Description:
Richmond: Jefferson Fine Art Gallery, 1898. Albumen photograph measuring 5 ½ x 3 â…ž on larger mount. Very good to near fine with light wear. Very Good. James Conway Farley was the first African-American photographer to gain fame in the United States, exhibiting at the Colored Industrial Fair in Richmond in 1884, where he won a first prize and the World Cotton Centennial in New Orleans in 1885. Born to enslaved parents in 1854, he moved with his mother to Richmond in 1861 and eventually found work at the studio of G.W. Davis. By 1879 Farley was the director of the studio, and his work was exhibited widely. In 1895, Farley opened his own studio, the Jefferson Fine Art Gallery (also known as the Jefferson Art Gallery), on 523 East Broad St. in Richmond. He photographed prolifically during this period, his work appearing routinely in the Richmond Planet, where the one photograph of Farley himself that we know of appears, in a group shot of the directors of the Mechanics Savings Bank. Farley was…

Huron, 1891. Albumen photograph measuring 5 ½ x 4 inches on larger mount. Some fading, very good overall. A scarce and possibly image from the post-statehood Surveyor-General's office. Glenwood Springs, Colorado: Dennis, 1890. Albumen photograph, 7 ¼ x 4 ¾ inches on larger mount. Near Fine. An uncommon cabinet card lampooning the plight of the solitary miner through a series of drawings. The drawings show a man setting out to strike it rich before burying himself in a hole, from which he is eventually rescued. Nashua: J. Riley, 1890. Albumen photograph, 5 ½ x 4 inches on larger mount. A portrait of seven women holding weaving shuttles, most likely mill workers in Nashua. Two large mills, the Nashua Manufacturing Company and the Jackson Manufacturing Company, were active during this period, though we cannot confirm if this picture was taken at either. Generally well preserved with some wear and what looks like a fingerprint on the head of the subject in the upper right of the image, and some stray soiling and marks. Remains in good condition overall.

Description:
Philadelphia, 1876. Autograph letter signed by Cooke. Fine condition. Fine. An interesting and candid letter written by Jay Cooke to [Edwin M.] Lewis, the trustee in charge of Cooke's assets following the dissolution of his company in 1873 and the ensuing financial panic. The letter specifically concerns shares of the Western Land Association. Cooke organized the Western Land Association after investing heavily in the Lake Superior Mississippi Line in 1866, and his overextension and the eventual closing of his company in 1876 led to national panic and financial ruin. Cooke would eventually recover some of his wealth, and this letter attests to his belief that his investments in the midwest would eventually pan out. "Cooke was extremely discouraged by events surrounding the dissolution of his company. He felt betrayed by many whom he had considered friends. In addition, he had not recovered emotionally from the death of his wife in 1871. His financial downturn forced him to move from his estate…

Description:
Chicago: Poole Brothers, 1917. Folding map measuring 38 ½ x 26 ¾ inches. Tape repairs to verso, some tears at folds and edges, still bring and attractive, good to very good overall with excellent restoration potential. A map of the canneries in Alaska, British Columbia and Washington operated by the Deming and Gould Company, who were influential in the growth of the Alaskan salmon trade. The map's date of printing, 1917, suggests that perhaps it was related to the war effort, as salmon demand increased during this period. The Demings, based in Chicago, were influential in the growth of the salmon trade in Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, founding Pacific American Fisheries Inc. in 1899 and continuing in various iterations until their sale of the firm in 1934 due to president E.B. Deming's ailing health. The map shows seventeen different canneries, several on the Alaska peninsula and the one in Bellingham. We find no record of this imprint, only a later and small version held at the University of…

Description:
Mostly Washington, D.C. and North Carolina, 1970. First Edition. Various formats including bulletins, magazines, and photographs, comprising one linear foot in total. Near Fine. The F.B.I. under J. Edgar Hoover showed a willingness to surveil and harass American citizens, perhaps most famously in the COINTELPRO program, while at the same time investigating some instances of domestic terrorism, such as some K.K.K. activities, and some of the racially charged murders in the south. Collected here is a group of materials - agent memos, magazines, anti-Communism papers penned by Hoover, and various bureau publications - that show a time capsule of the bureau in the 1950s-1970s (the group does not include any original casework, internally-circulated photographs or bureau files). The material reflects the volatile time period, with several memos relating to unrest, the murder of Malcolm X, anti-war protesters, and other issues relevant to the Civil Rights era - as well as the degree to which the bureau was…

Bahia, 1928. Folded map. Fine condition. Fine. Teodoro Sampaio was an Afro-Brazilian cartographer, engineer, politician and historian who was very active in Brazil, particularly in Bahia, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. Offered here is Sampaio's map of Bahia from 1928, which updates a map he produced in 1899 of the same region, with updates of the settlement of the region including a detailed inset of the city of BBahio de Todos os Santos on the lower right corner. At the time of the map's production, Sampaio was an authority on Brazilian geography, being a member of the Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia, serving as president in 1922, and a member of the Instituto Histórico e Geográfico Brasileiro and the Instituto Geográfico e Histórico da Bahia, and publishing several books on Brazilian geography. The period between 1899, when the first edition of this map was published, and 1928 saw the development of rubber plantations in Bahia, and the map provides detail…

Description:
Newburgh: Abel A. Peck, 1860. 3 ½ x 2 ¼ albumen print on larger mount. Good. A carte-de-visite copy of a folk art painting probably painted c. 1820s-1830s. William Seymore (1786-1846) was a Methodist minister in Bellvale, New York. Edward Ruttenber and L.H. Clark, in their 1881 History of Orange County, describe him as follows: "In 1817, William Seymour, a colored man, was licensed to exhort; afterwards he was given a local preacher's license, and for many years preached in the vicinity of Bellvale. As one of the first laborers under God, his name is remembered by some still living in this place. His home, while here, was at the house of William Wisner. His portrait, gift of Mr. Samuel Wilson, is in the Bellvale parsonage. William Seymour died at the house of Isaac Still, in the town of Monroe. He retired for the night, after a very happy meeting during the evening in the place, and when called for breakfast he was found dead in the bed. The Master came, his work ended, and he entered into rest."…

Philadelphia: Henszey and Co, 1860. Albumen photograph measuring 3 ½ x 2 ½ inches on mount. Excellent condition with clipped corners and minimal wear. Near Fine. Rachel Wilson Moore, a Quaker from Philadelphia who had strong anti-slavery views, traveled to the Caribbean and South America in the 1860s to try to save her ailing health. She published her journals from the trip under the title Journal of Rachel Wilson Moore, Kept During a Tour to the West Indies and South America, in 1863-64 With Notes from the Diary of her Husband; together with His Memoir. The book described the conditions of the enslaved people in the Caribbean, which she considered to be worse than the conditions in the American South. Offered here is a photograph of Moore, identified on the verso, from the Philadelphia studio Henszey & Co., likely from the late 1860s, showing an elderly Moore in a bonnet. Tama County: J.L. Hudson, 1860. Carte-de-visite photograph measuring 3 ½ x 2 ¼ inches on larger mount. Semi-legible ID on lower portion of image in pencil, some normal wear, very good overall. Very Good. An early and interesting image of Meskwaki subjects seated in a studio setting, likely taken in the 1860s or early 1870s in the CDV era. The subjects wear what appears to be a mix of traditional and western dress, with short haircuts and a Euro-American style hat in the background. The scene appears to be staged, with what looks to be hay underneath the subjects and one of the subjects looking at his hands. Joseph L. Hudson (1828-1906), who operated a studio in Tama, was the photographer. Later examples of Hudson's work are held at the Denver Art Museum.

Description:
Richmond, 1870. Albumen photograph measuring 2 ½ x 4 inches on larger mount. Fine contrast. Fine. A fine portrait of a formally dressed African-American man taken in Richmond in the 1870s by the G.W. Davis studio, possibly taken during the tenure of James Conway Farley, the noted African-American photographer who Davis hired beginning in 1875. From the size of the image we believe this image dates to the 1870s or later as the transition to larger prints and the cabinet card era began. We do not know which photographer was behind the camera, though it is certainly possible that Farley took this picture, as he was one of five photographers working in the studio during his tenure there. When the other photographers complained about Farley, Davis chose to dismiss them and keep Farley employed due to his talent.

Virginia City: Sutterley and Co, 1867. Albumen photograph on mount, 4 x 2 ½ inches. Pauline Cushman was an actress and one of the most successful spies for the Union Army. She ingratiated herself with the Confederate army by toasting Jefferson Davis after one of her performances. She was eventually caught and sentenced to death by hanging. She was spared only due to the arrival of the Union Army. After the war she toured the country giving lectures and performances recounting her experiences as a spy. She eventually headed west, marrying in 1872 in San Francisco and eventually working a range of jobs in Arizona Territory, Texas, and eventually back in San Francisco, where she died in 1893 at age 60 from a morphine overdose. We find no record of this portrait, which was taken by the Sutterley brothers, James and Clement, in their Virginia City, Nevada studio somewhere between 1864 and 1867. The rules for the evening include no selling of alcoholic beverages and no one entering the plaza on horseback.
