An attractive celebratory brochure for an overnight service steamship that carried passengers between New York City and Albany. The steamer C.W. His attempt to corner the market…

London: W. Smith, 1803. First Edition. Full Morocco. Very Good Minus. A hard-to-find classic on furniture. 8vo. vi, [10], 410 pp. plus 87 copper engraved plates, 27 of which are folding, of late Georgian and Regency Era designs by a master. Includes ten page list of subscribers. The definitions of terms ranges from short and to the point definitions to longer essays or encyclopedic articles. The writing is fluid and very readable, and the interest today is not merely as a hoary reference for words now fallen into disuse or whose meanings have shifted but also the numerous historical asides and lucid explanations of processes, etc. The writing is both precise and accessible. Occasional foxing. A few plates with repairs. Later full red morocco with edgewear.

Description:
Cloth. Good. N.d., circa 1910. 4to. 25.5 by 20 cm. 96 pages of bawdy songs, in French, illustrated with color pencil drawings, mostly of ladies and officers, generally humorous, bawdy or risque. Heightening their delight is how they are so deeply rooted in the time period of their creation -- in the dress and styles of the teens, in the feminine physiques idealized, in their conception of the mildly transgressive and naughty. The artwork, although depicting the fashionable and sophisticated, has the charming artlessness of folk art. This is not the product of a trained professional, clearly. Yet never can we not vividly visualize the scenes the artist has worked up. Roué was the headwaiter aboard the Cruiser Battleship La Gloire, and as such he was ideally situated to observe the kinds of people and their behavior that went into his artwork here. Condition: stitching loose in the binding. Some soiling of the boards. Cloth worn at corners. Leaves within with light soiling, minor dog…

Tokyo, 1969. First Edition. Stiff Folder. Near Fine. 39 by 29.5 cm folder, with 12 brightly colored monthly plates, 37 by 29 cm. Serizawa (1895-1984) was a much celebrated and decorated fabric and textile designer. In 1956 he was proclaimed by the Emperor "Holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property", a title known outside Japan as a "Human National Treasure" of Japan. And in 1976 he was appointed Member of the Order of Cultural Merit. He began issuing calendars, each different from the prior ones, in 1946, and continued to do them until his death. The artwork and appearance of the calendars is highly distinctive, with their dazzling colors, their brash, broad-brush typography, their bold, whimsical, folk art-inspired and often playful imagery arranged idiosyncratically. Serizawa was applying his artistic sensibility and technique from textile work onto paper, and the result is unlike virtually anything else one is likely to have ever viewed. Serizawa's…

Description:
London and New Yorki: Castell Brothers, Ltd. and Frederick A. Stokes Company, respectively, 1909. Wraps (Moderately stiff card, twine or ...cord). Very Good. Delightful romp through the year with the mischievous wooden doll. Illustrations are deliciously bright and fun. 12mo. 14.5 by 12 cm. Unpaginated, 14 leaves. 13 chromolithographic plates, including one double paged. There is one single paged plate for each month. Made to look like a manuscript, as the general style of the Ainslie series. Thus printed captions could be mistaken easily, in a quick glance, for handwritten pencil, and the text throughout is rendered in a cursive. The numbered dates definitely can trick the eye into perceiving them as hand written as well. Uncommon -- three institutional copies of this year's Catherine Susan calendar evidenced on OCLC First Search -- Bryn Mawr, Princeton, Toronto. Cover with somewhat heavy staining. Small lower corner chip, and tiny amount of surface loss by upper spine. Leaves within…

Printed in Germany. Leatherette. . Near Fine. Closed, 22.5 by 14 cm. Stretching to 15 panels in a concertina format. 34 illustrations on these 15 leaves, with the first illustration two-paneled. There are three other two paged panels, which five to seven different views each, but arranged with relation to one another, or a single perimeter framing unifying them in a sense, almost collage-like. This world's fair took place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, and the fair was promoted for its beginning during the winter, an option made viable by the mild climate characterizing the Bay area. As these sorts of fairs and expositions became ever more elaborate, the architecture of the buildings displayed a decided eclecticism, as was a characteristic of late nineteenth style more generally. So we see here a Moorish Restaurant designed in the "Moorish" style, a Chinese Building with quintessential Chinese features, and a whole lot of buildings in the ornate Beaux Arts splendor that was a…

N.d. circa 1920. 38 pages on a waxy linen-like paper with luminous color illustrations and 35 pages also on a lightweight regular paper with descriptions and prices of the illustrations. The waxy and lightweight leaves alternate, with numbered tabs attached to the waxy sheets. There are 16 such tabs, numbered up to 32. Catalog of what became the Avon Company. An exquisitely beautiful catalog with color that is seductive and somehow exuding a soft glow, a quality not unlike the radiance given to screen sirens via a dab of vaseline on the lens. The process of colorizing the photos has the dazzle of the best chromolithography from an earlier era than this catalog. On final page stamps of gold medal awarded company at Panama-Pacific Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco, which also aids in the dating of this…

New York: The Limited Editions Club; The George Macy Companies, Inc., 1946. Signed Limited Edition; First Edition Thus. Quarter Leather over Decorated Paper on Boards; with slipcase. Very Good Plus. Copy No. 5 of limited edition of 1,500; signed by Arthur Szyk. xx, 550, [2] pp. With color plate illustrations for each character and a double sided illustration for the entire group in the front, all done by Szyk in his highly original, ornate, appealingly lurid, Durer-esque manner. Clean and tight. With paper decoration of a Medieval-style diaper featuring a quattrofoil and cameo within. Some wear to leather, more pronounced at tips, and somewhat gouped up at lower rear gutter where a clumsy restoration might have been attempted. Still attractive overall. Some edgewear to the slipcase, which as a box retains functional integrity and remains handsome, with similar diaper pattern to boards but a bit darkened.

Description:
NA. Very Good. Very decorative New Year's Card with Doily-like Lace Work Perimeters Framing Various Images. N.d., mid-19th century. Three panels, with decoration on both sides. Each panel is 13 by 9 cm, and the triptych folds up neatly. Two of the chromolithographs are of pretty maidens and one is a bouquet. The woven cameo carries the brief message of "Happy New Year", surrounded by foliage decoration. The two other panels which form the front and back when the card is closed have maidens worked into the intricate lace work. Perhaps some rubbing to the lace maidens, and general wear to the fabric. The fabric cushion was probably once perfumed -- the essence is long gone. Otherwise, very well preserved.
