Description:
Black & white illus. throughout. Unpaginated. 4to, printed yellow wrappers. N.p.: 1984. A rare book published to accompany Guy Schraenen's May 1984 lectures and exhibitions in a series of Polish cities; WorldCat locates no example in North America. From the introduction: "From my 'view on Belgian Art' I deliberately excluded traditional painting and sculpture. Making this subjective choice I do not pretend it is no longer possible to paint on canvas or to make some bronze sculpture; it should be possible... "My interest went to artists exploring unknown fields, using unexpected materials and where the conception is fundamental for their creation and also that those artists are acquainted with an evolution out of the traditional commercial network." Near fine; minuscule stain to upper wrapper.

Naewon'am, "The Inner Courtyard Nunnery," Samgaksan: 1853. Folding engraved frontis. 15, [1], 328 pp. 8vo, cont. sprinkled calf, spine gilt. Dublin: S. Powell, 1771. First edition of this amalgamation of Young's Six Weeks Tour through the Southern Counties (1768) and Six Month' Tour through the North of England (1769). Baker (d. 1775) published several works suggested by Young under the auspices of the Dublin Society. "Arthur Young thought all these books very valuable...and would have been pleased to edit them for publication in England, where they were very scarce, if he could have found a bookseller prepared to guarantee him against loss, but he could not do so. His opinion was shared by the Royal Society, which elected Baker a Fellow in 1771, and by the Royal Society of Arts."-Fussell, II, p. 53. "Young was an honorary member of the Dublin Society and probably attended some of its meetings. He praised the Society for many of its activities but felt that it spent too much of its generous parliamentary appropriations upon… Read More

"Second edition" (but see below) of this translation of Commerell's work on the mangel wurzel, an uncommon beet developed in the 18th century as a fodder crop for livestock and, when harvested young, an excellent source of nutrition for humans. Commerell (d. 1799), chaplain to the Princess of Lowenstein in the German Lorraine and a member of the Société d'Agriculture de Paris, was interested in husbandry and wrote a monograph in French on the mangel wurzel. Lettsom (1744-1815), physician, philanthropist, and champion of improving projects, was much involved in the introduction of the mangel wurzel in Britain.
