Octavo, 343pp. Brown cloth, title in gilt on spine. Frontispiece portrait with tissue cover. Complete with six full-page illustrations of prison life. (Dornbusch I: N-84) (Nevins I: 192) No record of this first edition can be found on the market. A few copies from 1865 are held in special collections. The 1866 edition is found in Sabin, published by J. Munsell of Albany, NY. (Sabin 27558). The emotional account by Captain Willard Glazier of prison life in the Confederacy and their attempts to escape to the north. The book is based on a diary but was "dressed up" for postwar propaganda purposes. Other works by Willard Glazier include: Down the Great River, Heroes of Three Wars, Headwaters of the Mississippi, Three Years in the Federal Cavalry and Ocean to Ocean on Horseback.

Octavo, xvi, 323pp. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine, clean text but very light toning to endpapers and edges of text block. Stated "first edition" on copyright page. In publisher's dust jacket with crossed flags on front panel, retail price on front flap, small closed tear and crease on bottom edge of back panel, light fading along spine. Overall a very good example of this original history of an all-German New York regiment in the Civil War.
