Manchester, N.[ew] H.[ampshire. Novely Advertising Co., Printers. [ca. 1890s]. Decorated Enveloped. Letterpress with illustrations from lithography. General foxing; never postally used. A clever bit of advertising. A.W. Cushman creates an appealing and eye-catching illustrated envelope to earn more business. The envelope's design program is reminiscent of encaustic tiles, popular in the Victorian period. Turning the envelope ninety-degrees, a concise vignette shows Cushman's offerings: beds, bureaus, side tables, mirrors, chairs and a fainting couch.

A collection of ten handwritten and one typed letter and five autographed postcards from various nobility; all written to Sir Algernon Edward Aspinall, Secretary of the West India Committee. The correspondence, mostly written in 1928, regards British Honduras (now Belize) governor Major Sir John Burdon (1866-1933). All are brief acknowledgements of the receipt of his pamphlet, "Brief Sketch of British Honduras, Past, Present and Future." Viz., 1. TLS by Sir George Ranken Askwith (1861-1942) expressing pity that the colony is in need of infrastructure as well as the "...the restriction of insects, and possibly of infantile mortality..." and surmising that such improvements will not improve until exports increase from ."..this important, though small, colony." 2. [Maryland. Second World War] Stiff cardstock printed in two colors. 14 x 11 inches. Small tears, corner-tip loss and mild creases; light toning and small stains; very good. With bold lettering, this ephemeral and off-the-cuff broadside brings a little levity during the second World War. "Who is the Most Popular Soldier at Aberdeen?" it asks. The answer lies in the winner of a popularity contest. This lucky soldier would go round-trip to New York City for a night of big life and weekend amusement. Although not stated, this broadside's intended audience was likely for soldiers stationed at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Aberdeen, Maryland. Aberdeen was established just after America entered the First World War. Today it is the Army's oldest active proving ground. IB100

To which is added, an account of the origin, progress, and present condition of that institution. According to Howes R-515, this is the first edition in book form of Rush's account of Ludwick's life, the first appearance being within an 1801 periodical. Ludwick was a German-American, a patriot and the "Baker General" for George Washington's army. At Ludwick's death in 1801, $10,000 was bequeathed to what was originally known as the "Philadelphia Society for the Free Instruction of Indigent Boys." Jacksonville: James A. Holloman, (1901). 98 unnumbered pages + ads and two fold-out plates. Illustrated wrappers soiled; faint edge-chipping to title-page, else very good. The front wrapper for this copy has a drawing by F.G. Storey -a demonic figure setting the grid of the city alight with a torch. We locate a variant printing of this title with a plain printed front cover, but not ours. This is the recounting of the events of The Great Fire of 1901. Jacksonville's fire, the third-largest urban fire after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, destroyed nearly 150 city blocks. The text includes vivid descriptions of the horror, eyewitness accounts, information on the subsequent military rule in the city, and property loss estimates. A large fold-out plate shows a panoramic view of the burnt district and the ruins of the city building, St. James Hotel, armory, and two churches. Expertly, extensively conserved; edges trimmed; old stains; good. An exceedingly rare Boston-printed 1756 act of Parliament to significantly enlarge the number of British troops in North America. This act allowed British army recruitment officers to enlist and detain indentured servants for military service in the American colonies and the northern provinces. It was enacted, in part, after the British defeat at the Battle of the Monongahela in Pennsylvania during the French and Indian War. In 1836, the State of Pennsylvania charters their United States Bank shortly before the great financial panic of 1837. The entire Act is printed within, all Articles and Sections inclusive. Theophilus Fenn and Company were State printers to Pennsylvania, contracted to publish those laws to be printed in English. The German printing, when outputted, contracted otherwise. Apparently no physical copies located on OCLC. Not to be confused with Crabb & Barrett, viz., OCLC 80677876. 62557658, etc.

Presentation copy; inscribed and initialed by author Chief Justice Tilghman to his Pennsylvania Supreme Court colleague, Justice John Bannister Gibson (1780-1853), who succeeded Tilghman as Chief Justice. Wide ranging address on agriculture, soil improvement, canals and roads, and public education by Chief Justice William Tilghman (1756-1827) who served on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court until 1827. Tilghman was then one of the vice presidents of the Philadelphia Society for Promoting Agriculture. Rare address delivered in Frederick, Maryland at St. John's College, a Catholic Jesuit school, before its debating society. St. John's is one of America's oldest institutions of advanced learning. The subject of Sappington's address is "Our Country and its early Settlement." Near Fine condition; untrimmed and unopened. "Resolutions adopted by the Democratic State Central Convention, held at Worcester, September 18th, 1850..." The resolutions concerned the statesman George S. Boutwell to be put forth by the party as a candidate for governorship; the admission of new slave states into the Union; the Party's congratulations to the state of California for being newly-admitted into the Union and so forth. Speech in praise of the art of oratory delivered at the Philological Institute in Pittsburgh by attorney William B. McClure (1807-1861). McClure read for the law in Pittsburgh and was admitted to the bar in 1829. He became the first judge elected in Allegheny County. The Philological Institute met for a time on the campus of the Western University of Pennsylvania (now the University of Pittsburgh). The Institute was the rival of the university's Tilghman Literary Society. "The University's buildings, along with most of its records and files, were destroyed in a widespread 1845 fire that wiped out 20 square blocks of the most valuable part of Pittsburgh." Speech by attorney and Western University of Pennsylvania alumnus, Samuel W. Black (1816-1862), to the school's Tilghman Literary Society. Black subsequently became a judge and was a soldier in the Mexican-American and U.S. Civil wars. Black served as the seventh governor of Nebraska Territory. The text has period annotations noting Black as "a wild young man himself" and to "Dr. Robt. Bruce," the first chancellor (president) of the Western University of Pennsylvania, now known as the University of Pittsburgh ("Pitt"). "The University's buildings, along with most of its records and files, were destroyed in a widespread 1845 fire that wiped out 20 square blocks of the most valuable part of Pittsburgh." Harris (1806-1860)-the "Father of American Dental Science"-to the American Society of Dental Surgeons. Founded in 1840, the ASDS was the first national dental organization in the United States.  Chapin was its president in 1844. Chapin authored the standard 19th century dental text, Principles and Practice of Dental Surgery. He was the second president of the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the oldest continuously-active dental school in America and he second oldest in America.
