Description:
London: Punch, 1936. This original printed appearance of a Punch cartoon featuring Winston S. Churchill comes from the personal collection of Gary L. Stiles, author of Churchill in Punch (Unicorn Publishing Group, 2022). His book is the first ever effort to definitively catalog, describe, and contextualize all of the many Punch cartoons featuring Churchill. This cartoon titled "A BAND OF HOPE." appeared thus on p.631 of the 3 June 1936 issue of Punch. The artist is Bernard Partridge. The cartoon is captioned "(Left to right: Sir A. Ch----bn, Lord W---n, Sir R----t H---ne, Mr. W---n Ch---ll.) ' WE DREAMT THAT WE DWELT IN MARBLE HALLS...'" In 1936, Churchill was in the midst of his "wilderness years", a decade he spent out of power and out of favor, often at odds with both his own Conservative Party and prevailing public sentiment. This was one of the first positive Punch cartoon depictions of Churchill in quite some time. Here the four Conservative Leaders, Austen Chamberlain, Lord Winterton,… Read More

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1992. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition, first printing, inscribed and dated by the author. Ambrose inked his inscription in five lines on the recto of the page preceding the title page: For Greg | Best wishes | S E Ambrose | Appleton | 9/13/96. The only other previous ownership mark is a gift inscription inked in four lines on the front free endpaper recto: To Gregg | Happy Birthday 1992 | With love | Mother & Dad . We are fortunate to know the provenance of this copy, which we acquired from the original owners family, who purchased the book in 1992 and had it inscribed by Ambrose four years later. Condition is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The quarter purple cloth binding over tan paper-covered boards remains clean, bright, and tight. We note only tiny bumps to the upper corners, a hint of wrinkling to the spine ends, and a small, unobtrusive scratch to the lower left of the spine, corresponding to a small hole in the dust jacket.… Read More

Description:
London : British Ministry of Information in co-operation with the War Office and the Ministry of Home Security, 1941. First edition. Leaflet. If invasion comes, everyone - young or old, men and women - will be eager to play their part worthily." This original leaflet issued by the British Government early during the Second World War testifies to the very real peril faced by Britain during the first year of Winston S. ChurchillÂ’s wartime premiership. The warÂ’s outcome is now long-settled history, making it perhaps difficult to viscerally understand the credible, imminent threat of Nazi invasion at the time. Beating the INVADER was issued in May 1941, one year after Churchill became wartime Prime Minister (on 10 May 1940). The document is printed on both sides of a thin sheet of newsprint-quality paper, measuring approximately 11 inches by 8.25 inches (27.9 x 21 cm). Condition approaches very good, particularly considering the ephemeral nature of the publication and the inherent perishability of… Read More

Description:
Amsterdam: Adriaan Wor, en de Erve G. Onder de Linden, 1746. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Jan de Marre (1696-1763) was a commander of a Dutch East India Company ship. He first joined the company at the age of 13, and achieved the rank of commander in 1728. He retired from the Company in 1732, and moved on to a career of writing and of directing a theatre company, among other interests. This volume, in Dutch, remains in an intact original binding in good plus condition with near fine contents. The half leather binding features decorative gilt spine bands and leather corners over speckled paper boards with red-speckled page edges. The binding is sound and square with wear at the corners, abrasions to the rear board, and overall wear and some cracking to the spine. The contents are bright and surprisingly clean, with very mild toning and occasional light spotting confined to the page edges. There are two engraved title vignettes and one engraved portrait of the author. All in all an extremely nice copy… Read More

Description:
Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1969. Second, revised Canadian edition. Hardcover. In 1963, Frederick Woods published the first serious bibliography of the works of Winston Churchill. Woods' effort is said to have discovered numerous pieces not even remembered by Churchill or his family. Though now superseded by Ronald Cohen's excellent bibliography (2006), Woods' Bibliography is still an important reference source. This homely, well-used copy of the 1969 second and revised Canadian edition is notable for provenance. This copy is annotated by Dalton Newfield, whose address stickers are affixed to the front and rear pastedowns, accompanied by the sticker of a Sacramento, California bookseller (the City in which Newfield lived). Newfield's personal library notation code is penciled on the upper front free endpaper. Newfield was not only the worldÂ’s first Churchill-specialist bookseller, but was also the senior editor of the International Churchill SocietyÂ’s journal, Finest Hour. An… Read More

Description:
London: David Nutt, 1913. First edition. Hardcover. This is an elusive prize - the first edition, first printing, first binding state of Robert Frosts first published book, signed by the author. First published in England in 1913, the publication history of A Boys Will is complicated by the fact that the reported 1,000 first edition sheets saw two issues in four variant bindings. These many iterations were bound and sold over a period of three decades, owing in part to the bankruptcy of the original publisher (Nutt) and sale of remaining first edition sheets during the subsequent liquidation. It is estimated that no more than 350 copies and plausibly as few as 284 were issued thus, in the publishers original shiny bronzed brown pebbled cloth used to bind the first books that appeared. Known to Frost bibliographers and collectors as binding A, these copies were bound by the Leighton-Straker Bookbinding Co. before 1 April 1913. Rendering this copy of binding A even more compelling than scarcity warrants… Read More

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1915. First U.S. edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed, American first edition, first printing of the authorÂ’s first published book. This edition saw a first printing of 750 copies in April 1915, one month after the American edition of North of Boston (reversing the publication order of the British first editions). Condition is near fine in a very good dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square, tight, and beautifully clean, with deep color, and vivid gilt. Trivial shelf wear appears confined to the bottom edges. The contents are clean with no spotting. Age-toning is mild and the sole previous ownership mark is a neatly inked name on the front free endpaper. Second state of the first printing is confirmed by absence of the misspelling in the last line on page 14. The early state jacket features “75 Cents Net” on the spine and front face. Description:
Cairo: His Majesty's Stationery Office, 1919. Second English Edition. Hardcover. This is the record of the First World WarÂ’s Egyptian Expeditionary Force and their actions on the Near Eastern front. This copy belonged to the library of the British ArmyÂ’s Staff College, Camberley. The text contains unattributed accounts by T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), who found fame as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as "Lawrence of Arabia." This second English edition was issued swiftly following the first, but rather than the buff card binding of the first edition, which was published by "The Palestine News' in December 1918, this edition was slightly more durably bound, with an olive-gray linen spine over olive-gray paper-covered boards, and published by His Majesty's Stationery Office in 1919. Description:
New York: Vantage Press, 1988. First edition. Hardcover. Stanislaw ochowski (1908-1999), "a prominent Polish Officer" during the Second World War, relates his view of "how Eastern Europe was lost by the British into the hands of Stalin's empire." Much of the book is dedicated to Churchill's policies relating to Poland, with subsections including "Winston Churchill as Seen by the Poles" and "Churchill's Policy of Submission to Stalin". It is unsurprising to find a work by a Polish Second World War veteran critical of Churchill. Churchill's relationship with Poland had its controversies. On 5 July, 1943, the Liberator bomber carrying General W adys aw Eugeniusz Sikorski, the preeminent Polish figure of the Second World War and leader of the Polish government in exile, crashed immediately after taking off from Gibraltar. Sikorski's death fueled conspiracy theories, as the cause of Polish sovereignty, for which Sikorski advocated, was a thorn in the side of relations between the American, British,… Read More

London: British Official Photograph, Crown Copyright Reserved, published by The Daily Telegraph, December 1943. Photograph. This British Official wartime press photograph of Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill captures him receiving a gift from a British soldier during the Tehran Conference with Stalin and Roosevelt on 30 November 1943, Churchills 69th birthday. It is an intriguingly humanizing moment amid the globe-altering events that encompassed and eclipsed Churchills birthday. The gelatin silver print on heavy glossy photo paper measures 8.125 x 6 inches (20.64 x 15.24 cm). A fragment of the original, typed caption, affixed to the verso, hangs below the image, three partial lines remaining reading F HIS 69TH. Description:
London: Editorial and Publishing Offices of Pall Mall Magazine, 1901. First edition. Hardcover. This 10-page article by a very young Winston Churchill first appeared in the January 1901 issue of Pall Mall Magazine, Volume XXIII, No. 93, at pages 66-75. In the article, fresh from his own wartime experience in theatres ranging from the northwest Indian frontier to Soudan to South Africa, Churchill writes about the characteristics of British Army officers, the system that produced them, and suggestions for improving that system. The article is typically found in a bound Pall Mall Magazine volume containing issues from January to April 1901. Here is something different – a private binding of the article in blue cloth with a gilt-printed spine. Condition is near-fine. The cloth binding shows only a few trivial scuffs, and is otherwise bright, clean, and tight. The contents are immaculate. Reference: Cohen C217, Woods C23
