Twenty-two pages have been filled in with handwritten notes on the child, James Davis Bennett, born August 27th, 1905. in addition to the handwritten entries, there are nine photographs, one postcard, and a pop- and die-cut greeting card. A little light soiling throughout and to pale blue and silver stamped gray boards, otherwise very good.

Title page in red and black with printer's vignette; decorative head- and tail-pieces, and ornamental initial caps. Text in Italian. ~ Third edition, improved. Franceso Redi (1626-1697) used the form of Ditirambo (dithyramb), a poetic meter of the ancient Greeks in the form of a song, here a paean praising the benefits of wine, particularly Tuscan wine. "Redi's poem is thought to have its beginning in a drinking session at the Academia della Crusca in 1666. The situational irony of this learned body in a state of inebriation is transferred to Redi's verse as the praises of solemn literati are sung by a drunken Bacchus. The poem is filled with references to classical as well as contemporary winemaking practices." (Catholic Encyclopedia). New York / Chicago: F. Tennyson Neely, 1896. Octavo (19.3 x 13 cm.), 141, [5] pages. Advertisements. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. An early example of a cookbook written solely for men outside of the culinary profession. An amusing mixture of recipe collection and narrative stories illustrating the fine life a gentleman can lead with only a chafing dish for cooking. Welch was a literary and theater critic and a regular contributor to Harper's Magazine. Top edge a bit darkened, and some light age-toning to text-block; in publisher's silver, gilt and red-stamped green cloth. Near fine. Presentation inscription on the front free endpaper, "To Mrs. W.B. Perkins, with the compliments of her friend, The Publisher, January 6th, 1896." [Bitting 490; Brown 2532; Cagle 803].

Ottawa: Central Experimental Farm/Department of Agriculture, 1905. Bulletin no. 51 from Canada's Central Experimental Farm. Octavo, 61 pages. Illustrated. FIRST EDITION. A short but thorough examination of many aspects of bacon pig production, including a section on wintering and varieties of grain used for wintering. Movable enclosures, similar to our 'pig tractor' of today are discussed as well. With some light edgewear to the printed wrappers, and a few internal pages quite soiled. Still a serviceable, and not unattractive copy of this scarce pork booklet.

Chicago: The Bakers' Helper Co, 1906. Octavo (19.5 x 12 cm.), 114 pages. Table of contents. FIRST EDITION. A small but thorough survey of breads and cakes in use in Europe and America, by a bread and pastry cook, and author of a number of professional baking books for Hotel Monthly Press. The author emphasizes a scientific approach, particularly with the use of the thermometer to accurately measure temperature, and relates how the varieties of grains in use in America, as a result of the varied backgrounds of Americas, makes for few universal recipes. Some light age-toning to text block; slightest edgewear to the publisher's black-titled green cloth, otherwise fine. Fairly scarce in the first edition. [OCLC locates fourteen copies; Brown 839 (for the 1918 edition only); not in Cagle].

Boston: Published by the Author, 1870. Octavo, 191 pages. With an engraved frontispiece portrait of the author. FIRST EDITION. A thorough little guide to baking of all sorts, written by a professional baker, who worked both coasts of Canada, San Francisco and the Sandwich Islands. The author differentiates the skills of bread baking from those of cake making and pastry, but endeavors to teach it all. With sections on jellies, crackers, ice-cream & water-ices, beyond cakes and bread. Some signs of kitchen use throughout, including light staining and a few marginalia. Number stamp to end blank. Previous owner's name and address on free front endpaper. Hinges starting, edges of brown cloth boards rubbed and a little chipped. The front board bears a handsome gilt-stamped emblem of two bakers, scales, a sheaf of wheat and a basket of round loaves. Less than very good, but a scarce baker's manual. Boston: Cbi Publishing Company, Inc, 1981. Octavo (23.5 x 16 cm.), xvi, 325 pages. Index. Fourth printing. The fifth book from Louis Szathmary, renowned chef, cookbook author, publisher, cookbook collector, and larger-than-life personality. This book documents Szathmary's cooking at his famous Chicago restaurant, The Bakery. The cuisine was a blend of traditional French with dishes from the chef's Hungarian heritage. Some foxing to edges of text block; in publisher's white cloth, with some light soil to edges. Inscribed and with a drawing by the author on the half-title to historical cooking educator Alice Ross.

[London: Elizabeth David Ltd. Kitchen Utensils, 1969. Booklet, stapled in wrappers (14.7 x 11.8 cm.), [2], 24 pages. FIRST SEPARATE EDITION; originally issued in Queen magazine on December 4, 1968. A small but authoritative pamphlet on English bread baking from Elizabeth David, (1913-1992), the author of the later English Bread and Yeast Cookery (1977). This is one in the series of eight little books by David, mostly issued from her shop in Pimlico, Elizabeth David Ltd., Kitchen Utensils. Fine, in printed, tan card stock wrappers, titles and with a design in black, and with none of the sticker adhesion marks normally found.

New York: Benj. R. Tucker; Blumenberg Press, 1899. Duodecimo (18.5 x 13.5 cm.), [8], 44 pages. Second American Edition. Preceded by the Brentano's edition (circa 1898) though often considered the first American edition. This edition was published in two states, the first in which the text appears on rectos only and some leaves are untrimmed; in the second the text is printed on rectos and versos: "Both editions, that printed on one side and that printed on both sides, are from the same type. It is therefore clear that they are not two independent editions, but the one-side issue constitutes merely a kind of de-luxe variety, while the two-sided is a cheaper, popular version of the same edition" (Horodisch, pages 76-77). This copy comports with the first state, with text printed one side only. A printer's binder's issue is extant, as at least one leaf is hinged at the top edge. A significant contribution to southern culinary literature. Most recipes attributed. Craig Claiborne said "In my travels around America I have found Bayou Cuisine to be one of the best and most outstanding of the regional cookbooks." In stiff, color printed boards with clear acetate over each panel; black plastic comb is titled in green. The scarce belly band with promotional blurbs is present. Previous owner's pencil inscription to front endpaper, otherwise near fine.

Alexandria, Virginia: Jean Berrard, 1987. Quarto in wrappers, [xiii], 146 pages. FIRST & ONLY EDITION. A cookbook and memoir by a chef who grew up in his family's hotel in the small town of Artemare Haute Savoie and followed in his father's footsteps when his father retired in 1955. The author describes life under Nazi occupation. Berrard's admirers included Simca Beck, Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas. Pen mark roughly inked out on title page; some pencil notes to title page. Pictorial tan stiff wrappers a bit faded at spine and with some edgewear. Near very good. Inscribed by Berrard and his wife on the verso of the front wrapper panel, and dated January 1992.

An artist's book from Alison Knowles, a founding member of the Fluxus artist group. A thorough presentation on the art of rearing bees, pigeons, rabbits and canaries, based on the author's experience, followed by the Appendix, set in a smaller typeface, with brief information on keeping the mockingbird, robin, indigo bird (blue linnet), the American yellow-bird (gold finch? ) and purple finch (linnet). Internally, hinges just starting; light foxing throughout. In publisher's blind-stamped, decorated cloth, gilt-titled on spine. Bit of wear to the extremities of the cloth. Scarce. Near very good. Illustrated with frontispiece, "The Aviary", and black & white illustrations in the text. Publisher's advertisements at rear. Both Harding and Richardson indicate that several issues of this "new edition" follows the stated second edition, and thus our date range. Later printings have various different paginations. "Rev. John Wood was a popular lecturer on many subjects and wrote many books on natural history" (Harding). Some wear to edges of a few leaves; foxing to endpapers and preliminaries. In black-titled and -decorated orange cloth, with publisher's advertisement on the rear board; cloth somewhat soiled and mottled but still legible. Good only.
