Description:
Washington, D.c.: Superintendent Of Documents Government Printing Off. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION of the first report on COBOL, the first computer programming language designed to run on all computers, regardless of make or model. With over a hundred pages of extremely rare related material. s computer use began to grow throughout the 1950's, there was rapidly developing a need for a programming language that was not computer-specific. As outlined in the introduction of this seminal report: "On May 28 and 29, 1959, a meeting was called in the Pentagon for the purpose of considering both the desireablility and the feasibility of establishing a common language for the programming of electronic computers in business-type data processing. Representatives from users, Government installations, computer manufacturers and other interested parties were present. There was almost unanimous agreement that the project was both desirable and feasible at this time. The concept of…

Lancaster PA and New York NY: American Institue of Physics, 1935. 1st Edition. Original wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the famous "EPR" paper, one of the most discussed and debated papers of modern physics. WITH: Bohr's response. "In the May 15, 1935 issue of Physical Review Albert Einstein co-authored a paper with his two postdoctoral research associates at the Institute for Advanced Study, Boris Podolsky and Nathan Rosen. The article was entitled 'Can Quantum Mechanical Description of Physical Reality Be Considered Complete?' [...] Generally referred to as EPR, this paper quickly became a centerpiece in debates over the interpretation of quantum theory, debates that continue today. Ranked by impact, EPR is among the top ten of all papers ever published in Physical Review journals." (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Indeed, like the verification of Einstein's earlier prediction of the gravitational deflection of light, EPR even got attention in the popular press. Eleven days before the…

Description:
Rome: Aldine Press/ Aldus [Paulum Manutium], 1564. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. EXTREMELY RARE 1564 FIRST PRINTING of the Canons and Decrees of the Council of Trent, one of the most important publications in the history of the Catholic Church; printed by Paulus Manutius and Aldus the Younger of the Aldine Press and the request of Pope Pius IV. The Council of Trent (1545-63), was "highly important for its sweeping decrees on self-reform and for its dogmatic definitions that clarified virtually every doctrine contested by the Protestants. Despite internal strife, external dangers, and two lengthy interruptions, the council played a vital role in revitalizing the Roman Catholic Church in many parts of Europe. Pius IV confirmed the council's decrees in 1564 and published a summary of its doctrinal statements; observance of disciplinary decrees was imposed under sanctions. In short order the catechism of Trent appeared, the missal and breviary were revised, and eventually a revised version of the…

Description:
London: John Murray, 1864. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS; PRECEDING THE APPEARANCE IN "PASSAGES FROM THE LIFE OF A PHILOSOPHER". "Lady Lovelace wrote that Babbage hated music. He tolerated its more exquisite forms, but abhorred it as practiced on the street. 'Those whose minds are entirely unoccupied,' he wrote with some seriousness in Observations of Street Nuisances in 1864, 'receive [street music] with satisfaction, as filling up the vacuum of time.' He calculated that 25% of his working power had been destroyed by street nuisances, many of them intentional. Letters to the Times and the eventual enforcement of 'Babbage's Act,' which would squelch street nuisances, made him the target of ridicule. "The public tormented him with an unending parade of fiddlers, Punch-and-Judys, stilt-walkers, fanatic psalmists, and tub-thumpers. Some neighbors hired musicians to play outside his windows. Others willfully annoyed him with…

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1954. First edition. original cloth, original dust jacket. Very Good/Very Good. FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND DATED BY WALLACE STEVENS on front free endpaper: "Wallace Stevens, Hartford, Nov. 6, 1954.". "It was not until 1954 that Stevens agreed to the publication of his collected poems, the idea being that the book's appearance should coincide with his seventy-fifth birthday which fell on 2 October of that year. Even then he was not particularly happy about the prospect... He knew, however, that there was now no alternative. The poems that made up The Rock section of the Collected Poems were not enough to constitute a whole new volume, and, in spite of what he must have recognized as the undimmed quality of these twenty-five poems, among which there is hardly a failure, he was aware that he was tiring." The classic collection of Stevens's poetry - including the new poems in the final section titled The Rock - was the culmination of his life's work. Issued in a limited…

New York: Henry G. Langley, 1844. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE (with only New York in imprint), complete with large folding map. One of the most valuable and comprehensive sources for understanding pioneer life in the Great Plains and Southwest. The large folding map is the first to display the Staked Plains of Texas. Hailed as a cartographic landmark, it includes the locations of forts, military roads, and trading posts. It also identifies the Oregon Trail and Native American settlements, and traces the routes of the earlier explorers Boone, Long, Pike, and Cooke. Convinced that a journey west was necessary to restore his health, Josiah Gregg, in 1831 set out from Missouri on the first of what was to become eight journeys across the prairies. An acute observer, Gregg took careful notes of the geography and geology of the Southwest, and the attitudes and culture of the people (including particularly valuable insights into the Indians of Texas and New Mexico). Description:
various: various, 1903. First editions. various. Very Good. A remarkably complete collection of works documenting the history of the theory of communication of information - what 'information' actually is, and what are the theoretical restrictions on the accurate transmission of information from source to receiver.. Note: The numbers in brackets correspond to the titles listed in the accompanying pdf, accessible via the link below the images. The first group of works details the development and proof of what is now called the 'Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem'. If an analog signal (e.g., voice or music) has to be converted to a digital signal, consisting of binary zeros and ones ('bits'), the theorem states that a sample of twice the highest signal frequency rate captures the signal perfectly thereby making it possible to reconstruct the original signal. This theorem laid the foundation for many advances in telecommunications. The first evidence for the sampling theorem was found experimentally by…

Description:
Philadelphia: Ferguson Bros. & Co, 1889. Signed Limited First Edition. Very Good. SIGNED FIRST EDTION OF THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION OF WHITMAN'S WORK; A REMARKABLE COPY FROM WHITMAN'S PERSONAL LIBRARY. On this Edition:
"Whitman never lost his passion for joining disparate parts into a whole: it was the basis of his politics, his philosophy, and his bookmaking. He wrote to one acquaintance in 1886 that 'I think of... bringing out a complete budget of all my writing in one book.'... Horace Traubel was again involved in getting this big book out, and he and Whitman had endless discussions about all aspects of its production."
Whitman was worried about his failing health and terrified that he would die before his "big book" was published. "At one point the poet told Traubel, 'I am in a hurry-in a hurry: I want to see the book in plates: then I can die satisfied. We will attend to the presswork and binding when we come to it. The main thing is the plates-the plates. Horace, I am on the verge of…

London: Harrison and Sons. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the first description of WIlson's famous cloud chamber, the first type of detector to show the tracks of elementary particles. Cloud chambers "developed from the work of Charles Wilson at the Cavendish Laboratory in the 1890's. He was interested in creating artificial mist, in order to investigate its effect on light, and did so by building a desktop-sized apparatus in which a glass chamber full of moist air was connected to a piston which could be suddenly moved outward, lowering the pressure and causing mist (or cloud) to form in the chamber. The mist droplets grow on tiny particles of dust in the air (cloud condensation nuclei). But, to his surprise, Wilson found that even when all the dust had been removed from the chamber, when the piston was rapidly moved out over a large distance a very thin mist still formed in the chamber. He surmised that the droplets were condensing around electrically charged particles…

Description:
Boston: Garrison and Knapp, 1832. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. VERY RARE FIRST PRINTINGS OF THE CONSTITUTION AND DECLARATION OF AMERICA'S FIRST SOCIETIES TO PROMOTE THE IMMEDIATE ABOLITION OF SLAVERY. By the first half of the nineteenth century, abolitionism in America was gaining traction in the nation's public conscious. As a movement, organised abolition groups were propelled in particular by Quaker and evangelical communities, who highlighted the fundamentally un-Christian nature of slavery. It is from these roots that the New England Anti-Slavery Society (NEASS), America's first immediatist society, emerged in 1832. Organising a national Anti-Slavery Convention the following year, the early forum for anti-slavery activists advocated in the strongest terms for the total abolition of slavery in all states. Adopting the term from British anti-slavery activists, NEASS and the Anti-Slavery Convention pushed for Immediatism, which "however variously it was interpreted by American…

Description:
San Francisco, 1966. First edition. Very Good. One-of-a-Kind Beatles Images Portend the End of an Era. This original contact sheet of rare 1966 images of The Beatles was discovered by artist, photographer, musician, and Beatles enthusiast Dave Seabury at a garage sale near San Francisco in the late 1980s. These photos, which we have on offer, were taken at the Fab Four's final concert at Candlestick Park on August 29, 1966. The story of how these images were discovered is almost as fascinating as the images themselves. Seabury frequented garage sales for years inquiring about Grateful Dead or Beatles photos and never had any luck. On one fateful day the seller said, "Yeah, there are some Beatles pictures in that box over there." (Marks) In the box Seabury found a contact sheet with 73 black-and-white images of The Beatles taken by someone who clearly had privileged access to the band. The photos were close-up and deeply moving, however there was no date on the photos and no photographer stamp.…
