A pair of items relating to Angelo Herndon and the International Labor Defense's efforts on behalf of the Scottsboro Boys in 1936 in Chicago. The flier advertises an appearance by Herndon at the Metropolitan Community Church at 4100 South Parkway. The flier urges readers to send protest telegrams to President Roosevelt and Governor Bibb Graves of Alabama demanding the Scottsboro Boys' release. It adds" The United Action of all people, black and white will stop Jim Crowism, lynching and frame-up of innocent workers." The second item, a ticket for a separate event involving Herndon on Sept 14th, where he appeared alongside Clarence Norris and an unidentified speaker with the last name Moore at a mass meeting. New York: E. & H.T. Anthony Company, 1888. First Edition. Large 8vo, wraps, 115 pp. 7 x 10 ½ inches. Good. Edward Anthony and his brother Henry operated the largest photographic supply company in the United States in the late nineteenth century. Edward operated a small photography practice before converting his business to a supply house. Henry came on board in 1852. The brothers operated successful business for the decades following, until Edward's death in 1888. This trade catalog, published the same year as Edward's death, provides an overview of the photographic technologies of the day, with all aspects of the process represented including photographer's props. The Anthony firm published a series of instructional books on photography, and acted as distributors for British periodicals. A scarce catalog, with eight copies held (the varying cover title and title listed on the title page have led to multiple entries). Description:
Fine. A single page document, signed by Rapier, showing collection revenue from a retail dealer in malt liquors. James Rapier was an African-American politician during the reconstruction era who served as United States Representative from Alabama from 1873-1875. After losing a re-election bid to Jaramiah Haralson in 1877, Rapier turned his attention to the emigration movement. "Appointed collector of internal revenue for the Second Alabama District in 1877, he used the office to urge former slaves to leave Alabama and settle in the West. The black man, he asserted, would never be accorded equal rights or economic opportunity in the South. He traveled several times to Kansas, purchased land for a settlement in Wabaunsee County along the route of the Kansas-Pacific Railway, gave pro-emigration speeches in Alabama, and testified in Washington, D.C., before a Senate committee on emigration." - ANB. A fine example of a scarce… Read More

Description:
New York, 1863. Document measuring 9 ¾ x 8 inches, folded. Signed by George Opdyke and others. Very Good with some splitting at folds else fine. Very Good. In July 1863, the Civil War draft in New York City led to protests, escalating into widespread riots by July 14th. The Irish-born Colonel Henry O'Brien, who had been put in charge of recruiting for the New York 11th Infantry, would die gruesomely in the riots, highlighting the class elements of the unrest which existed alongside the racial elements. Born in Ireland in the 1820s, O'Brien had served with Company H of the 155th New York State Infantry before resigning in February 1863. He returned to New York, promoted to Colonel in June, tasked with recruiting for the 11th New York State Volunteers. The aggressive mandate coincided with high casualty rates for Irish New Yorkers in the Union Army. The Battle of Chancellorsville and Gettysburg increased the challenges, coupled with the perceived injustice of the $300 exemption clause in the… Read More

Description:
Paris: Charles Chevalier, 1854. First Edition. 12mo, wraps, 88 pp. A near fine copy with some wear to extremities of wraps and fine contents. Near Fine. A scarce early photographic manual by the anatomist Julien Fau, who was best known for his lithographic works on human anatomy. This is an early manual of the collodion process. Quite uncommon, with eleven copies held institutionally, five in North America. Little is known about Fau's involvement with photography, though given his interest in the human form, it would be fair to assume he may have employed it for the process of anatomical studies. An exceptionally clean copy, from the library of the noted collector Otto Oren Fisher. Roosens and Salu 6522.
