Description:
London: Longmans, Green, and Co., 1888. viii,387pp. plus eighteen plates and color folding map. Original publisher's pictorial cloth, stamped in silver and black. Corners bumped, spine extremities and edges lightly worn. Moderate foxing. About very good. A humorous account of a trip through British Columbia undertaken by an English party whose self-proclaimed purpose was to assess the area's "capabilities as a home for some of the public-school and university young men who, in this overcrowded old England of ours, every year find themselves more 'de trop.'" The expedition spends most of its time travelling the Columbia and Moyie Rivers in southeastern British Columbia, before ending their journey at Sandpoint in Idaho Territory. LOWTHER 791. A touchingly sincere account of the author's transition into her new life in rural Canada. Traill's work is bound as issued with the second, expanded edition of Nicolay's OREGON TERRITORY..., in which he "describes in detail the early settlement of the Pacific Northwest and the rise and development of the fur trade. All volumes in original half calf, printed advertising boards, spine gilt, with cloth tab at head of spine for hanging. See detailed information below. Thirteen issues of the LEADVILLE CITY DIRECTORY spanning the turn of the 20th century. Thomas Corbett, W.C. Hoye, and John Ballenger published their first directory in 1880, noting that they were inspired to produce a directory "...to convince the most skeptical of the rapid growth and commercial importance of this wonderful city." The next year, Hoye left the partnership, and the subsequent seven issues were produced by Corbett and Ballenger. Corbett then left and Ballenger partnered with W.H. Richards to publish the directory for nearly thirty years, until Richards became the sole publisher in 1917. The directory ceased publication in 1918. Each directory is full of particulars on local businesses, including merchants, banks, lumber… Read More

Description:
New York: Currier & Ives, 1865. Color lithograph, approximately 17 x 22 3/4 inches. Light toning, extensive foxing. Good plus. A very rare Currier and Ives print after an image from George Catlin's famed NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO. Nathaniel Currier & James Ives, the most successful American print publishers of their era, published 24 of 25 of Catlin's images; all are now particularly rare. They began producing their own lithographs after Catlin's images around the end of Civil War. The image is redrawn, so evidently new lithographic stones were created, using one of the earlier editions as a base. The present lithograph reproduces Catlin's well-known "Ball-Play Dance" image of a Choctaw ritual. Gale records the existence of this plate, but does not locate any copies; OCLC locates one copy, in a bound set of the run of Currier and Ives' Catlin plates at Yale. GALE 0383

Description:
[20th-century, based on paintings and sketches ca.1850s].. Oil on panel, 15½ x 23 inches. Panel beginning to bend slightly, otherwise fine condition. In an American carved and gilded wood frame. An action-filled image of life near an American Army fort (inscribed "Fort Pierre" lower right) along the Missouri River, this fine oil painting of a large party of heavily armed and war-painted braves riding out of their camp is similar to the style of the important frontier painter, Carl Wimar, but also shows the stylistic influences of other notable artists of the American West such as Seth Eastman, Anton Schonborn, and Alfred Jacob Miller. The German-born Wimar based himself in St. Louis, which he used as a springboard for sketching trips through present-day Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana. "He translated these [sketches] into paintings that authentically and powerfully depict Indian life....His dramatic portrayals of the conflict between native Americans and pioneers helped to… Read More

Chicag: W.B. Conkey Compan, 1890. 248,[4]pp. Original printed pictorial wrappers. Front cover detached and heavily chipped. Spine and rear cover chipped. Titlepage detached, first few leaves chipped. Fair. A later printing of one of the rarest of outlaw narratives, first printed in Chicago in 1850. The author describes the doings of various murderers and thieves in Iowa and Illinois and along the Mississippi in the 1840s. Some of the culprits Bonney asserted to be Mormons, or at least sheltered by the Mormons at Nauvoo. He was involved in tracking down and bringing the malefactors to justice, and played an intimate part in the whole proceeding. This edition, printed by the W.B. Conkey Company, was a cheap pulp edition (often called a butcher-boy edition) intended for sale on trains and is by nature, ephemeral. ADAMS SIX-GUNS 112. FLAKE 590. HOWES B606.

Description:
New York: American Art Union, 1851 [i.e. 1853].. Engraved print, 11 x 12 inches; matted to 15 x 16 inches. Small crease at bottom edge, else fine. Engraving by Charles Burt, after William Sidney Mount's famous painting of New England horse trading. This work is typical of Mount's style, capturing a scene from everyday rural American life. Standing outside a rickety stable, two men whittle sticks as they negotiate the price of a saddled horse, standing near a fence behind and to their left. Charles Burt was a Scottish-born engraver who emigrated to New York City, where he gained both experience and renown. This is among his better-known works. Though the line beneath the title attributes the date as 1851, the very small print at the bottom notes a copyright date of 1853, after the American Art Union had been dissolved. A lovely copy of this iconic image.
