Heavily trimmed and rebound in the late eighteenth or early nineteenth century, with marbled edges and endpapers, and dark marbled full calf with gilt titles to a red label and further gilt decoration to spine. Coloured armorial bookplate of A. Fenwyke [Fenwick] to front pastedown, contemporary with the binding. A mark to the facing flyleaf where another bookplate has been removed. A large contemporary ink inscription to verso of first title page reading "Company | Avoid Evil." Occasional very light pencil underlining and marginal marks. Fine in a price-clipped dust-jacket, which has wear at spine tips, hinges, and front flap fold. A scarce title, especially in dust-jacket. Another case for the legendary detective partnership of Hercule Poirot and best friend Captain Arthur Hastings, a military man of great bravery who faced death unflinchingly when confronted by 'The Big Four' and who, when forced to choose between Poirot and his wife in the novel of the same name, promptly chose Poirot.

A companion to the classic 'Plain Words' (1948), originally drafted to provide instructions on the correct use of English for the Civil Service.

Contents clean, edges a little soiled, label neatly removed from pastedown, cloth with light edge wear, lower corner bumped. A very good copy. This is the true first of this title, a pirate issue, published about two months before the authorised edition. Stewart [324].

A fine, as-new copy. Not exactly bedtime reading! Ambler's examination of what kind of mentality is required to become a killer, first published in 1963.

During World War II, Izzard served with distinction as a Naval Intelligence officer and commando with Ian Fleming's 30 Assault Unit. Highly decorated for gallantry and awarded an OBE, Fleming based elements of his debut novel Casino Royale and its protagonist James Bond on Lt. Cdr. Izzard, especially a card game in which he found himself playing poker against covert Nazi intelligence agents at a casino in Pernambuco, Brazil. Post-war, Izzard returned to journalism as a foreign correspondent - in India to cover the partition crisis, and for a failed search in 1946 for a monster lizard 'the buru' in a remote Assamese valley. Youth culture novel about London life in the late 1950s. Basis for the 1986 cult teen drama starring Patsy Kensit, Ray Davies, Sade, Tenpole Tudor and David Bowie, who recorded the title song. Mod revival band The Jam recorded the single 'Absolute Beginners' in 1981; MacInnes' novel was a favourite of songwriter Paul Weller's, being chosen by him when he appeared on Desert Island Discs.

Interior bright with minor spotting throughout, concentrated mostly to endpapers, preliminaries, and rear leaves. Toning to edges, especially top. Rubbing to boards, mostly to joints and black decoration. Spine also slightly toned. Moderate wear to binding extremities. Very good. London's novel about an unsociable log cabin-dweller turned famous boxer.

An official report, and the personal diary of the British ambassador sent from Madras to negotiate with King Kirti Sri of Kandy (Sri Lanka) over assistance against Dutch settlers in 1762. Printed from the government records of Madras for the first time.
