Description:
London: G.T. Foulis, 1967. 176 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams. "A special handbook for owners and mechanics. Written with the private owner in mind, it is more intimate than a standard workshop manual and much easier to follow. Much of (the authors') helpful advice and many of the diagrams, specially drawn, are exclusive to this book; a glance at the list of contents indicates the detail in which the following are covered: general maintenance and rectification of common faults, overhauls to combat normal wear and tear, and modification of the power unit for improved road performance and for competition." Appendices: 1100 Production Models; General Data; Torque Wrench Settings; General Dimensions; Routine Maintenance: Wiring Diagrams. Scattered tiny foxing marks on top of text block, slight tiny bump at top corner of boards. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear, light edge wrinkling, a few tiny tears - some with creases, a few tiny chips, light… Read More

Oxford: Osprey, 2002. 96 pp, 9 3/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs plus 15 pages of colour photographs, profiles, nose art. "From November 1942 through to May 1945, the backbone of the USAAF's medium bomber force was provided by the clutch of bomb groups equipped with the B-25 Mitchell. First seeing action in North Africa in the wake of Operation Torch, and in the Battle of El Alamein, the 'bombing twin' proved to be one of the most successful allied combat types in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations (MTO). Possessing a greater bomb-load, better range and higher top speed than the previous generation of British and American medium bombers that had struggled to defeat the axis powers in-theatre since 1940, the B-25 was to equip five USAAF bomb groups. From low-altitude ship strafing over the Mediterranean to high-altitude bombing runs on the Po River Valley, the B-25s in the MTO proved themselves to be a most successful brood of combat aircraft."… Read More

Description:
Oxford: Osprey, 2003. 96 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, technical drawings, colour profiles, nose art. "(C)hronicles the story of a majestic four-engined bomber of the propeller era flying perilous combat missions against a sleek, nimble aeroplane of the jet age, the Soviet MiG-15. A 'very heavy' bomber and a sky giant during World War 2 (at that time the B29 was the world's most advanced combat aircraft), it had been reclassified as a 'medium' bomber by the time North Korea attacked its sourthern neighbour in 1950. Many of its crew members had fought their war and settled down to raise families and begin careers - only to be recalled to fight another war on a distant Asian peninsula. An irreverent bunch, they painted their B-29s in elaborate colour schemes. Historians have long been intrigued by the unique war they fought, pitting their big and vulnerable bomber against a veritable fleet of MiG-15s. Crammed full of first-hand… Read More

Description:
London: Bison, 1988. 64 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H). "The B-29 was a larger and more devastating weapon than even its predecessor and namesake, the B-17 Flying Fortress. Developed during World War II by Boeing, this American superbomber could carry a much heavier load and fly over greater distances than any aircraft then in existence. This feature became particularly important during the Pacific War, when American aircraft had to fly well over a thousand miles and back to devastate the Home Islands of Japan. The apotheosis of the Superfortress came when it was chosen to carry the atomic bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. In later versions it was used by the Americans during the Korean War with great effect. The technical changes and use of this massive bomber is told brilliantly by John Pimlott of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Richly illustrated with colour and monochrome photographs as well as colour sideviews and a full colour cut away drawn by Mike Badrocke, this… Read More

Description:
New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2013. 383 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Paris, 1959" The City of Light is the center of the universe. Expats flock to exercise their loftiest ambitions and most libertine fantasies, and maybe dabble in a bit of Cold War spycraft along the way. Refugees from the East - a few babayagas among them - arrive to start their lives anew. The world's greatest city is as cosmopolitan and alive as it's ever been. Will is just another young American seeking his fortune in Paris - except that the ad agency that employs him is a front for the CIA. He's been in the city a few years now and is beginning to sense that his time is up - and he still hasn't figured out Parisian girls. Zoya is a beautiful young woman wandering 'les boulevards', sad-eyed, coming off a bad breakup. In fact, she impaled her ex on a spike. Zoya, it turns out, has been a beautiful young woman for hundreds of years; she and her far more traditionally witchy… Read More

Description:
N.P.: Wrens Park, n.p., 1999, reprint., 1999. 156 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). B&w photographs. "Douglas Bader, the indomitable legless air ace, became a legend in his own lifetime, and is today remembered as one of the greatest combatants to emerge during World War II. But less is known about the Bader Wing and its crucial contribution to the Battle of Britain. For the first time, this book reveals the fascinating story of the charismatic Wing Commander and the five squadrons which he led: the Bader Wing, consisting of some sixty pilots in all. The book highlights the dramatic aerial action of the Canadian aces in Baders's own 242 Squadron - Stan Turner, Willis McKnight and G E Ball. It describes in absorbing detail their many successes, and also the inevitable moments of disaster and death. Moreover, the story is set against the broader canvas and controversy of the Big Wing. The tactics and strategy favouring the Wing are forcibly argued by the author, who comes down heavily on the side of… Read More

Description:
London: Hutchinson, 1982. 366 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "(T)he first novel in the (Blackwood) series, opens in August 1850, when Captain Philip Blackwood rejoins his ship, HMS Audacious. It is peacetime and although sometimes engaged in small overseas campaigns the world's mightiest navy has settled into a routine of tradition and ceremonial. With the coming of the steam age many younger officers are pressing for change and modernisation whereas their superiors for the most part see coal-fired ships as a challenge to their own power. Blackwood soon discovers that he is about to get all the action he needs as the squadron's new admiral receives orders to sail to West Africa and stamp out the remaining strongholds of slavery. Blackwood is also made to realize that there is more to leading his men that holding a firm line in battle. Love, hate, ambition and envy are forces which he must also confront. 'Per Mare - Per Terram' is the Royal Marines' proud motto, and in the heat of… Read More

Description:
London: Headline, 1997. 128 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "Rarely has a new drama series engendered such genuine affection, particularly for its characters. Especially tantalising is the relationship between young English Catholic priest Peter Clifford and feisty bar owner Assumpta Fitzgerald, but 'BallyK' is home to a wide variety of colourful individuals including roguish businessman Brian Quigley, his headstrong daughter Niamh and her pensive husband Ambrose Egan, the local Garda. The show's other star is of course its setting - the stunning Vale of Avoca in County Wicklow - and Geoff Tibballs goes behind the scenes to discover the origins of the series, how the producers came to choose Avoca and what the real villagers think of the show. As well as containing exclusive interviews with cast and crew, this book is gloriously illustrated with on- and off-screen photographs capturing perfectly the magic of… Read More

Balustrol, New Jersey : Baltusrol Golf Club, 1995. 166 pp, 4to (12 1/4" H). Profusely illustrated with color and b&w photographs, reproductions. "The story of Baltusrol is more than a history of a golf club. It is an integral part of the larger story of the evolution of the greatest game of all. In 1895, during the infancy of golf in America, New York socialite Louis Keller and three other enthusiastic gentlemen founded the club. They didn't know much about golf, but Baltusrol quickly became one of the most celebrated clubs in the world. Then in 1901 the six-year old United States Golf Association (USGA) selected Baltusrol to host the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship. A remarkable tradition of hosting national championships had begun. In nine of ten decades of the 20th century, Baltusrol has been the site of at least one national championship." Howard Baker, London, (1981), Ist edition. 287 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photos. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition...Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift...But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting...This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played..." Description:
Oakville, Ontario: Mosaic, 1982. 287 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "At the outset of the 1914-18 War, no recruiting officer would look at any young man who was in less than the prime and peak of physical condition. Any volunteer who was less than the regulation five feet three inches in height got very short shrift. But the war was not very old before the official reaction to undersized volunteers had to change dramatically. Britain's Regular Army, the Expeditionary Force, was virtually wiped out in the first months of fighting. This book relates the history of the Bantam Battalions from beginning to bloody end - one might almost say 'out of nowhere, back into obscurity', for it is suprising how many official histories of the Great War have ignored the very real part these little men played." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - minor wear/wrinkling at the corners of the covers.. Not Signed. Soft Cover. Very Good.
