ELEGANT MANUSCRIPT CONTAINING TWO WORKS OF SPIRITUAL AND MORAL EDIFICATION IN FRENCH TRANSLATION. Illuminated manuscript on parchment, in French, France, after 1482, c. 1490. Dimensions 274 x 175 mm. 70 folios, written in a Gothic bâtarde bookhand, 18 large initials parti-colored in red and/or blue, inserted leaf in first quire with FULL-PAGE HERALDIC COMPOSITION IN GOLD, SILVER, RED, BLUE AND BLACK. BINDING: Bound in modern nineteenth-century blue velvet over wooden boards, pink paper pastedowns and endleaves, edges gilt. TEXT: Manuscript contains two works that reflect the spirituality of fifteenth-century Carthusians and their quest for the contemplative life. The first text, Sept fruits de la tribulation, is known in only five extant manuscript and is still unedited. RARE THIRTEENTH-CENTURY OLD FRENCH TRANSLATION OF A MAJOR MEDIEVAL COLLECTION OF CANON (CHURCH) LAW. In French, decorated manuscript on parchment, Northern France (possibly Paris), c. 1250-1275. Dimensions 315 x 225 mm., 72 folios, missing a quire after quire six, and lacking eight additional leaves internally, written in a fairly quick upright gothic bookhand in two columns, 1-line red or blue initials, 3-line alternately red and blue initials, 8-line parted red and blue initial. BINDING: Unbound (lacking front and back boards), a few inches of parchment (loosely attached), either the spine or spine lining, remain at the bottom of the spine, sewn on four bands with head and tail bands. TEXT: The Decretals of Gregory IX, also known as the Liber Extra (The book outside Gratian's Decretum), promulgated in 1234, was the first collection of canon law for the Catholic Church invested with papal authority. FIFTEENTH-CENTURY PORTABLE AUGUSTINIAN MISSAL USED BY FRANCISCAN NUNS. In Latin, decorated manuscript on parchment with musical notation, Northern Italy (Lombardy?), c. 1450-1470. Dimensions 158 x 115 mm., 271 folios, lacking f. 131 with the Crucifixion miniature, otherwise complete, written in gothic bookhand (Italian textualis) in single column, music in square notation on four-line red staves, 10 staves per page, rastrum 7 mm., 1- to 3-line initials alternating in red or blue throughout. BINDING: Modern quarter binding in tan-colored calf with marbled-paper sides. TEXT: Missals provide the text and instructions for celebrating the Mass. They are relatively rare survivals since they were often used until they fell apart. Our manuscript also includes over twenty pages of noted music for chanting the sung parts.
