Description:
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1937. 3rd printing (stated). Hardcover. [nice clean book with minimal shelfwear, one-time owner's initials plus date & place of purchase and a brief commentary in ink along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath jacket flap); the jacket has some minor wear at the spine extremities, but is overall bright and attractive]. A sharp-looking copy of the first "D.A. Doug Selby" mystery, a series to which Gardner turned for the occasional break from cranking out Perry Mason books (at least until 1949, when the last of the nine Selby books appeared). The jacket design on this early G&D reprint is identical to that of the William Morrow first edition. Much less common (and considerably more durable) than the cheaply-produced Triangle Books edition from the 1940s. .

(Los Angeles]: (No Publisher Stated). Fine. 2011. First Edition. Hardcover. (textured silver boards; no dust jacket, as issued) [nice clean copy, essentially as-new with no discernible wear]. (color and B&W photographs) Catalog for the exhibition "Treasures of the Walt Disney Archives," which was presented at D23 Expo 2011 at the Anaheim (California) Convention Center, and was "more than double the size" of the original exhibition, which had been part of the same event two years earlier. It was a showcase for "a treasure trove of crown jewels from the Walt Disney Archives Collection, including props, set pieces, photographs, costumes, and memorabilia from beloved Disney films and entertainment and important artifacts from the Company's unique and extraordinary history." Quite scarce; produced in an edition of just 2,000 copies, this is a must-have for any Disney history aficionado. .

New York: William Morrow & Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. 1964. First American Edition. Hardcover. [a few shallow dents in bottom edges of boards, otherwise a nice clean solid copy with minimal shelfwear; jacket shows some light soiling on the rear panel]. Novel set in the South Pacific, about a Dutch tramp-steamer captain who "rescues" a mysterious prisoner who's being held in chains in the hold of another ship, and gets a lot more than he bargained for. "Red, the prisoner, turns out to be a mercenary soldier, a trouble-maker, a womanizer. But on Christ's Island, with its idyllic Christian community, Red's diabolical genius becomes useful when the island is invaded by civilization in the form of an international task force setting up an airstrip." The jacket blurb notes that "most of [the author's] novels have become motion pictures" -- among them "Mister Moses" and "The Devil at Four O'Clock" -- but this… Read More

New York/London: Harper & Brothers. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. [solid clean book, minor wear to extremities, slight bumping to bottom rear corner; jacket has small closed tears at a couple of folding points, a touch of soiling]. "Adventures of a gentleman gigolo. . . . the life and amorous exploits of Henry St. Aubin, who fought the World War triumphantly from the tents of Brightmouth. Chorus man and gigolo of inflammable elderly ladies, he trips his light fantastic toe through many a palais de danse, and through the gilded splendors of most of the European hotels de luxe. Of course, the ladies respond generously in the form of little gifts, but at last love comes to him in the Rolls-Royce of the chaste and lovely Victoria Virginia Artemisia Spanker. Burlesque? Of course, and hilarious on every pace. Here the Lounge Lizard exposes himself for the noble creature he is." The author was prolific and popular in his day, but as one source… Read More

New York: A.L. Burt Company. Fair in Poor dj. (c.1930). Reprint. Hardcover. NOISBN . [well-worn ex-rental library book with associated elements: a big stamp on the front pastedown ("American Lending Library Inc. -- Never Sold / Only Loaned"), a typewritten blurb (cribbed from the jacket text) pasted to the ffep; the jacket is backed with brown paper and thoroughly glued down at the flaps, with a large chip at the top of the front panel (taking about half the title with it), about half the spine missing, heavy edge- and surface-wear]. Contemporary reprint of Powell's fourth novel, generally considered one of her best early works; apparently printed from the Farrar & Rinehart plates (including the F&R colophon on the copyright page). Alas, this particular copy (both book and jacket) has been mistreated almost from the get-go; however, the jacket is quite rare in any incarnation, and to given it the best spin possible, at least the charming front panel illustration is… Read More
