Description:
No Place Stated: The Viking Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1928. First Edition Thus; First Printing. Hardcover. All extremities lightly bumped and a bump to the edge of the spine. Spine slightly darkened. Slightly shaken. Lacks the dust jacket. ; Volpone; Or, the Fox, first presented in 1605, is Ben Jonson's dark satire of high society, abuse of privilege, and the greed of Volpone's parasitic acquaintances who desire his worldly fortune. This is Jonson's drama rewritten into a different version for the stage by Stefan Zweig, the Austrian novelist and playwright. Ruth Langer translated this version from the German. In this "cleaned up" adaptation some of the lust and lechery has been removed, the dwarf, hermaphrodite, and eunuch have been written out of the story, and a courtesan has been written in. The cover, pastedown, and endpaper pattern; frontispiece; and initial letter were all drawn by Aubrey Beardsley and previously appeared in The Bodley Head edition.… Read More

Description:
New York, NY: Metropolitan Museum of Art. Fine with no dust jacket. N.D.. Hardcover. This elegant blank book for drawing or writing is in a striking Art Deco binding. This replicates French artist and bookbinder Pierre Legrain's tooled and inlaid binding of Paul Valéry's 1925 L'ame et la danse, that original book residing in the collection of Metropolitan Museum of Art. The front and back covers are reverse images of each other and form a symmetric pattern when the fully-opened book is viewed from the back. This is one of Legrain's hundreds of unique, bespoke binding designs that revolutionized French bookbinding. 128 blank pages of cream white, "vellum-finished," acid-free paper. Bound in simulated leather, stamped five times to recreate Lagrain's design. Long unavailable and scarce, this blank book is in Fine, as-new condition, still in shrink wrap plastic from the printer, and would make an elegant gift. ; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 128 pages .

Description:
Indianapolis, IN: Indianapolis Museum of Art. Near Fine with no dust jacket. 1994. Stiff wraps. 3/8" scratch and price sticker to rear cover.; Brandt (Rembrandt) Steele (1870-1965) was an artistic polymath who applied his design talents in and around Indianapolis, IN. Returning from his late 19th Century studies in France and Germany, Steele brought the European Art Nouveau and Arts and Crafts aesthetics to his work in architecture, interior design, art glass windows, pottery, architectural terra cotta, cemetery monuments, frescos, metalwork, and furniture. Son of famed Hoosier Group painter T. C. (Theodore Clement) Steele, Brandt forged his own style in the decorative arts and did not follow the stylistic path of his father. With Notes on the text, an illustrated exhibition catalog, and Steel's life chronology. Color photographs of Steele's various works. Printed in Indianapolis, IN by Hilltop Press, which I can personally attest was not located on a hilltop. Bound in color… Read More

Description:
New York: Horace Liveright. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1930. Second Printing. Hardcover. Spine ends bumped, wear to tail spine end and corners, paper worn through at corners, overall light soil to paper covers. Lacks the dust jacket.; Fifteen poems of the "jazz" of living in Chicago and New York City, the poems intended to be accompanied by jazz music. This poetry illuminates the dark corners of society: of drunkenness, devil may care, music, trains, dance hall women, hobos, sex, thieves, grifters, race, crime, neighborhoods, noise, undereducated, low society everything. Not sophisticated in form, the poetry is in a mix of straightforward ABAB and AABB rhyming styles, and what spews from Bodenheim's mind gives the subject matter vivid imagery and stylistic punch. From the poem Bringing Jazz: "Last night I had an oboe dream -- / Whistlers in a box car madness bringing jazz. / Their faces stormed in a hobo gleam, / Blinding all the grinding wheels and singing jazz. /… Read More

Description:
New York, NY: William H. Wise. Fine. 1929. Reprint. Broadside. Some leaves have slight binding perforations at the left edge.; Twelve of Elbert Hubbard's mottos, or "epigrams," as he would sometimes call them. Each motto printed in an Arts and Crafts style: text within a graphic frame with decorative borders, some styled after similar borders by William Morris' Kelmscott Press. Most have decorative capitals, are printed in black and red text, and the Roycroft cross-and-orb device is below the text. The mottos are thus: 1. I wish to be simple, honest, frank - natural, clean in mind and body, unaffected - ready to say "I do not know," if so it be - to meet all men on an absolute equality - to face any obstacle and meet any difficulty unabashed and unafraid - to cultivate the hospitable mind and the receptive heart. 2. The Mintage Of Wisdom Is To Know That Rest Is Rust And That Real Life Is In Love, Laughter And Work. 3. If You Want Work Well Done, Select A Busy… Read More
