New York: E.P. Dutton, 1989. Uncorrected proof of the first edition of the author's first book, a well-received collection of stories. Octavo, original orange wrappers. Signed by Andre Dubus III on the title page. Review slip laid in. In fine condition. Passion and betrayal, violent desperation, ambivalent love that hinges on hatred, and the quest for acceptance by those who stand on the edge of society-these are the hard-hitting themes of a stunningly crafted first collection of stories by the bestselling author of House of Sand and Fog. A vigilant young man working in a halfway house finds himself unable to defend against the rage of one of the inmates in the title story. In "White Trees, Hammer Moon," a man soon to leave home for prison finds himself as unprepared for a family camping trip in the mountains of New Hampshire as he has been for most things in his life. And in the award-winning "Forky," an ex-con is haunted by the punishment he receives just as he is being released into the world.… Read More

New York: Doubleday, 1990-1992. Uncorrected proofs of author's most well known work; a trilogy originally published in Egypt in the 1950's and which garnered him the Nobel Prize in literature decades later in 1988. Octavo, 3 volumes, original illustrated wrappers. Each volume is signed by Mahfouz and in near fine condition. Translated by William M. Hutchins and Olive E. Kenny. Books signed by Mahfouz are rare as he left Egypt only twice during his life, each time only but for a short time. The Cairo Trilogy traces three generations of the family of patriarch Al-Sayyid Ahmad Abd al-Jawad, who rules his household with a strict hand while living a secret life of self-indulgence. The Trilogy is the achievement of a master storyteller reminiscent of Tolstoy. Laid into Palace Walk is the publicity from Doublday. "Naguib Mahfouz is not only a Hugo and a Dickens, but also a Galsworthy, a Mann, a Zola, and a Jules Romains" (Edward Said). Naguib Mahfouz's epic trilogy of colonial Egypt is the captivating story… Read More

Description:
Paris: Gauthier-Villars, 1912. Louis Bachelier was a French mathematician credited with being the first person to model the stochastic process now called Brownian motion, which was part of his PhD thesis The Theory of Speculation. His thesis, which discussed the use of Brownian motion to evaluate stock options, is historically the first paper to use advanced mathematics in the study of finance. Thus, Bachelier is considered a pioneer in the study of financial mathematics and stochastic processes. His systematic use of the concept of continuity in probabilistic modeling was, he felt, his major contribution to science. He defined Brownian motion predating Einstein by five years and discussed the use of Brownian motion to evaluate stock options. Historically, he was the first person to use advanced mathematics in the study of finance and is considered a pioneer in the study of financial mathematics.

Description:
Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 1962. First edition of this landmark work. Octavo, original cloth. Boldly inscribed by both James M. Buchanan and Gordon Tullock on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that has a few small closed tears. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed first edition. The Calculus Of Consent is one of the classic works from the discipline of public choice in economics and political science. The analytical approach of the authors is based on methodological individualism - collective action is composed of individual actions and on the rejection of any organic interpretation of the state. A purely individualistic conception of collectivity is maintained: the state is an artifact, created by men and thus subject to change and perfection. Buchanan and Tullock maintain that only constitutional changes, which can be shown to be in the interest of all interested parties can be judged as "improvements" and therefore consider conceptual unanimity as the only… Read More

Description:
New York: George P. Putnam, 1849. The California and Oregon Trail is the gripping account of Francis Parkman's journey west across North America in 1846. After crossing the Allegheny Mountains by coach and continuing by boat and wagon to Westport, Missouri, he set out with three companions on a horseback journey that would ultimately take him over two thousand miles. His detailed description of the journey, set against the vast majesty of the Great Plains, has emerged through the generations as a classic narrative of one man's exploration of the American Wilderness. "Francis Parkman, one of the giants of Nineteenth Century American historical writing..., began his literary career west of the Mississippi. A tour of the Great Plains in 1846 seems hardly a means to regaining health and vigor, but with this goal in mind young Parkman, in fragile health and in danger of losing his eyesight, set out. His daily notes became the material for his first book..." (Wagner-Camp). Second printing, done in early… Read More
