monks, seals, skiffs, a cathedral and chapel, coastline, blackbirds, etc. The images are cleverly integrated, and they capture convincingly the raw coastal beauty of Farne, which is a group of North Sea islands off the coast of Northumberland, in Northern England. Light wear.

Description:
New York: McLoughlin Brothers. Very Good Minus. N.d., 1890s. Large 4to. 30 by 25 cm. Unpaginated, 16 pp. including wrap covers. Charming chromolithographic illustrations to each nursery rhyme snippet that accompanies each letter. In this book McLoughlin, a master a repackaging, drew from his overstuffed backlist treasure trove for excerpted illustrations and verse, so we have "F" for "A Frog he would a-wooing go", "K" is for "Old King Cole", etc. But some of the rhymes and illustrations may just be new to this book, such as "Z", which is "a Zany, Who was a great fool". Whatever, the case, it is an winsome, and sweet, compilation. On the inside rear cover, where in such books there is often an arithmetic piece, is a rendering of "10 little Nigger Boys". This, as well as the inside front cover, is illustrated in two toned instead of full color. Cover heavily soiled, with minor abrasions at corners. Light soiling within.…

N.d., circa 1919. 54 pp, with charming chromotypographic color illustrations throughout of animals primarily but also toys, children, fairy tale-like characters. The color is a little richer than average for French chromotypography of the period and genre. Boards have some minor wear and light soil darkening around edges. Perhaps a slight bend to boards. Otherwise clean and tight. A very good copy overall.

New York: Sam'l Gabriel Sons & Company. First Edition. NA. Fine. N.d., circa 1920. 8vo. 21.5 by 15 cm. Unpaginates, but five leaves, or ten pages, including cover, each with the fabric folded over as in a typical traditional Japanese publication. Lovely color vignette illustrations of objects and animals shown to represent each letter, or fruits used to demonstrate quantity in the numbering section. Pristine copy. Uniquely clean -- we have never seen a fabric book like this one so spotless and fresh! Only very trivial fault are two flattened crease lines on the front cover.

Description:
Rotterdam, The Netherlands, 1948. Hardcover. Leatherette. . Very Good. Immensely charming homemade book about working in a doll factory for a decade, part of which was in Wartime Netherlands, with actual fabric pasted on to represent the painted human figures' attire. 8vo. 22 by 18 cm. Unpaginated, 41 pages with content, including title. The front cover has a charming face of a doll head wearing a bonnet, floral and foliage pieces suggestive of the body, all created with fabric cut-outs, with just touches of paint daubs for the facial features and shadow detailing elsewhere. Because of this cover, and the mixed media of watercoloring and fabric detailing within the book, we regard this manuscript as genuine folk art, and folk art that amplifies the celebration of the doll factory that is the central thrust of the manuscript. The story is of a young woman, Margot, showing up to begin work at the factory, the small contretemps experienced starting out, the company's move to a new location.…

Description:
Nurnberg: Gabriel Nicolaus Raspe, 1786. First Edition. Cloth over Marbled Boards. Very Good Plus. 4to. xxvi, 194 pp. With 20 hand-colored plates. The text pages have a light ink-blot-like foxing in many of the leaves where the text is. Most will not find this disconcerting, as since it seldom shows up in the margins, it is surely the result of a chemical reaction involving the paper composition and the ink over an extended period of time. In other words, it is to be found probably in virtually all extant copies. The plates are not only spared this, but they are immaculate, their coloring breathtaking.

Description:
Paris: Chez Bossange, Masson et Besson, 1802 (An X). Full Calf. Very Good. 17 by 10 cm. 12mo. viii, 451 pp. Nine plates, one of which is a folding and contains two global maps. These plates are lettered up to "K", with the folding map plate given as G and H. No "J" plate present but no evidence of removal, and we believe the book in fact contains all the plates that were initially there. This is a work that went through multiple editions, though, and other printings had both more and fewer plates. Much of the text is organized in a question and answer format, as was a common pedagogical technique in primers of the day. Geography is the most extensive topic, but as the title suggests, the work ranges over a wide range of scientific topics, as well as some of the arts. The contemporary calf has a small chip on the front board and considerable wear elsewhere but remains attractive and viable. Prize (Prix) marking in gilt on rear cover. A few leaves affected by light…

Description:
NA. Very Good. N.p. N.d., circa 1890. Closed, 10 by 5.5 cm. You pull out tabs on each side and out spreads the bunched cray paper, just like the bellows of an accordian. Without stressing the cray paper -- risking tearing, the sides stretch to about 8 cm apart. Chromolithographic printing on the sides, with gilt for the buttons and keys, red hearts in the upper corners, decorative floral vignettes as might be found on an actual accordian, and printed underneath one of the keyboard tabs, "To my sweet Valentine". Intended as a charming novelty that might lovingly be given to an accordianist. Small cracks down center of paper from use.

St. Paul, Minnesota: W. C. Riley. Third Edition (30,000). Cloth. Very Good. N.d., late 19th century. Oblong, 16 by 24 cm. A leporello with 30 panels, full of views of the sights, urban and natural scenery, with a variety of lay-outs per page, with sometimes a single image, other times, several, arranged horizontally and vertically, etc. The printing of the illustrations used a photo lithographic process, and the leaves have a glossiness to them, with here and there arts and crafts period floral decoration in the margins. Description:
NA. Good. Negative campaign flyer against Thomas Milner Gibson (1806-1884) who was a member of Parliament representing Ipswich, in Suffolk, from 1837 to 1839, as a Tory, and then Manchester, 1841-1857, as a Liberal. The flyer appears to be attacking Gibson on the basis of his switching his party loyalties, and so we would conjecture that it was created in his first race to gain the seat in Manchester, or 1841. But it could have come from when Gibson was running in Ipswich, perhaps in 1838, as it mentions "[Fitzroy] Kelly", the other Tory MP from Ipswich. Regardless, the item is a novel piece of electoral ephemera. Measuring 11 by 14 cm, oblong, and with some foxing and flattened dog-ear creasing.

New York: Lord & Taylor. Wraps. Very Good. N.d., circa early to mid-1940s. (Reference to Office of Price Administration, which existed between 1941 and 1947, and references to "Admiral Byrd Cloth", among other things, suggest the earlier part of this period.) 30 by 14 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pp. including wrap covers. Scarce, with no copies appearing on OCLC FirstServe. Loosely strung story about a cute cub who decides not to hibernate so that he can find out what autumn and winter are like in New York City, and all the fun he has as a result. On the rectos is narrated the story, while on the facing versos junior fashion items are illustrated and described, with the descriptions sometimes making allusion to the accompanying story. This was from a time when children in the city were dressed up in city clothes like miniature adults, and even play clothes, in which children could be children, had a certain flair that has largely vanished from our fashion scene. The illustration of both…
