Description:
Hollywood, California: Metro Goldwyn Mayer, 1943. Gelatin silver print of the very young actor Roddy McDowell and the famous Collie Lassie in their roles in the film "Lassie Come Home.". This is an original movie still with the MGM stamp on the verso requesting credit for Clarence S. Bull and a publicity blurb headlined "A BOY AND HIS DOG." There also is a stamp on the verso of the New York City photo agency The Silver Screen. Clarence Bull (1896-1979) was the head of MGM's photography stills department for almost 4 decades. The legendary portrait photographer probably is best known as THE photograper of Greta Garbo, but hie was trusted as the primary photographer for most of MGM's stars. His works are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, The National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, The Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, and the National Portrait… Read More

Description:
New York: New York Times, 1968. Lewis Steel was a lawyer for the NAACP when he wrote this article for The New York Times Magazine in 1968. In the article he challenged the traditional view of the Supreme Court as a liberationist institution, arguing that it "was a white court which would protect the interests of white America in the maintenance of stable institutions. In essence, the Court considered the potential damage to white Americans resulting from the diminution of privilege as more critical than continued damage to the underprivileged." The article was seen as a shot across the bow of both the Court and the NAACP, and the NAACP Board summarily fired Steel. In defense of Steel, the entire NCAAP General Counsel's Office resigned in protest. Steel's article recast the civil rights struggle as one of racial power rather than race relationships. It was arguably one of the most important of the seminal writings for the legal theory we now call Critical Race Theory. This… Read More

Description:
London: Fortescue Mann, 1896. David Simkin reports, "In a classified advert in an 1896 edition of The Photogram, Fortescue Mann was offering "Opaline Stereoscopic Slides", at 6d each, supplied from his shop at 48 Elgin Avenue, Paddington, London." Opaline stereoviews are albumen prints mounted on card stock and enclosed under a sheet of glass. Mann's opaline stereoscopic views were views of London, Seaside resorts, hop gardens, county life, river scenery, etc. Note: There is some debate over whether the London views by Fortescue Mann were taken by John Fortescue Mann (1848-1897) or by his son Reginald Fortescue Mann (1881-1916). David Simkin (Sussex Photo History) attributes them to the father while Douglas Heil (The Art of Stereography) attributes them to the son. Both acknowledge that the latter would have been quite a prodigy to have created these fine images at the age of 15 in 1896.. First Edition. Glass. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Fortescue Mann. 3 1/4" by 6 3/4". Photo.

Description:
Philadelphia: Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1844. Folio (18 3/8 inches by 14 1/2 inches) print from the third and final folio edition. The print is in excellent condition, with vivid coloring and none of the foxing frequently seen (see the Smithsonian's copy, for example). There are some smudges in the margins--well away from the image; there is one very small chip out of the bottom right corner in the margin and one 1/2" closed tear on the bottom edge. It is appropriate that McKenney and Hall identified this leader as "The Orator" because the Winnebago called themselves "Hochungra," which translates as "People of the Big Voice." Oratory was highly valued by tribe members, and it was natural that they would send their best orator to speak for them in negotiations in Washington.. Third Edition. Paper. Collectible-Very Good. Illus. by Charles Bird King. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. Fine Art Print.

Description:
New York: Fritz Eichenberg, 1943. The first of 2 wood engravings of Abraham Lincoln that was created by Fritz Eichenberg. Signed in pencil by the artist for "Howie & Bobbie." I think this image is superior to the later one--it certainly is more scarce. In a 1968 letter from Lincolniana collector Frank J. Williams, Eichenberg is quoted: "I did my first Lincoln, the three quarters profile, in the middle of the second World War, to remind my friends of the great heart of Lincoln, who, in his Gettysburg address, exhorted his country to be magnanimous and bind up the wounds of a war of brother against brother.... Lincoln represents the best America has ever produced, a man of, for, and by the people in the truest sense--great and humble, with a sense of humor and deep compassion.... If you look closely, you will notice that I engraved two little crosses reflected in his sad eyes--he knew suffering.". SIGNED. First Edition. Single Sheet. Fine. Illus. by Fritz Eichenberg. Description:
Paris: Mourlot, 1965. Marc Chagall was a Russian-born Jew who become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Offered here is an original color lithograph from his portfolio "Bible Lithographs" published in Verve in 1956. The image was later pictured in the catalogue for the grand opening of the Marc Chagall National Museum in Nice in 1973. Not long before Henri Matisse's death in 1954, Pablo Picasso remarked, "When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is." This lithograph demonstrates the core truth in that judgment. Image/sheet size is 14 inches by 10 ¾ inches. In fine condition: clean, bright, and crisp. Mourlot 122.. Original. Single Sheet. Fine. Description:
New York: Gorham Foundry, 1898. In 1893 American sculptor George Bissell completed a 16 feet tall sculpture of Abraham Lincoln as the centerpiece for a Scottish American Soldier’s Monument in Old Calton Burial Ground, Edinburgh, Scotland. It remains the only memorial to the American Civil War outside the United States. Based on that statue, the bronze offered here is one of three desktop versions that Bissell created at New York's Gorham Foundry. All of them portray Lincoln standing with the Emancipation Proclamation in his hand. This bronze is 8 1/8" tall and is so finely crafted that you can read the words "Emancipation Proclamation" and "A. Lincoln" incised on the Proclamation that is only 1" by 1/2". "Gorham Foundry is engraved on top of the base, and Gorham catalog number Q438 is engraved on the side of the base. Based upon auction records and dealer catalogues, it appears the this is the most scarce of the 3 desktop sizes that were… Read More

Description:
Worcester, Massachusetts: Leonard Worcester, 1793. 346, 84 pages. David Brainerd was a missionary among Native Americans in Stockbridge, Massachusetts and near Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1746 he published the first portion of his diaries about his experiences. After Brainerd died of tuberculosis at Edwards' home in 1748, Edwards edited and published the remaining portions of the diaries. This Worcester edition reprinted both. The book was recently and sympathetically rebound in full dark brown morocco with a red title patch, new but not obtrusive endpapers, and appropriate blind tooling. The first and last few leaves are browned and tender along the edges; the remaining pages are lightly tanned but quite supple. There is a triangle of faint waterstaining in the margins of many pages. Much nicer than it sounds--a better than acceptable copy of two important pieces of Americana (Wright Howes E56 and B717).. Early Printing. Hardcover. London: William S. Orr & Co., 1848. This is not a complete book--it is a single sheet containing an original antique hand-colored botanical print. Joseph Paxton was perhaps the most significant 19th century English botanist, the designer of the famed Crystal Palace, and the editor of Paxton's Magazine of Botany and Register of Flowering Plants. This print is from the 14th volume of that magazine, published in 1848. Drawn and lithographed by Samuel Holden, it is a superb brilliantly-colored example of the flowers in the magazine. The lithograph is accompanied by the original text pages explaining the origin, cultivation, and uses of the flower. The print is clean and bright, with a hint of toning of the background and the usual stab holes along the binding edge.. First Edition. Paper. Collectible-Fine. Illus. by Samuel Holden. 9" by 6 3/8". Description:
Williamsburg, Virginia: Printed by W. Rind, A. Purdie, and J. Dixon, 1769. (4), 577, (1) pages. First (and only) printing of this important colonial Williamsburg imprint. Late in 1767 the General Assembly authorized a third "revisal" of Virginia laws, which meant a compilation of all acts passed since the 1752 "revisal," together with all laws passed prior to 1752 that were still in effect. Ordinarily the contract for printing the book would have been awarded to the official public printer, William Rind, but Rind's financial straits caused the General Assembly to award the contract to Rind's financially stable competitors, the Williamsburg printing company of Alexander Purdie and John Dixon . Perhaps to spare Rind public embarrassment, it was decided to advertise the project as a joint venture; thus, the names of Rind, Purdie, and Dixon are listed as printers on the title page. ASSOCIATION COPY: On the title page is the 1784 signature of Alexander Breckinridge… Read More
