Eichelberger's account book contains a list of expenses as well as income relating to the Eichelberger farm. Entries are organized chronologically and list the item received or service performed as well as the price paid for the item or service. Eichelberger listed prices in both dollars and pounds. Typical expenses include the hiring of farm hands, food (often dried pork), county taxes, and the digging of a well. Eichelberger records far more income than expenses. He sold a number of items including wheat, apples, beef, rye, and animal fat. Eichelberger provided board to a widow by the name of Miller. Perhaps the most interesting sources of Eichelberger's income are the animals he sold. Gilbert Streeter was an amateur historian, businessman, publisher of the Salem Observer. Title and two columns of text in German, with a central woodcut image of Adam and Eve, the Tree of Knowledge and the Serpent; all enclosed with a typographical border. Folded; with some paper repair to upper right corner and at the margin of the center fold; the entire broadside expertly backed with Japanese paper. 'Adam and Eve' broadsides were among the most popular of all Pennsylvania German broadsides. They were printed by many printers in numerous editions, but primarily in German. Walter Boyer attributed the popularity of 'Adam and Eve' broadsides to the quality of the graphic image, the broadsides wide distribution and its expression of Christian values." Later edition published as part of the American Past series by the Book of the Month.  One of the masteful biographies written by Harvard professor, Samuel Eliot Morison.  A standard work on the life of Columbus, written before the advent of critical studies of our Native Peoples.

Advertising sheet touting the benefits of a newly patented butter and cream churn, designed by Orsamus R. Flyer, and lately owned by Hall & Holmes of Brattleboro. A search of the U. S. Patent Offices records reveals Patent No. 9148, July 27, 1852, which includes a design and text description of the new churn, signed by Flyer. According to the advertising sheet issued by Hall & Holmes, the machine is not only simple in its structured and easy to use, but produces more butter per gallon of milk, but it is a clean machine that saves labor and has few technical problems. They offer local dairymen a purchase policy including a trial period in which the machine can be used and evaluated. First edition. Stowe's novel of Italy during the Renaissance was published a decade after her most important book Uncle Tom's Cabin which appeared in 1851. Set in Sorrento and Rome during the reign of the Borgia Pope Alexandre VI, Stowe writes of a pure and innocent Agnes, her devotion to Catholicism, and hope of become a nun. The novel juxtaposes the corrupt ecclesiasticism of Rome and the purity of refined Christianity, characterized by the prophet of Ferrara, Savonarola. Stowe's narrative includes numerous observations, taken while visiting both cities in 1859/60 and incorporates these contemporary details into the novel. First edition, also published under the title My Unknown Chum.  Charles Bullard Fairbanks was Boston born and breed and a devotee of historical religions.  He converted to Catholicism, studied to be ordained but withdrew before receiving his vows due to recurring ill health.  He died in December of 1859 in Paris and was buried in Montmarte Cemetery. Illustrated with two engraved title-pages by Francesco Villamena (1566-1624) in the monumental style with a large architectural border and the title written in ink. The coat-of-arms drawn in manuscript in the title-page are of the arms of the Borgia Family and the engraving of the title-page border is in an early, unrecorded state. Pen and ink initials in of Federico Cesi drawn in the lower boarder on the engraved plate. Full 18th century sheep binding, red leather label; spine and edges rubbed, but sound. Some browning to the paper stock, but no deterioration to the paper and not effecting the legibility of the text. Otherwise very good copy. First edition, rare.  The first part of Becchi's book opens with the transcription of 91 articles of law regulating the press, which were put into place in 1848 by Carlo Alberto of Savoy.  These laws represent the first time that regulations of the press were imposed across the Province of Savoy, which includes the Island of Sardinia.  Part two examines each of the 91 articles and contrasts them with the existing Sardinian statutes, some of which are at odds with the new regulations.  Detailed descriptions include laws concerning offenses against the King, offenses against the legislature, laws regulating periodicals, laws governing engraving, lithography, and illustrations of any kind, and laws regulating printing houses in general.  Becchi's work includes many interesting notes which attempt to clarify… Read More

The New York Society Library was founded in 1754, after receiving a gift of the library of the Rev. Millington of Newington, England. The first catalogue was prepared and published in 1813, listing about 13,000 books, with a supplement issued in 1825 including an additional 3,000 titles. This, the second catalogue, demonstrates the growth of the institution and the development of its library into a collection of 25,000 volumes by 1838. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings both as individual plates and in the text. Original decorated blue cloth, gilt design on front board and spine; a bit soiled but very good copy. First edition. Very good copy of Robinson's study of the culture of Alpine plants and their application to the country gardens of Great Britain. Included is a short history of the Alps and numerous illustrations depicting the topography and flora and fauna of the alpine region. Many of the varieties that Robinson lists are fully described with information about the care and propagation of alpine species. (279).

With faults a sound and not unattractive copy. Third edition, an excellent example of provincial printing west of the Allegheny Mountains and a relatively early Ohio imprint. The two titles in this volume were published as separate titles originally appearing in Philadelphia in 1793 and 1795; with the Baltimore edition of 1802, both titles appeared together for the first time. Snowden was also the author of a History of North and South America, Philadelphia, 1805, which was reprinted a number of times, the final edition appearing 1832. Sabin 85590. Folio.  330 x 210 mm., [13 x 8 ½ inches].  77 pp. of ruled paper  Bound in contemporary calf backed boards over marble paper; leather joints and edges worn, with loss of pieces of spine; embossed stamp and bookplate of W.H. Spalter & Co., Bookseller & Stationers, Keene, N. H. Scrapbook of late 19th century American popular music including manuscript lyrics (18 songs), pasted-in printed broadside song sheet (22 song), lyrics clipped from newspapers and laid-in (7 songs), and one manuscript lyric from torn from another ledger and laid-in. The scrapbook was formerly an account book for a "Saloon", with most of the leaves now pasted over with song sheets or erasure of accounting information overwritten by manuscript lyrics.  This might suggests that the songs may have been part of the entertainment offered to customers by the New Hampshire saloon keeper. Large 8vo.  240 x 170 mm., [9 1/4 x 6 1/2 inches].  xxix, [1], 329 pp.  Illustrated with one hundred illustrations throughout the text.  Bound in original red paper boards, white linen cloth spine, red cloth wrapper; tail of spine with some minor transfer of red from wrapper, wrapper a bit soiled, spine turned dark; frontispiece loose from text block. Tenth printing, originally published in 1888.  Lanciani's book was an immediate success and became one of Houghton and Mifflin's best selling travel books of the season.  His text is a combination of new scholarship, describing the archeological discovers in Rome and a serious travel guide for many of the ancient monuments of the city.  The illustrations include wood engravings, reproductions of art, heliotypes in black and white of city views, and maps.  It is printed on lightly coated paper and is a very substantial book.  With faults a good copy of a standard book.

(8 ½ x 6 inches). xl, 240 pp. Modern blue wrappers; some light foxing, title-page with light staining.        First edition.  A history of the printing press established by Lorenzo Torrentino, who printed in Florence from 1547 to 1565. It includes a long introduction that focuses on the history of printing in Florence and describes some of the editio princeps that came for the presses during the incunable period. It is followed by a bibliographical catalogue organized chronologically of the printed works of Torrentino. Each description is highlighted by a scholarly annotation that places the book in context and provides bibliographical details of the publication. In total, Moreni lists 243 titles printed between 1547 and 1563. The text is fully indexed.
