Joseph John Gurney (1788-1847) was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) in England. During his visit to America in the late 1830s to preach against slavery, he objected to some Quakers who focused on inner light rather than the teachings of Jesus, and this led to a schism among American Quakers over that topic.
