Description:
Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, disbound, 35 pp. Mostly disbound, a bit soiled, folds and creases at edges, ink smudge on title, aging and toning throughout. Noah Worcester (1758-1837) was born in New Hampshire and would become a noted a clergyman. He published several important tracts on religious subjects, and appears to have had some unorthodox views of the holy trinity, and published a few articles on the subject. However, around the time of the War of 1812, Worcester reflected on the effects of war, and became a pacifist. In 1814 he first published his "A Solemn Review of the Custom of War", which would continue in several other editions. In this work he argued that the violence and destruction of war was inconsistent with Christian values. He would found the Massachusetts Peace Society, and this group would be in the forefront of a rather popular antiwar movement that emerged in America around the time of the War of 1812. ANB. OCLC.

Description:
A Tract: On the Arrogant Pretentions of the Orthodox Clergy [New York? 1824]. 8vo, pamphlet, stitched, 8 pp. Some dampstaining, normal aging and browning, previous owners signature on the first page, faint pencil notations on first page; otherwise very good.Scarce tract (OCLC locates five copies) that warns Americans of the dangers of the risks to the separation of church and state from the growing power of the clergy. He refers to them as a "religious aristocracy", who want to see a church establishment emerge that has an alliance with the state. He also indicates that this group calls themselves evangelicals, and their aim is to take control of civil authority. He reminds us that in every age, priests have been intolerant to intellectual inquiry, and show only intolerance to opposing views. The signature on the title page is of Rev. Nathaniel Flectcher (1764?-1852), who had at least one sermon published in 1812. OCLC.

Description:
Pamphlet with original pictorial wrappers in cloth case. 32 pp. Illustration on back wrapper. Pamphlet is disbound. Front wrapper has chips and tears along edge, but not affecting text. Back wrapper has long tear below the image. Contemporary account of the riot at the Astor Place Opera House that claimed the lives of 22 people and wounded 36 others. The major factor in the riot was the rivalry and quarrels between the well-known American actor Edwin Forrest, and the English actor William C. Macready. Some anti-British and class prejudice also played a part in this incident. Forrest and Macready had been openly feuding, and some felt the American was treated badly by Macready while he was on tour in Europe. Their quarrels spilled over into the press, and on May 7th Macreadyā€™s performance at the Astor Place Opera House had to be aborted because of a hostile audience. While Macready wanted to end his engagement he was persuaded by several prominent New Yorkers, including Washington Irving, to… Read More

Description:
12mo publishers boards, 162 pp.Binding worn, and one signature is somewhat separated, but still in tact. Early owner’s signature and comments on endpaper; the usual browning, foxing and staining. This work was first published by Smith in 1799 almost forty years after his captivity. The present edition was reprinted from the second edition in 1831. The story begins when Smith was part of a 300 man group assigned to build wagon roads near Fort Loundon in the province of Pennsylvania. While seeking provisions, Smith and a companion were attacked by Indians. His friend was killed and scalped, and Smith ended up the prisoner of the Delawares. He kept a diary about his many experiences, and shares observations on how Indians conduct war. Although he sees some Indian ways as cruel and inhuman, he also appears to have respect for them. He also reminds the reader that some white men are as cruel and inhuman as the Indians. He mentions an incident when a group of white men entered an Indian town in Ohio,… Read More

Description:
12mo, rebound with maroon cloth with leather spine and label, new endpapers, portrait frontispiece, 234, [34]pp. Some dampstaining, foxed; otherwise very good in a fine modern binding. While Crockett is cited as the author, the work is generally ascribed to Augustus S. Clayton. Crockett (1786-1836) frontiersman, Indian fighter, scout, politician, and hero of the Alamo, was regarded as a living legend. Long before the Alamo, he was a popular folk hero, and served a couple of terms in Congress. In 1834, he took a celebrated tour of the North, which is the subject of the current work, and visited Philadelphia, New York, Boston and Baltimore. After being voted out of office, probably for his well known anti-Andrew Jackson sentiments, he left Tennessee and would eventually be drawn to the struggle for Texas independence. In 1836, he was killed in the heroic defense of the Alamo.

Significant history of European expansion into the New World called by Howes the "best contemporary account." While Howes attributes the work to William Burke, his more famous kinsman, Sabin believes the work was in fact written by Edmund Burke. This was a very popular book on the subject, with nine editions published before 1800. There is great detail on the climate, inhabitants, history, and differences of the various European settlements. Description:
12mo leather 306,[2] pp. Binding worn at edges and spine, covers slightly bent. Foxing throughout, but text is quite legible. Bownas (1676-1763) made two trips to America. The first was in 1702 (see page 91), and the second was in 1726 (see page 214). Along the way he had a public dispute with George Keith and William Bradford, and ended up doing some time in jail because of it. Book contains descriptive material on encounters with Indians, and actually includes some commentary on the Indian captivity of Elizabeth Hanson (230-232pp.) According to Sabin, it also includes an amusing account of the Labadies, a Shaker-like community. This work originally published in London in 1756, appeared in several editions through 1846.

Engraved double page map (23 1/2" x 20 1/2"), partially hand colored, large decorative title cartouche, edges with two columns of text. Archival tape repair in middle of the bottom margin, normal aging; otherwise about near fine. Very nice impression. Peter Schenk (1693-1775) was the son of Peter Schenk the Elder, another well-known Dutch cartographer. He was a fairly prolific mapmaker, and appears to have been active in Leipzig. The present map is bright and attractive, and is of the town and region of Weissenfels. It is very similar to a map published by Mathew Seutter a few years earlier. The map includes a larger decorative cartouche, which contains the title. Bagrow: History of Cartography.
