New York & London: Abbeville Press, 2001. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good/Very Good. First edition. Large hardback in dustwrapper. 33 × 28.5cm, 272pp + CD in pocket at rear. In an engaging and informed text, John T. Spike explores in detail Caravaggio's scandalous life and provocative work. Placing Caravaggio within the broad panorama of society and ideas at the turn of the 17th century, the author sets a richly detailed stage for an artist who has been called "the first modern painter." Caravaggio (15711610) reflected in his canvases his own desires and spiritual crises to an extent no one ever had imagined possible, and he shocked his contemporaries by portraying the saints and virgins of Christianity with the faces and bodies of his companions and lovers in Rome's demimonde. Accompanying the book is a critical catalogue on CD-ROM in which all of Caravaggio's extant paintings, as well as lost and rejected works, are thoroughly described. Each entry specifies… Read More

London: Legenda, 2014. First Edition. . Hardback. Very Good. First edition. Hardback in laminate boards. 25.5 × 17.5cm, 226pp. Although fictional responses to Caravaggio date back to the painter's lifetime (1571-1610), it was during the second half of the twentieth century that interest in him took off outside the world of art history. In this new monograph, the first book-length study of Caravaggio's recent impact. Laura Rorato provides a panoramic overview of this appropriation by popular culture. The extent of the Caravaggio myth, and its self-perpetuating nature, are brought out by a series of case studies involving authors and directors from numerous countries and literary and filmic texts from a number of genres - from straightforward tellings of his life to crime fiction, homoerotic film and postcolonial literature. Hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 15.5cm, xiv + 337pp. Signed directly to the title page by Christopher Hibbert. This social as well as military history recreates the scenes of the civil war in England, between 1642 and 1649, and is enlivened by character sketches not only of the leading participants (Charles I, Prince Rupert, Oliver Cromwell), but also of the numerous lesser characters, male and female, who took part in the desperate conflict. Families and friends were bitterly divided as men left home to fight for King or Parliament. Castles and towns were besieged and sacked. Houses were plundered, churches desecrated and some 200,000 lives were lost. Condition: This copy is in very good condition.

London: The Bodley Head, 1989. 1st Edition . Hardback. Very Good/Good. First edition, first printing hardback in dustwrapper. 24 × 16cm, 243pp. Signed directly to the title page by Julia Blackburn. During his lifetime Charles Waterton was famous for his eccentricities, but also for his achievements and his opinions. A Yorkshire landowner, he was a notable Victorian figure who turned his park into an animal and bird sanctuary. He was an explorer of tropical rain forests in South America and became an authority on the poisons used by the South American Indians. He was also a taxidermist and published many books, numbering Darwin, Dickens and Roosevelt among his readers. Above all, he was a conservationist who fought to protect nature against the destruction and pollution of Victorian industrialization. The author draws on his surviving papers and seeks to counter the distorted view of him as a mere eccentric. Instead she seeks to reinstate him as the first conservationist of the modern age.… Read More

Description:
Printed for the Author, 2014. 1st Edition . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 19.5 × 13cm, 268pp. Signed to the title page by Ian Keable. Charles Dickens was an unsurpassed writer; and a superb public reader of his own works; he was also a talented actor; but very few know that he was also a conjurer. Up to now this knowledge has been rather hidden away in biographies, with academics considering it of little significance. For the first time Dickens's journey to becoming a conjurer has been researched and narrated: using his own letters and other contemporary reports, the evolution of the novelist to enthusiastic performer is charted. What is particularly unique about this book is that Ian Keable brings his own experiences as a magic historian and professional magician to branch out into related subjects. Who were the conjurers that inspired Dickens? Which tricks did he do? Where did he get them from? What were his strengths and weaknesses as a conjurer? Why did he stop?… Read More

Hardback, illustrated covers. 30.5 × 21.5cm, 156pp. Signed and dedicated by Felicity Aston to the title page. What does it sound like when breath freezes? How do you start a car when it is so cold that fuel turns to wax? How do people live without the sun for half of the year? What is it like to use river ice as a road and what happens when it melts? Curiosity about the day-to-day reality of life at the extremes of climate inspired a 36,000 kilometre journey that chased the onset of winter from London, across Scandinavia and Siberia, to the Pole of Cold - the coldest permanently inhabited place in the world. This collection of stunning photographs and evocative stories gathered during the journey provides insight into the social, cultural and physical implications of winter as perceived by communities that live in some of the harshest environments on the planet. London: Particular Books, 2021. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First edition, first printing. Hardback in dustwrapper. 30.5 × 19.5cm, 416pp. No house embodies the spirit of one dynasty better than Chatsworth. Set in an unspoilt Derbyshire valley, surrounded by wild moorland, and home to the Cavendish family for sixteen generations, this treasure house is filled with works of art and objects - from Nicolas Poussin's The Arcadian Shepherds and Antonio Canova's Endymion to great contemporary paintings by Lucian Freud and David Hockney - which have all, in their time, represented the very best of the new. As Stoker Cavendish, the twelfth Duke of Devonshire, likes to point out: 'Everything was new once.' Following the completion of a decade-long programme of renovations, the exterior of Chatsworth is gleaming, its stone façade newly cleaned and its window frames freshly gilded. Inside, through the inspired juxtaposition of old and modern, its rooms… Read More

Brighton: Royal Pavilion & Museums, 2009. First Edition. . Paperback. Very Good. First edition. Paperback. 27 × 21.5cm, 143pp. China has fascinated the imagination of the West for centuries. The story of chinoiserie in Britain is a dazzling example of contact between two very different cultures. This indispensable and beautifully illustrated guide to the chinoiserie style tells three centuries of stories through rare and exotic objects. Loans from HM The Queen, national museums and private collections include some of the earliest Chinese and China Trade objects exported to Britain. English merchants returned from China with silk, porcelain, tea and lacquer. These fabulous objects inspired local craftsmen to produce their own fantastical pieces using the fanciful imagery of an imaginary China. The Royal Pavilion in Brighton is the most dazzling example of chinoiserie style and extravagance in Britain, and is the inspiration and focus for the major exhibition that this book accompanies.… Read More

Paperback. 18.5 × 12cm, 202pp. "These Swahili songs of love and passion make their first appearance in English translation [by Jan Knappert], printed parallel to their Swahili originals. Previously most attention has been paid to the narrative and epic poems written in difficult literary 'high' Swahili. Ordinary speech is here being used to convey the delicate, erotic and sensuous feelings of the people of the East African Coast over the last few hundred years. This is a rare insight into another culture. Swahili, like English, is a mixed language; it readily takes words from Arabic and the other languages round the Indian Ocean and uses them for its own alluring purposes. Jan Knappert has provided an introduction and notes to help with the densely-strewn allusions." Condition: This copy is in good plus condition. There is some rubbing and chipping to the covers but the contents are in very good order.
