Description:
(Postenkill, NY: Kaldewey Press, 1987. Kaldewey, Gunnar. Folio. (36)pp. One of forty-five copies in a plexiglass binding by Christian Zwang of Hamburg. Signed by the author/artist/printer, Gunnar Kaldewey. With numerous monochromatic and two-tone illustrations. Written, illustrated, designed, and printed by Gunnar Kaldewey as Volume 5 of the Kaldewey Press series. In 1977, Kaldewey printed New York, his first book about America. Ten years later, California Time was published as a counterpoint to that volume. In it, Kaldewey offers his observations about California's landscapes, both natural and manmade, in prose that ranges from playful to bleak. He sees the landscape with an artist's eye, describing the "simmering city" and the "juicy orange of the West." These verbal images are illustrated in Kaldewey's stylized manner, including one double-page spread showing the Pacific Ocean in aqua and gray on a transparency. A remarkable production by one of America's leading contemporary book artists. Housed…

Description:
(N.p., 1989. Leavitt, Nancy. Small quarto. 10ff. A one-of-a-kind manuscript, completely hand-bound, lettered, painted, and signed by the artist Nancy Leavitt. Leavitt's superlative skill as a calligrapher is clear in this illustration of Suzanne Vega's song of loss and unrequited love, "Calypso." Vega retells the beginning of the Odyssey from the perspective of Ulysses's captor, the nymph Calypso, and the wild flourish of Leavitt's letters captures the raw emotion expressed by Calypso as she lets her long-captive lover go. The pages are speckled and blotched with color, as if by the nymph's tears or the spray of the ocean that surrounds her island home, and which now carries away her sole companion. Pages of rainbow-hued text are interleaved with soft, translucent paper with dried flowers. At the center of the book is a painting of Calypso's island paradise, created with overlapping layers of paper painted with flowers and brushed with green and gold. The book is meant to be read along with Vega's…

Description:
(Weimar): Cranach Press, 1931. Gill, Eric. Tall octavo. 32, (2)pp. From the French edition of 164 copies, this is one of 50 on Japon. Printed in blue and black, and illustrated throughout with eleven wood engravings and decorative initials by Eric Gill. This ancient dialogue between the Bride and Groom is one of the most lyrical love passages of all time. Bound in full orange morocco by Otto Dorfner, with gilt tooling and titling to covers. T.e.g. Small spot of discoloration to upper cover, otherwise a fine copy of a book of distinction, sought after as a major illustrated private press book and one of the outstanding efforts of the Cranach Press. It is worth noting that this book appeared at a time when the effects of the Great Depression were really being felt. This was not lost on Kessler, who remarked in a letter to Gill that "one must hope that a sufficient number of people and fortunes have survived the crisis and will continue to buy fine books and thus make their production possible."
