On March 25, 1616, just a few weeks before his death on April 25th, 1616, Shakespeare's lawyer Francis Collins attended upon him to receive instructions for certain changes to the poet's will, the first draft of which had been drawn up the previous January. Shakespeare's daughter, Judith, had subsequently married and her father wished to alter the provision he had made for her. A new first page was drafted, and there were numerous substitutions and additions in the second and third pages, but a fair copy was never produced, perhaps because Shakespeare's death was imminent. William McKinley (1843-1901) served as the 25th President of the United States from March 4, 1897 until his assassination in September 1901, six months into his second term. McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish-American War, raised protective tariffs to promote American industry, and maintained the nation on the gold standard in a rejection of inflationary proposals. He was the last president to have served in the Civil War. Brandgee (1864-1924), the author of this encomium, was a Congressman and Senator from the state of Connecticut. The pamphlet presents a history of McKinley's life and accomplishments. It has recently been reproduced as one of those abominable print upon request concoctions: this, however, is the original 1904 publication and although it shows minor wear and soiling to the covers, is otherwise in very good condition.
