The collection includes 125 titles, most printed in Dublin and London, and nearly all in first edition. All are bound in original cloth or near contemporary bindings and the collection is in excellent condition. One of the features of the collection is the number of titles written by Irish women. Nearly twenty-five percent of the publication are by women and many others are dedicated to women.

Vannes, 1851. Folio.  410 x 270 mm., [16 x 10 ¾ inches].    5 leaves, 1 blank.  Manuscript in ink on rectos only.  Highly legible and decorative.  A charming calligraphic manuscript by a young female student from Vannes during the middle of the 19th century.  .

[?Philadelphia, Pa.], 1840. Calling Card printed one side only. 40 x 75 mm.,  [1 ½  x 3 inches]. Painter's name scratched out and  "Miss Louise Bradley, West Springfield," is penciled in Engraved border, pinholes.  James W. Williams was a miniature portrait painter. He also experimented with early photographic processes to produce his portraits. He was born in England about 1787 and set up shop in Philadelphia. The Smithsonian holds two of his works; a Talbotype paper print with applied color of Edward Robinson Squibb, and an ivory type of two girls (untitled). Ivory types were  positive photographic prints resembling a hand-painted ivory miniature and were first produced in the mid-1850s. As the term suggests, some of these images were made on thin sheets of actual ivory or artificial ivory made of pigmented and hardened gelatin. Modena: Circolo Tipografico Modenese, 1894. Broadside Calligraphic Manuscript.  398 x 49 mm., [15 ½ x 19 ½ inches].   Written in red and black ink, with lettering highlighted with gold and blue.  Capital letters enhanced with flourishes in red ink and with a corner piece in purple ink with a small watercolor of a chef dressed in a ceremonial toque against a blue background.  The paper was folded in fours, some discoloration caused by age at the edges, one small tear to left margin.  The certificate has pin holes in the four corners where the paper was pinned to a wall board.  The name "Pietro" is written on a small piece of paper and pasted over what must have been a mistake.  Very good condition. Large 4to.  280 x 215 mm., [11 x 8 ½ inches]. 148 pp.  Illustrated with 200 plates of plans, elevations, details, and practical stair-building on 54 plates and in the text.  Contemporary sheep, Black leather label with title in gilt on spine; some rubbing to binding; text block clean and bright; six examples of dried leaves inserted and now removed, causing browning to paper stock on verso and recto of the page.  Ownership inscription in pencil of "Harvey Bricknell, Barnard Vt." on front free endpaper. With faults a very good, sound copy in original binding. First American edition.  Sandor Marai was a ardent anti-facist who emigrated from Hungary to Italy and then to the United States just after World War II.  This novel, set in 18th century Italy, fictionarlizes an episode in Casanova's life after escaping from the Venetian prison.  Following his escape he reengages with the love of his life, who is now the wife of a nobleman from Bolzano.  "Brimming with the richness and psychological tension that made Embers (Marai's first novel), and international best seller, Casanova in Bolzano is further proof that Sandor Marai stands among the twentieth century's greatest literary voices.

New York: Harcourt, Brace & Company, 1998. 8vo.  210 x 145 mm., [8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches].  [viii], 272, [ii] pp.  Publisher's cloth, dust jacket; rear of jacket with a cut from a blade about two inches in length.   First edition, later printing.  We received and reviewed historical novel by the author of Ingenious Pain , which won the James Tait Black Memorial Fiction Prize and has been translated into eighteen languages.  His second novel, Casanova in Love, tells the story of Casanova arrival in England after his banishment from the Venetian Republic in 1763.    Casanova is enchantged by an elusive Frendch emigre and the story of his pursuit is the basis for Andrew Miller's novel.

Venezia: Per Pietro Savioni, 1782. 12mo. 190 x 110 mm. (7 3/4 x 4 /12 inches). [2], 7-293pp., missing preliminaries, pp. 1-6.  Contemporary vellum; recased, with title-page soiled, otherwise a very good copy. Rare first edition of this catalogue of Italian historiography, written by Jacopo Morelli, Librarian of the Biblioteca Marciana, Venice.  It is based on the collection of Italian history formed by Tommaso Giuseppe Farstti and given to the Marciana. It complements the work of the Venetian printer Giovanni Antonio Coleti, who in 1779 published his bibliographical catalogue of histories of Italian cities.  This worked cited over 3000 titles, while the work by Morelli added an additional 2000 titles to subject.  Like Coleti, Morelli organized his catalogue by city and includes a full title, place of printing, date and format information. Very good copy of the Silvestri catalogue for 1827.  Includes thousands of titles in Italian, French, German, and Latin covering all fields of human endeavor, including science, history, art, literature and travel.  The numbers of books on science and medicine are impressive and provide a window into the fields of study that were collected in the first third of the 19th century. .

Priced booksellers catalogue containing 17th, 18th and 19th century Italian books in all fields of literature, history, science and the fine arts.  Catalogue includes an impressive number of titles documenting the Italian Enlightenment, including the works of Baretti, Beccaria, Galiani, Pietro and Alessandro Verri and many others.  The collection of contemporary science and natural history is also impressive.   The final fifty-six pages list books in Latin and French.  Rare catalogue from a provincial bookseller and printer from Pesaro in the Abruzzi.

(9 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches). xii, (first leaf blank), 328 pp. 19th century cloth backed marbled paper boards; inner hinge cracked yet very sound.  Bookplate of Anthony Hobson.  Very good copy of a rare catalogue. First edition. Catalogue of the Coleti Bros. collection of Italian local history, called by Archer Taylor, "a remarkable library...rare". The catalogue is arranged by city and describes the published works on the history and topography of each locality, including many smaller towns and villages in addition to the major printing centers of the country. According to Besterman the catalogue includes over 3000 citations and features an index of Latin names and authors, making it a useful bibliographical tool. Milano: [Branca e Dupuy]: Dalla tipogafia e libreria di Felice Busconi, 1834. 8vo. 200x 110 mm (8 x 4 inches). clvi, 211 pp. Contemporary paste paper boards, some minor staining, paper label rubbed;  some minor evidence of mold to the final 15 leaves, no longer active and no real damage to the paper stock. The copy appears to be the second catalogue of books for sale offered by this Milanese bookseller, Branca e Dupuy.  A copy listed in NUC of a 1833 edition is located at Columbia and the Newberry Library. The first 154 pages of this catalogue is a manual for booksellers and contains a series of essays on the origins of printing, the first presses in Italy, the art of printing in the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries.  Equally as important are Branca's essays on bibliography, a bookselling and publishing. An early collection catalogue of the prints of Marc'Antonio Raimondi, formed by the little know 19th century artist, Gianantonio Armano.  In the introduction to his catalogue Armano outlines its purpose and method of purchasing the collection over time.  It includes over 900 prints, 600 of which are original, the remainder were reengraved or copied from the original.  The catalogue is organized in six chapters and each of the prints described include details about the content and some commentary on importance.  A note on the verso of the title-page suggests that those interested in purchasing the collection should contact Ulisse Giudi in Bologna or Francesco Cardinali in Florence. Rare provincial bookseller's catalogue containing 18th and 19th century books for sale, including a list of title printed by Tomassini which appears on the back wrapper.  The books represent all fields of study, including history, mathematics, philosophy, music and literature.  There are also sections of French books, Latin books, and an addendum to the music section.  He also carries engravings and lithographic images for sale.  The music section in particular includes books on piano-forte and organ, and books for the violin, clarinet, and flute, as well as choral music with the accompaniment of the piano-forte.  Tomassini was also the publisher of Giuseppe Bragazzi's essay Delle pubbliche biblioteche (see Bragazzi above). Interesting private library of printed books, maps and manuscripts donated to the Società Colombaria, founded in 1735. The catalogue is a good example of a collection that reflects the mission of the institution. Boston, 1855. Broadside printed on blue paper.  330 x 205 mm., [13 x 8 inches].  Printed in two columns on light blue paper. Numerous horizontal folds, some with separations in margin, otherwise about very good. John Raynolds, the publisher (with Joel Nourse) of The New England Farmer conceived a plan for creation of subscription agricultural libraries around 1850. Raynolds would supply a core collection of books at a price to be met by selling shares within the community. The caption title in this broadside is followed by an alphabetical list of approximately 120 titles, including well-known American authors like Lewis F. Allen, Samuel W. Cole, A. J. Downing, Edward Hitchcock, Charles M. Hovey, James. F. S.
