Description:
London: Constable and Company, 1921. First Edition. 8vo, publisher's original light olive cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, in the rare, original dustjacket printed in green. xci, 267 pp. A very fine copy in a near pristine dustjacket, a bit of light foxing to the top and foredge as is typical with the paper used. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. "Methuselah is said to be Shaw's only real engagement with science fiction. Shaw uses science fictioneering in Methuselah to add plausibility to scenarios and to keep readers entertained while he propounds his vision of the human destiny. His prime interest was not scientific, but political, as stated in the Preface where he discusses changes he considers essential before mankind can govern itself successfully. The final play, As Far as the Mind Can Reach, offers no solution to the problem: Humans evolve to the point of becoming free-ranging vortices of energy, able to wander, solitary, through the Universe, thus requiring no government at… Read More

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press , 1923. First edition. Under the auspices of the Royal Society and financed by Sir Peter Mackie, Roscoe returned to Central Africa and became the first to write about the customs and lore of the Bakitara tribe, making a vivid record of the culture before a demise caused by Western settlement and influence. Greater awareness of native cultures enabled the European powers ruling Africa to more thoroughly understand the peoples under their control and help institute more effective governments. Description:
New York: The Peter Pauper Press, c. 1940. First Edition Thus. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Hans Alexander Mueller. 8vo, decorated boards with overall patterned design in purple and green, lettered on the spine, and housed in the slipcase with paste down title label. 93 pp. A fine and well-preserved copy, with extremely minor overall age mellowing to the exterior. BEAUTIFULLY BOUND AND ILLUSTRATED WITH THE WONDERFUL ARTWORK OF HANS ALEXANDER MUELLER. Inspired by his experiences while in prison and written while in exile in France, THE BALLAD OF READING GAOL was Wilde's last artistic gasp. Because of his sobering position at the time, the poem is free from a great deal of the affectation that colored his earlier work. "Had [it] been written a hundred years ago, it would have been printed as a broadside and sold in the streets by the balladmongers; it is so common as that, and so great as that" (Jackson, The Eighteen-Nineties, p. 99). Description:
San Francisco: Aunt Lute Books, 1996. First Edition. Small 8vo, gray cloth over boards in the dustjacket. 106. Fine condition. “As an introduction to Alice Walker, this small book presents two of Walker’s most interesting stories, ‘Roselily’ and ‘Am I Blue,’ and the beginning of her prizewinning novel, ‘The Color Purple.’ “Further, the pages of Patricia Holt’s introduction and the appendices of letters to the editors and meeting transcripts exemplify ways in which these fictional works have been the center of volatile controversy. They have been the subject of removal from tests (as in the case of the recent literature-based assessment tests in California), from school libraries and from school curricula. These controversies, played out in communities across the United States, cut to the heart of issues of censorship and democratic process. “Along with her Pulitzer Prize and American Book Award, Alice Walker has the honor of being one of the most censored… Read More

Description:
Boston: Massachusetts Historical Society, 1897. FROM THE PERSONAL LIBRARY OF SAMUEL ELIOT MORISON, with his notes. 8vo , journal extract, bound with metal clips, plain paper cover calligraphed “Agnese/Atlasses/Winsor” in Morison’s hand. 372-386. Some expected edgewear; minor tears throughout, some repaired with tape. A transcription of an address on the work of Baptista Agnese, the sixteenth century’s most prolific cartographer and atlas-maker. “He is generally thought to have expended more care upon the appearance of his maps than upon securing correspondence in them to the latest views. These divergences are of course most apparent in the American parts of his atlases, as it was a period necessarily of constant change in the geographical conceptions of the New World.” [p. 372] This copy includes copious notes in Morison’s hand.

The jacket in very pleasing condition with only light mellowing to the spine panel. A FINE COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. Mailer’s second novel, dealing with the post-war era. “BARBARY SHORE is a courageous novel. Its theme is controversial and disturbing. It is written with uncompromising honesty and passionate conviction. It is our belief, as publishers, that it will be met by violent denunciation and enthusiastic approval. “ As the NAKED AND THE DEAD was the most important novel of World War II, so, we believe, BARBARY SHORE will be one of the most memorable of its aftermath.” -R.C.
