Description:
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1936. 1st Edition. Full volume. FIRST EDITION OF VALTAT'S DESCRIPTION OF HIS PATENTED CALCULATING MACHINE FOUNDED ON THE CONVERSION OF DECIMAL INPUT INTO BINARY INPUT PRIOR TO CALCULATION. Valtat here notes "that binary digits could be represented either mechanically or electrically. He also stated that in an electric circuit the switch "on" would equal 1 and the switch "off" would equal 0" (Jeremy Norman, History of Science). As noted below, some instead credit Louis Couffignal who in 1936 and in this same volume, wrote of employing binary notation in a calculating machine. Couffignal "argues the utility of representing numbers by binary notation in computers and discusses the design of electrical calculators" (Aiken, Proposed Automatic Calculating Machines, 10). A Frenchman, Raymond Valtat (1898-1986) patented his calculator in 1932, but this 1936 paper is his first written account of his invention. In this paper, Valtat finally explains his thought and methodology,… Read More

Description:
London: Royal Society, 1964. 1st Edition. HANDSOME FIRST EDITION OF MICHAEL WOOLFSON'S CAPTURE THEORY, PROPOSING THAT THE SOLAR SYSTEM FORMED THROUGH THE CAPTURE OF MATERIAL FROM A DIFFUSE STAR THAT PASSED CLOSE TO THE SUN. "In 1964, a capture theory of the origin of the solar system was put forward by Woolfson. It was proposed that the Sun could have captured planetary material from a light, diffuse star by tidal forces during an encounter, and it was shown that for some set of parameters the captured material could take up a range of orbits around the Sun with perihelia comparable to those observed in the solar system... "The condensation of planets from the captured material was investigated according to the theory of the formation of condensations in a gaseous filament, as given by Jeans (1919), and it was shown that the ejected filament may have been sufficiently dense to have given rise to planets" (Dormand, The Capture Theory and Planetary Condensation, Monthly Notices of the Royal… Read More

Description:
London, 1925. 1st Edition. ORIGINAL WRAPPERS. FIRST EDITION of the issue of Nature including a centenary "Special Benzene Supplement" celebrating Faraday's 1825 discovery of benzene. Faraday's [discovery] of the compound benzene... became his greatest contribution in chemistry (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, 5, 531). "We are presenting a supplement containing the principal addresses which were delivered in the Royal Institution during the celebration of Faraday's discovery of benzene... The fame of Faraday rests almost entirely upon his striking contributions to scientific knowledge... His discoveries were more revolutionary, both in their effects on the development of theory and in their subsequent practical applications. In the latter connexion we refer more particularly to his discoveries of magneto-electric induction and of benzene. The electrical industries, together with the industries based upon benzene, constitute overwhelming proof—if proof be needed—of the value of research in… Read More

Description:
New York, 1924. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF "ONE OF THE FOUNDATIONS OF INFORMATION THEORY" (Claude Shannon, A Mathematical Theory of Communication, 1948). Beginning with this lengthy twenty-two page paper (see Origins of Cyberspace 163), Nyquist's nascent work ferreting out the necessary bandwidth requirements for the transmission of information was foundational and it was critical to and enabled Shannon's development of information theory. NOTE that we separately offer Nyquist's second paper, Certain Topics in Telegraph Transmission Theory as well. Nyquist's work studied the relationship between the speed of a telegraph system and the number of signal values employed by that system. His efforts established the principles by which continuous signals could be converted into digital signals and provided "the first statement of a logarithmic law for communication" (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Nyquist was "the first to express the amount of ‘intelligence' that could… Read More

Description:
Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1949. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF TIOMNO & WHEELER'S NOTABLE "SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF THE STRENGTHS OF THE THREE TYPES OF BETA DECAY AND [PROPOSAL] THAT A UNIVERSAL WEAK FORCE GOVERNED ALL THREE" (History of Physics: The Wenner Collection). Apart from Fermi's, this was the first hint of a theory of weak interaction. Jayme Tiomno (1920-2011) and John Archibald Wheeler's (1911-2008) paper "examined the relationship of the varied weak processes both with and without the mediation of the strong pion-nucleon interaction" (Marshak, Conceptual Foundations of Modern Particle Physics, 92). Tiomno and Wheeler here prove that "there exist other reactions in nature in addition to Beta decay that have the same coupling strength and similar characteristics and are merely two different manifestations of a general Fermi interaction" (Wheeler and Tiomno, 49). In 1896 Henri Becquerel discovered radioactive emissions; though not identified as such, this was the… Read More

Description:
New York: AAAS, 2009. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PAPER WRAPS of Almut Arneth et al reaching a preliminary conclusion that pollution control will accelerate, not mitigate, warming. ABSTRACT: ""The push toward cleaner air in Beijing before the 2008 Olympic Games was a vivid reminder of the need to control air pollution, not only in Asia but in many regions of the world (1). There is mounting evidence for particle- and ozone-related health effects (2, 3). Furthermore, ozone and aerosol particles affect Earth's radiation balance (4, 5): Many aerosols cool the atmosphere (a negative forcing), whereas ozone and black carbon aerosol have a warming effect (a positive forcing). There is thus a strong motivation for treating air pollution control and climate change in common policy frameworks (5, 6). However, recent model studies (7-9) have shown that changes in pollutant and precursor emissions, atmospheric burden, and radiative forcing are not necessarily proportional. Furthermore, as Shindell… Read More

New York: Institute of Radio Engineers, 1949. 1st Edition. TRUE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL PRINTED WRAPS OF CLAUDE SHANNON'S MATHEMATICAL PROOF & REFINEMENT OF NYQUIST'S SAMPLING THEOREM (now Nyquist-Shannon), "THE BACKBONE OF MODERN COMMUNICATIONS" (Gran, Numerical Computing, 136). Following this publication, the paper appeared in Bell Telephone's Technical Publications. Shannon's paper, a manuscript first written in 1940 but held from publication until after WWII ended, "set the foundation of information theory. [It] is a masterpiece both in terms of achievement and conciseness. It is undoubtedly one of the theoretical works that has had the greatest impact on modern electrical engineering" (Unser, Sampling, 1). Note that we offer the Nyquist paper separately. An American mathematician and engineer, Claude Shannon is most often connected to the sampling theorem which bears his name. "Shannon is considered the father of information theory, which laid the foundation for digital communications and… Read More

London: The Royal Society, 1868. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION EXTRACTS OF "THE FIRST COORDINATED STUDY OF EARTH CURRENTS & THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO MAGNETIC VARIATIONS" (Zhdanov, Foundations of Geophysical Electromagnetic Theory and Methods, xxxi). George Biddell Airy's paper includes (1801-1892) five two-color lithographic chart (full plates). 4to. Not ex-library; no stamps of any kind. The plates have moderate foxing; the paper is in fine condition. Airy was an English mathematician and astronomer as well as Lucasian professor at Cambridge and Astronomer Royal. Among "his many achievements include work on planetary orbits, measuring the mean density of the Earth, a method of solution of two-dimensional problems in solid mechanics and, in his role as Astronomer Royal, establishing Greenwich as the location of the prime meridian" (Wikipedia). Airy's discovery of a new inequality in the motions of Venus and the earth is in some respects his most remarkable achievement.

London: Macmillan, 1924. 1st Edition. Full volume. FIRST EDITION OF EDDINGTON'S PAPER PROPOSING A CHANGE IN COORDINATE SYSTEMS THAT WILL ELIMINATE THE SCHWARZSCHILD SINGULARITY. The physical significance of this singularity, and whether this singularity could ever occur in nature, was debated for many decades" until the possibility of a black hole was accepted in the second half of the 20th century (Wikipedia). In this paper, Eddington made a coordinate change which transformed the Schwarzchild metric into a form which was not singular, thereby rejecting Schwarzchild's implication of relativistic quantum mechanics rather than accept the possibility of black holes. Princeton: Association for Symbolic Logic, 1959. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION, FIRST IMPRESSION IN PRISTINE ORIGINAL WRAPS OF SAUL KRIPKE'S SEMINAL FIRST PAPER ON MODAL LOGIC, "A Completeness Theorem in Modal Logic". Included are all 4 Journal issues for 1959, one of which is inclusive of abstracts of 3 other papers Kripke sent to the Journal. "Universally hailed" for this work, in this paper, Kripke both proves the formal completeness of modal logic (supplemented by first-order quantifiers and the sign of equality) and "create[s] a semantics, now called Kripke semantics" (Hurley, Logic: The Essentials, 217). New York: American Association for the Advancement of Science, 2006. 1st Edition. FIRST EDITION of a work that contributed greatly to our understanding of our ‘inner GPS' -- "where we are, how we know the way from one place to another, and how we store this information in order to immediately find the way when we repeat a path" (Adaes, The Coordinates of a Nobel Prize, 2014). This work builds upon and contributes significantly to the 2005 work of Sargolini's co-authors who won the Nobel Prize (also in 2005) for their discovery of a key component the brain's positioning system - ‘grid cells.' "Grid cells are neurons that fire when a freely moving animal traverses a set of small regions (firing fields) which are roughly equal in size and arranged in a periodic triangular array that covers the entire available environment" (Wikipedia). Sargolini et al proved that "navigation requires representation of the animal's orientation relative to fixed landmarks in the external environment" Shepherd,… Read More

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1954. 1st Edition. RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the Yang and Mills quantum mechanical theory, introduced in this paper and underappreciated at that time. The Yang-Mills theory is now the foundation of most of elementary particle theory; it is the mathematical foundation underlying "three of the four fundamental forces of nature that physicists succeeded in unifying in the last half of the 20th century: electromagnetism, the 'weak force' responsible for radioactive decay, and the 'strong force' responsible for holding the nuclei of atoms together" (Gale, World of Mathematics Summary). Yang and Mills proposed a tensor equation that relies on a quantum mechanical property called the 'mass gap.' "The laws of quantum physics stand to the world of elementary particles in the way that Newton's laws of classical mechanics stand to the macroscopic world. Description:
Amsterdam: M. M. Rey, 1762. 1st Edition. 1762 FIRST EDITION IN TWO VOLUMES OF CHARLES BONNET'S IMPORTANT THEORY OF ‘PRE-FORMATION', THE BELIEF THAT FEMALE EGGS CONTAIN PREFORMED INDIVIDUALS. Bonnet was "one of the founders of modern biology" and his "theory of generation offered the best synthesis of 18th-century ideas of development and remained a leading authority until von Baer" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography, II, 286; Garrison-Morton 472). Description:
Washington DC: Smithsonian, 1915. 1st Edition. FIRST PRINTED EDITION OF AN EXTENSIVE SPEECH RUTHERFORD GAVE ON COSMIC EVOLUTION. Rutherford was invited to give the opening speech in the Hale Cosmic Evolution Series of Lectures of the National Academy of Sciences. The Hale series was intended to mark the progress made in a variety of fields toward understanding the origin and evolution of life; as a step toward defining "the problems of organic evolution in terms of modern mechanistic science... [and] it represents the first comprehensive effort in that direction" (The American Museum Journal, 1919, 193). Rutherford's lecture dealt with, as the title implies, The Constitution of Matter and the Evolution of the Elements . "Aided by many illustrations, including some of the experiments which brought to him the award of the Nobel prize, [Rutherford] explained how the discovery of radioactivity and the study of the electron have revolutionized our views on the nature of matter. By these new means of… Read More
