Description:
(Lyon): (Les editions J. Barbe, 1944. First Edition. Staplebound. Near fine. Tall quarto, unpaginated (12pp.), illustrated. A fresh, clean copy in the publisher's printed wraps. Housed in a tissue dust jacket, which appears to be contemporary, buthough we are unsure if it is original. There are neat clear tape mends applied to the inner flaps of the jacket to keep it securely on the book. A very near fine example, with a single marginal chip to one leaf, not approaching any text. A wonderfully stylized French alphabet book geared towards young children, with a number of anthropomorphized fish as the illustrations. Scarce in commerce, particularly in this condition. Produced during wartime and made from cheap materials, this is a beautifully preserved example. OCLC records just half a dozen physical holdings, mostly at major institutions, and the only on in France is at the BNF.

Description:
[Brockton, MA]: [no publisher given], 1890. Very good. One photograph, measuring about 13" x 10" (within a frame measuring 25" x 21"). Mounted on a typical period cardstock. Mount is generally dust-soiled, but still presentable, and the image is clean, with a few forgiveable scratches. The period framing, while attractive from the front, is a real patchwork from behind. We have not examined the photograph out of frame. Overall, a very good example. Pencil notation (possibly the photographer's) at bottom right, just below the image. Brockton, a factory town near Boston, was home to some of the earliest New England League baseball teams. It's hard to identify from this photograph, but this squad could either be the Brockton Shoemakers, the Brockton Bees, or the Brockton Tigers (or possibly a few other short-lived teams). The player/manager of the original 1885 Brockton team was Bill "Gunner Mcgunnigle, who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and… Read More

Description:
Cleveland: (Carl E. Semon), 1894. Very good. One photograph, measuring about 6.5" x 4.75", and mounted to a slightly larger mount. Print is somewhat dust-soiled, but the image is clean. Mount shows mild edgewear. A fantastic image of cyclists, all wearing very similar outfits including hats and what look like long socks. A large number of bicycles are included in the shot (a few gents pose with them), so we suppose this might have been a cycling club. The verso of the mount contains the following markings: "Carl E. Semon 147 N. Bolton Ave June 1894." Though the name is spelled differently, we think this is probably a young Carle E. Semon, a Cleveland photographer born in 1877, who has several works housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art. (Note that we have a second example, matching in all respects, though the image is a bit cleaner, and there is a significant corner chip to the mount, not affecting the photograph).

Description:
[no place given], 1970. Good. One contact sheet, measuring about 4" x 8", containing eleven reproductions of the same image, which each measure just shy of 1" x 1.5". Corner creasing to the sheet, especially at the bottom edge, and with an old staple hole to the top right; overall in good condition. The image is the well-known photograph of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X shaking hands and smiling - a snapshot of their only meeting, which happened by chance in Washington, DC in March of 1964, while the Southern Democrats were filibustering the Voting Rights Act. The words "Peace and Power," which do not appear in the original photograph, are superimposed here in each image. We were unable to locate a book, poster, or other publicized example of this exact image. A somewhat mysterious document, but whose meaning naturally self-explanatory, as the "peace" tactics of King and Malcolm X's emphasis on "power" are hotly debated by activists and historians to this day.

Description:
Chicago, 1955. Eight loose slips of paper, each measuring about 5" x 3". Each slip is dated in either July, August, or September, 1955, and is signed twice by blues legend Big Bill Broonzy, using various iterations of his name ["Wm. Broonzy," "Bill Broonzy," etc.]. Each of this is from a peformance that Broonzy gave at Chicago's College of Complexes, a sort of roving radical venue for free expression, art, and discussion founded in 1951 by Slim Brundage. The first signature is followed by a math equation, which lists Broonzy's payment for the performance, less a 2% withholding for Social Security. Below that, Broonzy signs his name again, then writes the payment received and the date received. All of the writing is clearly in Broonzy's hand. Big Bill Broonzy was a blues musician from rural Arkansas whose career vascillated between fame and obscutiry during his lifetime. Recording several albums for Meltone Records, Perfect Records, and other minor labels, he… Read More

Description:
New York: Scribner's, 1919. First Edition. Octavo, 156pp., illustrated by Carle Michele Boog. Two copies of the book; one in good condition, soiled and edgeworn, and one in very good or better condition, with the page block a tough shaken, but clean overall. Plus three original drawings (clarcoal on board), each measuring abotu 11" x 15", including margins, which are slightly more than one-inch in width. Corners have shallow chips, though two chips are quite large; none approach the drawing, and all are frame-able. One is already framed handsomely in black. The three drawings are final or very nearly final drafts by illustrator, Carle Michele Boog, a Swiss-American artist and illustrator who studied at the Art Students League and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. The book, rather uncommon in commerce, is held physically at about fifteen institutions, according to WorldCat. The book is a collection of stories about Native Americans and their relationship to various animals. Wuthored by a white man in the… Read More

Description:
New York: J. W. O'Bannon Company, 1920. Hardcover. Very good-. Oblong small quarto (about 10" x 8"). Yellow textured cloth, decorated in five colors, in a brass clasped binding. Covers evenly dust-soiled, about a dozen samples (of 34 total) with varying degrees of partial soiling/discoloration, and some young person has used a few of the samples (or their versos) to write some rather illegible diary notes. Sound. Overall, a little less than very good. A truly wonderful trade catalog/sample book for this New York-based book cloth manufacturer. Upon first glance, it's a little hard to tell just what is being sold here, as there is a dapper golfer on the cover. However, it's clear that the samples are for book cloth, and are simply inspired by the sport of golf and golf fashions of the period. The first 21 samples are all named "Golf ___," either followed by a color shade or by a number (i. e. "Golf 43" or "Golf Ruby"). The final thirteen samples are all in the same shade of green, and differ in their… Read More

[no place, but Cleveland, OH], 1959. Staplebound. Very good. Octavo, 4pp. Side-stapled with decorative ribbon added. Mimeographed cover and contents. Very good, with some creasing to covers. There is pen and pencil writing internally, and with the numerous corrections to dates and times, we presume that this program was used to draft the program for the coming season; that is, the corrections to dates, times, sponsors, and the league officers are indicated so that the new season's program will be updated. We could find no information about the "Queen Pin League," but it clearly seems to have been an all-women bowling league in the Cleveland area (with all Cleveland city businesses as sponsors). A light pencil drawing on the rear cover might be a mock-up for a new cover design. Highly ephemeral piece of Cleveland women's bowling history.

About very good in the publisher's printed stapled wraps. 1-inch tear at the top of the spine, but still a sturdy, sound smoker's copy, with a hint of dust-soiling to the wraps. Scarce image-driven program guide to the details and promises of the brand-new Main Avenue bridge; until quite recently the biggest bridge in Ohio. OCLC records just three holdings for the program (Cleveland Public, Cleveland State, WRHS). A scarce volume of local history, of interest to bridge enthusiasts worldwide.

Description:
1946. Very good. 3 handwritten letters, 57 typewritten letters (some with handwritten letters on the reverse side), and several other documents and a few photographs relating to the service and personal life of Vittorio Guaraldi, an Italian-born diplomat who served in Addis Ababa from sometime in the late 1930s through the end of the Second World War. The bulk of the letters are bound by a metal clasp, which could be removed without much difficulty. Overall in very good condition, with chips and small tears to the edges of some letters, not affecting legibility. A touch of foxing here and there. Several of the letters are in Italian, but most are in English. Most letters date from the last weeks of 1945, and continue through the summer of 1946, and go into serious detail about the process that Guaraldi had to endure to get safe passage to the United States, where he wanted to move to be close to his brother Romeo and a woman who must be Romeo's wife, the perfectly-named Juliette. In very good condition, clean and bright, with two flattened folds (barely noticeable, and a one-inch tear to one fold at the margin; contents unaffected. Excellent engraving of the product, a planished steel coffee pot with wood handle. The engraving is a partial cutaway to reveal the interior workings of the product. We note no holdings of this broadside separately listed in OCLC, nor any company records therein which might help triangulate the date. Searches of the company name and address suggest an approximate date of 1880-1900, though it could be slightly earlier.

A crisp, clean copy, very good or better, with wear at the crown, a few spots to bottom edge, and an owner's stamp on the front free endpaper, otherwise clean. An account of the "Burr Conspiracy," a supposed aborted plan by Aaron Burr to establish an independent country in the southwestern United States territory (then unorganized), along with parts of Mexico. Blennerhassett, one of Burr's co-conspirators, was an Anglo-Irishman from Hampshire, who settled on the Ohio River near what is now Parkersburg, WV. His notoriety in southern Ohio explains the Chillicothe imprint. Howes S13, Sabin 74878. An appealing publisher's binding, to boot, with elaborate curving of the long spine title.

New York: American Securities Service, 1930. First Edition. Staplebound. Fine. Small quarto, [22]pp., illustrated. A fine copy in the publisher's blue stapled wraps. Faint scrunch at the crown, but a clean, lovely example. Very scarce guide to the stock market, published certainly within about two years of the 1929 crash (based on data included in the text, going to about mid-1930). Issued by the American Securities Service, which seems to have been a kind of brokerage firm or advisor for ordinary people to compete in the stock market. Well-illustrated with charts and graphs, and also some good images of hte New York skyline. Curiously, the booklet does not say much about the 1929 crash, possibly because its full effects were not yet experienced, but certainly also to convince the reader that the stock market was still a good place to park your money. Difficult to locate in OCLC - there is likely a copy held in a box of ephemera related to this compay at the Lawrence B RomaineTrade Catalog… Read More

A decent copy in an unfortunate dust jacket, though we feel compelled to add that most attractive jackets offered in the marketplace have significant restoration.
