Description:
22/02/1825. Robert M. Patterson With manuscript and printed material documenting the work of the pro-canal Committee of 24 and the Pennsylvania Legislature to open westward communicationBy the close of the year 1824 the State of New York's chief internal improvement project, the Erie Canal, was nearing completion. It was already so successful that the state began to feel the positive economic effects - and also to promote them. It was rapidly tapping the commercial resources of the ""new west""; trading was brisk; land values were increased; the influx of immigrants was add_ing to its population, giving rise to towns, and gaining for New York even greater potential economic strength. The rise of New York posed a challenge to the other states, and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania was the first to accept the challenge. Merchants, traders, bankers, and the foremost residents of Philadelphia were concerned with the jolt the Erie Canal gave to their economic bid for Eastern seaboard supremacy. During 1825… Read More

1870. Charles Darwin Our first Darwin signed photograph in all these yearsCharles Darwin, English naturalist whose scientific theory of evolution by natural selection became the foundation of modern biology and evolutionary studies. Darwin's explanation for the great unfolding of life through time - evolution by natural selection - transformed our understanding of the living world, and focused attention on the cumulative inherited change in a population of organisms through time leading to the appearance of new forms: the process by which new species or populations of living things develop from preexisting forms through successive generations. Darwin revolutionized the understanding of the development of living things, as Einstein revolutionized our understanding of the physical universe. An attractive Carte de Visite signed (""Ch. Darwin”), circa late 1870s, very good condition though with a few small adhesive tape marks. The photograph was taken by Elliott & Fry, 56 Baker Street, London, and… Read More

Description:
Jun-44. Charles de Gaulle ALSs of DeGaulle from during World War II are extremely rare, this being our first everThe Allies’ northward advance up the Italian peninsula to Rome was an important part of the plan to create a southern front and draw German troops to Italy to oppose them, even as the landing on D-Day approached. This would also liberate portions of Italy, and make the reclamation of France all the more likely. To bypass the German line in their way, the Allies landed some 50,000 seaborne troops, with 5,000 vehicles, at Anzio, only 33 miles south of Rome, on January 22, 1944. The landing surprised the Germans and met, at first, with very little opposition; but the force at Anzio spent so much time consolidating its position there that the Germans were able, with their reserves, to develop a powerful counteroffensive against it on February 3. The beachhead was thereby reduced to a very shallow dimension, while the German defenses at Monte Cassino held out against a new assault by Mark… Read More
