Description:
Early Autograph Letter Signed, 8vo, on personalized address stationery, London, May 1, 1920. He writes the time of day that he writes the letter, "Four o'clock on Tuesday..." He then compares himself to Shakespeare. "I don't really think that I am better than Shakespeare; it is only that 'Shakespeare and Milne' would be even more deadly than pure Milne. but I am much too proud that you like any of the play to resent your finding fault with the rest of it, and I shall be very grateful for your advice...." He signs, "A. A. Milne." Paper clip rust stain on lower edge. Matted on blue board to match the blue of the printed address and laid on white board together with a photograph of his son and teddy bear. Milne writes this letter 3 months before his son, about whom he wrote his famed Winnie-the-Pooh stories, was born in August, 1920. In the same year, his first successful play, opened, "Mr. Pim Passes By," in January and ran for 246 performances in London. Autograph

To Armand Salacrou (1889-1989), the French playwright whose Night of Fury appeared on Broadway during the 50's. "The words 'thank you' are so tired, used in such a hypocritical way that they lost all flavor. I would like to find other words that would not have to go through the mouth, where everything gets twisted, but directly to the heart. For you, Armand Salacrou who are always at the crossroads, indicating the way to salvation to octogenarians whose shoulders are beginning to bend. My wishes, my thanks to all in this illustrious Society, a member of which I am proud to be." Signed large and angled, "Abel Gance." Autograph

Brown (1771-1810) has been recognized as, "the first professional man of letters in the United States." The first and second parts of this three part book, "were printed originally as a book in New York in 1798...the second parts..posthumously published in 1815...." as part of Brown's biography by William Dunlap. The 1970 edition offers, "a single volume containing the entire text of all parts of Alcuin...." The book promoted the rights of women when the topic was actively debated in the late eighteenth century with Mary Wollstonecraft's "Vindication of the Rights of Women" (1792) leading the way.
