Description:
S.l. (probably Santa Barbara, CA), 1936. Unbound. Very good. Large 4to. (8 1/2 x 11"). Unpaginated: 23 chapters + Epilogue, each individually paginated. Typewritten on "Superior Manifold - Esleeck Mfg Co." Preserved in a protective cloth case. This appears to be the only significant Cameron Rogers manuscript still in private ownership (the University of Oregon has ten of them, for which see below). It is an early typescript of the novel "Manila Galleon," composed while the author's working title was "That Year's Galleon." The novel, a work of historical fiction, explores the Manila-Acapulco gallion trade, and is set in the Philippines in 1621. Among the characters are: Don Alonzo Fajardo y Tenza, the Governor; his disturbingly beautiful wife Dona Catalina Maria Sembrano; Don Juan de la Mesa y Suero, the captain of the Spanish galleon La Nuestra Senora de la Vida which sails from Manila to Acapulco. The work was published in 1936 by D. Appleton-Century Company, New York (consisting of 232 pages).… Read More

Description:
New York: Transcribed and Illustrated at Cooper Union, 1952. Very good. Small folio (261 x 167 mm). Calligraphic manuscript on paper. [2], 8 pp. Loosely inserted ink and watercolor drawing. Original hand-sewn blue wrappers; stitched to upper wrapper is a paper label lettered in manuscript: "The Harper and Other Fables." Old scribbles on verso of loose illustration; slightest soiling on front wrapper. Manuscript written by Lawrence Zimmerman as a Cooper Union student, being an assignment in calligraphy and design. While the calligraphy is very good, the illustration is merely a sketch of sorts; Zimmerman apparently thought little of it, having written in pencil several names, addresses, and dates on the back. Zimmerman went on to pursue a career in architectural design, and was himself a great collector of World's Fair memorabilia.

Description:
Chicago: Gwindell Printing Co. for Pepsodent, 1935. Good. Together 3 items: large folding map (38.5 x 50 cm) folded three times as issued (EXCELLENT condition); accompanied by original printed letter (designed to look "handwritten") in Ebonics (a little smudged, otherwise GOOD); with the original mailing envelop with the faces of Amos and Andy on the front (FAIR condition only: soiled and stained, back flap torn, last name and address of the addressee cancelled in ink). Offensive fictional map of the town where Amos and Andy reputedly resided, with streets, buildings, and houses from the show identified. The text is written in Ebonics and is filled with misspellings and backwards letters. "Amos 'n Andy" was a wildly popular American radio sitcom about two black characters, written and voiced by two white actors. The show was overtly rascist, playing into stereotypes of simple-minded, clownish, and lazy African-Americans. The show was sponsored by Pepsodent until 1938. The importance of Pepsodent's… Read More

Washington DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1923. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 563, [1] pp. Profusely illustrated with 50 plates and 24 text figures. Original green cloth, blocked in black with illustration of a bull's head on front cover. ¶ Strange U.S. Government production illustrating -- with alarming realism -- the diseases of cattle. This is the finest copy we have ever seen, unmarked and clearly unread. Contains highly curious illustrations, some in color, created by a now-forgotten U.S. Government artist. It would appear that *fine* copies of this book are now scarce. Must be seen to be fully appreciated.

Paris: Jules Gay, 1863. Hardcover. Very good. 16mo. xv, [1], 56 pp. With 2 engraved plates depicting different models of "ceintures de chastete" i.e. chastity belts (trifle foxed). Bound by [Cyprien] Lhuinte of Grenoble, green half morocco over blue marbled boards (spine a little sunned, extremities slightly worn), top edges gilt, others untrimmed. Highly curious work containing a legal argument against forced use of chastity belts -- unknown to David Murray "Lawyers' Merriments." ¶ From the preface (unsigned, but by Gustave Brunet): "There exists few trials as bizarre as this one, and we believe that the case involving Master Freydier remains unparalleled in the annals of legal literature" (translation). ¶ THE CASE: Pierre Berlhe (age 36) "seduced" Marie Lajon (age 18), imprisoned her and forced her to wear a chastity belt after she had refused to marry him. She lodged a complaint with the civic authorities, and retained the counsel of Nimes attorney Freydier (his first name is not recorded). The… Read More

Contemporary ownership notes on frontipiece, title, and elsewhere. A child too lazy to be a bookseller! ¶ Well-read copy of this 1820 American cautionary "nautical tale" for children, preserved in charming contemporary American "Dutch" gilt floral wrappers. The first tale includes a wayward younger brother who "had been placed in several situations; but, too indolent for labour, and too volatile for application, he had abandoned some, and had been discarded from others. S.l.: s.n., 1835. Very good. Collection of seven Chinese gouache paintings on pith paper (sizes vary: ca. 300 x 220 mm, some blank areas in fragile pith paper cracked or with loss, not affecting gouache paintings -- SEE IMAGES), a few retaining their original blue silk border edges. Each painting is hinged onto stiff lig-free board (377 x 277 mm) utilizing existing (old) cloth hinges and very lightly tipped onto backing board using reversable adhesive; light-green vertical cloth "window" mattes, in front of which are protective mylar sheets, the entire ensemble preserved in a protective cloth case. FASCINATING COLLECTION OF SEVEN CHINESE GOUACHE PAINTINGS ON PITH PAPER OF PERUVIAN AND ARGENTINEAN "COSTUMBRISMO." Description:
1956. Fair. All in original wrappers, conditions vary from fair to very good (some wrappers chipped and worn; some textblocks browned and brittle on account of the WWI paper supply). One pamphlet is ex-Harvard (duplicate) with associated markings, another is a presentation copy. Small collection of 8 French pamphlets celebrating the patron saint of France, Jeanne d'Arc (1412-1431). Reflects the continued fascination and scholarly interest with this remarkable young woman, her courage and her leadership, and how inspiring she has continued to be, even after nearly 600 years. The most interesting pamphlet in the collection -- in our opinion -- is Henri Debout's "Jeanne d'Arc et les archives anglaises" (1894) in which the author examines documents preserved in early English manuscripts that had been unexplored by French scholars. None of the pamphlets are in the Boston Public Library which holds the largest Joan of Arc collection in America. From the Dorothy Sloan Collection.

New-London [CT]: Printed by Timothy Green, 1760. 16mo. [2], 118 pp. Collation: A-P4. With the Articles for the Administration of Church Discipline bound in with its own title page and the Timothy Green 1760 imprint, but the pagination and signatures continuous. Bound in contemporary American calf over thin wooden "scaleboard." Spine chipped at the head and the foot; upper corner of the front board broken, some chipping to the other corners; a bit toned and lightly foxed; in good condition. There can be no doubt that this scaleboard binding was made in Connecticut ca. 1760-1763: not only was the book printed in New-London for the exclusive use of Connecticut congregationalists, but the first blank leaf is inscribed: "From the Colony of Connecticut to the Church att Somars [sic] 1763" (i.e. at Somers, CT). Frankfurt: I.G. Farbenindustrie AG, 1926. First Edition in French. Very good. Slim 8vo. Original publisher's yellow pictorial card wrappers. [8] pp. + 4 sample cards displaying 24 color samples, original acetate tissue guards present. Light shelf wear, wrappers very slightly soiled and toned. Easily the most attractive I.G. Our catalogue, which is not listed in OCLC, features a cover adorned with highly stylized "modernist" illustrations of a lady's newly-polished crimson shoe; a box of bright yellow candles; and a shiny floor with a wax jar. The contents of the trade catalogue are "Sudan-colored" dyes produced by the German chemical company I.G. Farben. The dyes from this collection, first introduced in the 1920s, were employed in such household products as shoe and floor polish, candles (all of which are depicted on the cover), and cleaning materials. The work comprises 4,645 pages, in which endless manuscripts, located in thousands of libraries all over the world, are described and excerpted. Description:
Hannover: Totalkunstbetrieb Timm Ulrichs, 3 Hannover 1, Postfach 6043, 1971. Very good. 2 mimeograph sheets (295 x 210) printed in blue, folded twice (vertically and horizontally). Fading along fold, slightly age-toned). Preserved in a mylar sleeve. Rare: not in KVK or OCLC. Contemporary Madrid binding by Francisco Cifuentes: sheep acid-stained in hues of green and brown, gilt roll border and a center device of Royal arms of Ferdinand VII, spine gilt extra (extremities and joints with some unobjectionable wear). THE IDEAL COPY, BOUND BY FRANCISCO CIFUENTES, BINDER TO THE SPANISH COURT, BEARING THE ARMS OF FERNANDO VII KING OF SPAIN, AND PRINTED AT THE ROYAL PRESS BY THE HEIRS OF JOAQUIN IBARRA. THE BINDER Francisco Cifuentes is justly considered to be "one of the best binders in Madrid in the early 19th-century" alongside his contemporaries Santiago Martin and Antonio Suarez (Vicente Castaneda, "Etiquetas de Encuadernadores," in:… Read More
