Description:
Philadelphia: Zachariah Poulson, Jun., in Fourth Street, near the University, for Caleb Buglass, book- binder, on the East side of Front-Street, between Market and Arch Streets, 1788.. 12pp. Stitched as issued, first and last leaf detached and loose. Embossed institutional stamp on titlepage. Light wear. Good. Untrimmed. Catechism of the Protestant Episcopal Church, together with the alphabet and a hymn "on the Nativity of our Saviour, and another for Easter-Day." This work is notable for listing bookbinder Caleb Buglass in its imprint. Buglass was an important binder in 18th-century Philadelphia who bound copies of the first American Episcopal Book of Common Prayer (an example is listed in the Papantonio American bookbinding exhibition catalogue). This is also the only American imprint noted in NAIP, ESTC, or OCLC which bears his name. Scarce, with only a handful of copies in ESTC. EVANS 21409. ESTC W10091.

Description:
[Mainly New York, Philadelphia, & Boston, 1810. [38]pp. Folio. Modern backstrip over contemporary marbled boards, label and endpapers renewed. Corners worn, boards rubbed. Minor foxing and toning, some dampstaining. The second page of "The Moment is Sad" is lacking, otherwise complete. Good. A wonderful collection of early American sheet music, mostly American imprints, most printed on two pages. The printers of these early sheets include some of the most notable names of the period, such as Hewitt, Graupner, Blake, and Paff. Dichter & Shapiro, in the Introduction to their EARLY AMERICAN SHEET MUSIC, include these four publishers in a list of names they deem "eminently worth while." The highlights of the songs within the book are as follows: 1) Fortune, Michael: "Jefferson & Liberty. A New Song. To the Air of Jefferson's March." Philadelphia. 1801. First edition. The most notable music sheet in this collection. Fortune, an Irish immigrant, wrote the song to commemorate Jefferson's election and sent… Read More

Description:
Edinburgh: Printed by Alexander Kincaid His Majesty's Printer, 1764–1776.. Five separately printed acts, pagination given below. Folio. Dbd. Numbering in ink to head of titlepage of first four of the five acts. Ink inscription cropped at head of A2 of the final act. Some soiling. Overall very good. A collection of hitherto unrecorded Edinburgh printings of five key Acts of Parliament passed in the lead-up to the American Revolution, all relating to either the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, or the Prohibitory Act. These are the only copies of these Edinburgh printings to appear in the market, and we find no record of them in the standard bibliographies, or in ESTC or OCLC. By the second half of the 18th century, the printing and promulgation of the Acts of Parliament had been regularized to a much greater extent than they had been a century before. The Acts almost always appeared first in London under the imprint of His Majesty's Printers. Though printed separately, each with its own title page, the… Read More

[N, 1900. 321 leaves of manuscript. Early 20th-century three quarter calf over cloth boards, spine gilt. Spine worn, hinges abraded, corners abraded. Institutional bookplate on front pastedown, early ownership (and authorship?) signature of "J.H. Alexander" on front free endpaper and leaf facing titlepage. Internally very clean, a few leaves on blue paper, a few leaves smaller than text block. Very good. A manuscript concordance and analytic index to The Book of Common Prayer, dedicated to the "General Convention of the Protestant Church in the United States, which is the Witness and Keeper of the Prayer book." The volume, entirely handwritten in a clear and small hand, includes a preface, table of abbreviations, and over 630 pages of entries covering letters "A" through "K." The spine is marked "VOL I" in gilt; unfortunately the second volume is not included here. Although unsigned in the text, "J.H. Alexander" is inscribed in pencil twice on the preliminary leaves

Portland, Me, 1869. 535pp. plus twenty-three maps (many folding). Original cloth, stamped in blind and gilt. Small tear at head of spine. Inner hinge cracked, but holding. Else sharp and clean. Very good. A mine of information on the earliest travels of discovery to the northeastern coast of America. Discusses voyages as far south as Florida. The appendix contains D'Avezac's work, ON THE VOYAGES OF THE CABOTS. After describing the physical features of the region, the author devotes a chapter to the pre-Columbian discoveries of the Northmen before proceeding to his main focus of British and European travels to the Northeast beginning with the Cabots. Illustrated with fine lithographic facsimiles (produced in Germany) of 16th-century manuscript maps of the northeastern coast of North America. Kohl wrote other important works on American travel and discovery, Indians, etc. This work forms the first volume 1 of DOCUMENTARY STORY OF THE STATE OF MAINE, published by the Maine Historical Society and edited… Read More

Philadelphia: Anthony Finley, [1826].. Fifteen numbered, handcolored folding maps printed on fourteen onionskin sheets (Florida and West Indies maps printed on same sheet) and tipped to stubs, plus Index leaf mounted on front pastedown and Population leaf mounted on rear pastedown. Original red morocco wallet-style binding, flap stamped in gilt, "Finley's American Atlas Sold by John Grigg" and his address. Binding rubbed and edgeworn, spine and flap ends neatly repaired. Several maps with neat, expert repairs along the folds, mending closed tears, a few short unrepaired splits at cross- folds. Minor foxing, some staining on the New York map. Very good. In a cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth clamshell case, spine gilt. The rare pocket issue of Finley's seminal atlas, without title-page, as issued, with maps dated 1825-26. Description:
Caracas, February 6, 1827.. [2]pp. plus integral blank. Folio. Old fold; slight separation at fold. Light creasing. Very good. In a half morocco box. In this apparently unique broadsheet, Simón Bolívar tenders his resignation as president of Gran Colombia to the Congress in Caracas, Venezuela. By 1827 internal conflicts and political pressures were threatening the stability of the Republic Bolívar had created, Gran Colombia (present-day Panama, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and parts of Peru). In an attempt to pacify dissenters and preserve the fragile federation, Bolívar addressed the Congress, offering to step aside and assuring the people that he had no plans to declare himself absolute ruler. In this address Bolívar points to the fact that Gran Colombia is in an advantageous position, recognized by the United States and with Great Britain threatening war with Spain. Despite a rosy outlook, he notes that suspicions that El Libertador will exert himself as a tyrannical dictator continue to… Read More

Nashville; Columbia, Tn.; Clarksville, Tn, 1832-1835; 1837-1841; 1843-1860; 1866-1877.. Forty imprints, various paginations. Stitched, as issued; many in original printed wrappers. The final ten imprints bound in 20th-century red buckram. Contemporary ownership inscriptions and scattered other annotations to several volumes. Occasional chips and a few closed tears. Overall, very good. An extensive and impressive run of journals reporting on the proceedings of the annual Episcopal Church conventions in Tennessee. The Episcopal Diocese of Tennessee was founded in 1829 at a Nashville meeting of three clergy, six laymen, and the Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina, John Ravenscroft, and the resulting organization immediately began to publish reports of their annual meetings. In the time span covered by this collection, this run lacks only two antebellum issues and those printed during the Civil War. [Paris, 1785. [42] photostatic leaves. Modern green morocco, gilt-stamped spine and borders, gilt inner dentelles. Entirely in facsimile. Leaves slightly curled. Very good. A positive photostat, evidently taken from the original (about 1940?), of an important treaty between the United States and Prussia. Negotiated by Jefferson and endorsed by both Franklin and Adams, the present treaty establishes the guidelines for international trade between the two countries and grants Prussia most favored nation trading status. This treaty was negotiated at a time when the United States was working feverishly to establish trade with European powers, recognizing that significant commercial relations were vital to the success of the new nation. Extremely rare, OCLC locates only one copy of this facsimile. OCLC 29688674. MALLOY, pp. 1477-86.

Description:
London: Printed for G. Kearsly, 1780. [4],78pp. Quarto. Modern paper covered boards, printed paper label. Closed tear in gutter of titlepage repaired on verso. Titlepage a bit foxed, else quite clean internally. Occasional contemporary manuscript notes identifying the subjects. Very good. In a half morocco and cloth folding case, spine gilt. "The Third Edition, with considerable additions." This popular satirical work went through eight editions in 1780. The work has a futuristic conceit, as if a generation in 1980 was looking back at British society of the second half of the eighteenth century (the note To the Reader refers to the year 1783 as if it were already long past). Among the subjects of the satire are notables of English politics, literature, and society. This copy has several instances of manuscript notes in a contemporary hand identifying the otherwise anonymous subjects of the satire. ESTC locates only eight copies of this edition. ESTC N16064
