Charleville: Les Amis de Rimbaud, 1963     ¶ Only edition; including papers by Petitfils on "La fin d'une légende (Rimbaud négrier)" and Briet on "Deux sources du Bateau ivre et autres poèmes dans le sillage du Capitaine Cook et de Lamartine"; together with an unsigned account -- probably by Petitfils -- of Arthur Rimbaud vu par des peintres contemporains 1962. The last includes a charming and little-known anecdote of Picasso's portrait of Rimbaud 1960, undoubtedly closer to the truth than Fowlie's account 1993. The inset shows a group of women playing croquet on the lawn of the Sea Shore Cottage in Atlanticville (North Long Branch) nearby: This establishment had been opened three years earlier by Margaret Cook (Durbin) Harper (1830-1886), as "a Summer Resort for the young working women of New York, who are in need of rest and recreation, with but a limited time to spare and insufficient means to pay the charges at the usual resorts". All four variants of the gilt-morocco 'ticket' or bookplate of George E. Staehle, Grolier Club 1963-2008. The design is a view of his new house in Short Hills, blocked in gilt on (1) blue-, (2) green-, (3) maroon-, and (4) tan-morocco wafers 43 x 58 mm, as shown. Pristine, as new, unused.
Sets of this kind are vanishingly rare on the market. They are comparable, one might say, with 'plate-blocks' in philately, and much rarer than plate-blocks.
