Joest Lips(1547-1606) greatest work was on Tacitus, according to the 11th EB. Johann Gronov (1611-71) was a German classical scholar who wrote on Tacitus, among others. Both vols with bkplt of the politician Lord John Townshend(1757-1833); the son of George, the first Marquess Townshend, and Lady Charlotte Compton. The bkplts are his engraved signature, Lord John Townshend. Contemp full calf. MISSING spine labels. Text with scattered light foxing and age browning. .

Text with a bit of type offset but no aging, foxing, marginalia, etc. Furthur, book tends to stay closed when stood on its spine, a sign of having been read with care, if at all. Mildly interesting gift note dated 1800. In Latinized German, and both my Latin and German is zero, but it seems to a note presenting this book to a promising recent graduate of a Bergensis school.
