Written by a blind girl from Vermont. 158 pp, woodcut illustrations. Small hardcover. 6 x 4 inches. Embossed blue cloth with gilt lettering. VG with moderate wear and signs of age. Sound binding. Foxing/stains to the title and frontispiece, but text is generally clean throughout. Early pencil inscription on a blank page reads: "Composed by a Blind girl / and bought for Albert H. Lindley." The author was from West Berkshire in the Green Mountains and says in the preface that she was blind from age 11. Little more is known about her, but she was part of a genre of blind female authors who found success with a sympathetic public in the mid-19th century. Circa 1920 personal bookplate of Sonia Lustig (1867-1943), a Russian-born American bookplate collector. Lustig lived in Rhode Island, and her notable collection of 5,500+ bookplates is now housed at Brown University in Providence, RI. Lustig's pictorial bookplate features a child riding a mythological Pegasus, with a lush tree and Russian architecture in the background. The motto reads: "In Good and Truth is Our Strength." Signed in the plate with the interlocking monogram "CLD" [New England artist Chester L. Dodge, 1880-1950.] Approx. 2.75 x 3.75 inches. Mounted to a book page from 1922, with the single word "Kimono" printed at the bottom of the verso. Also included is the separate title page from Kimono, a novel by John Paris. Bookplate is VG with typical signs of age.

Not personalized but the recipient was James Bryant Conant, a former Harvard president who was ambassador to West Germany from 1955-1957 in the early Cold War era. Inscription roughly translates: To His Excellency the Ambassador of the United States in greeting on the occasion of the visit. Signed by Otto Benneman, then the mayor of Braunschweig, and Dr. Erich Walter Lotz, the city manager. Round ink stamp of Stadt Braunschweig. (Found in New England with other books from the personal library of James Bryant Conant, 1893-1978.)
