On Herbert House, Belgrave Square Stationery with embossed crown monogram, 'Sir, I enclose a note from my husbands Father [George Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke] according to your wish. Yours faithfully, M. E. Herbert.' 18 x 11 cm, bordered in black. Traces of paper from removal from album. Herbert (b. 1822-d.1911) was an English Roman Catholic writer, translator, philanthropist, and influential social figure. Friends of many noted Victorians, including Benjamin Disraeli and Florence Nightingale. She became a Roman Catholic convert in 1866, following the death of her husband. Following her reception into the Catholic Church, as part of a determined effort to ensure the Protestant succession of the Herberts, she was forbidden by Parliament to bring her children to Mass, and her children were taken as wards in Chancery and brought up in the Church of England. Archbishop of York presents compliments to the Sheriff with regrets he is unable to accept kind invitation to dine. Thomson was a fellow of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Societym and also wrote a very popular Outline of the Laws of Thought.

Bucks, England : Mayne Reid, 1858. Letter. Very good. Single page on folded leaf, dated May 18, 1858, sending regrets that he is unable to furnish Miss Greenwood with a story. The Little Pilgrim was a children's periodical running 1853-1868, edited by Greenwood. Reid was a favorite and noted juvenile adventure novelist, with Theodore "Teddy" Roosevelt and Conan Doyle among those who found inspiration from his series. Sara Lippincott used Grace Greenwood as a pseudonym. Her earliest writing was poetry and children's stories, publishing locally In 1844 at the age of 21, she was published in the New York Mirror and she would go on to receive significant critical attention and be published widely, while rising within the NYC literary circles. She was the first woman reporter on the New York times, joining the National Era, a weekly abolitionist newspaper, and copy editing the original, serialized version of Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Will you be so kind as to make it known as much as possible among the teachers in your neighborhood, so that they may have the opportunity of apply if they care to do so. There is not much time before June 1st. Truly yours, . Herbert was the daughter of Percy Egerton Herbert and Mary Caroline Louisa Thomas Herbert. She granted the style and precedence of the 'daughter of an Earl' by Royal Warrant 1891.
