Description:
Boston: Printed and sold by D. Henchman, 1749 First edition of this prime Americana classic, Brainerd had remarkable success with numerous Indian tribes, and left us a diary account that is unequalled. Pp. [2], xii, [18, list of subscribers], 316, [2, ads]. Somewhat later half morocco and marbled boards. Contemporary owner's signature (John Fullerton) to top border of Preface. Upper outer hinges starting, text browned, spotted and stained, upper corner of title leaf repaired with some loss. A very good copy. This work presents a biography of the famed Indian missionary adapted from his own diary, by the renowned New England divine, Jonathan Edwards. Expelled from Yale for sympathizing with the Whitefield revival and for remarking that a college tutor had "no more grace than this chair," Brainerd was nevertheless successful as a missionary to various Indian tribes in the Massachusetts/New York border region and in New Jersey. He died at the age of twenty-nine in the home of Edwards, whose… Read More

Philadelphia: H. C. Carey and I. Lea, 1823 First edition. 2 volumes. Pp. [4], 5, [3], 503 + [6], 442, xcviii. Lacking atlas volume (which is often the case). Later three-quarter leather, marbled boards, scattered light foxing, minor age-toning, contemporary owner's name. A very good, attractive set. This notable government expedition (commanded by Major Stephen H. Long) supplemented earlier discoveries of Pike and Lewis and Clark…" (Howes). Long was appointed by the government to explore the Yellowstone, but attempts to ascend the Missouri in a steamboat built for that purpose were unsuccessful. The expedition continued overland and finally crossed the plains through present-day Kansas and Colorado to the foot of the Front Range. The expedition failed to attain either of its objectives, reaching the headwaters of the Yellowstone and determining the sources of the Red River, but did add greatly to the geographical knowledge. This set contains the appendix, entitled Astronomical and… Read More

Chicago: Black Cat Press, 1937 First edition. One of 250 copies printed and published by the Black Cat Press. 61pp. Chapter notes. Original silver-stamped blue cloth, printed paper label on front cover. A very fine copy. Collier (1789-1873) was appointed by President Taylor as Collector of the port of San Francisco just after the Mexican War. He and his party were among the 1849 westward-bound emigrants who came into the gold fields via the southern route - across the Colorado River westward over the Colorado Desert. H.M.T. Powell, in his diary, indicates that Collier followed the mountain route out from the Carrizo Corridor, his trail leading up through a canyon, over the mountains, finally bringing him to San Diego. Well researched with extensive chapter notes. Quite scarce. [Edwards: p. 87; Rader: 1430; Rocq: 9400]. .
