Sometimes credited with having coined the phrase "Make Love, Not War," Abolafia in 1968 ran for president against Richard Nixon on the nudist Love ticket, and by his own account received nearly two million votes. Contents here consist primarily of nude photographs and erotic fiction ("Long Time Comin" by Joe Kane, "The Vagina" by S. D., "Sexus" by Jim Boyd, etc.), with two pages of personal ads at rear. The text is permeated with typographical and factual errors (Sandoz, for instance, the Swiss pharmaceutical company for which Albert Hoffman was working when he discovered LSD, becomes "Sondiz"), as well as the expected dose of alarmist editorializing, and a chapter titled "Drug-Oriented Popular Songs," which contains transcriptions of lyrics by Jefferson Airplane and Donovan. The written contents--presumably all the work of Sassoon--vary from "excerpts" of pseudo-mystical and pseudo-mythological source materials, to loosely related stories and prose poems, with pronounced emphases on the profane, lascivious, and/or scatological. Profusely illustrated throughout with Gulyas's black-and-white line drawings, which articulate an absurd and psychedelic vision of reality very much in sync with Sassoon's. This 1975 Indiana Press version in full green cloth with gilt spine titles and green and yellow headbands was perhaps intended as a library issue, although this particular copy bears no library markings. Light dust soiling to top of textblock and a touch of shelfwear. Otherwise sharp, sturdy, and unmarked. A unique and well-bound copy.
