Amstelaedami (Amsterdam): Georgium Gallet, 1702. [118], 316, [8], 88, [60], 246pp, [10]. Full later (c. 1815) morocco, raised bands, spine in six panels, authors and title in gilt to second panel, panels with triple fillet frame, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, shell patterned marbled endpapers. Ex-library copy with ink stamp to title, but no other signs. Rubbed to extremities, front joint split but holding well, internally some light browning throughout, occasional chipping to fore-edges, H6 with an old repair to fore-edge, Xx3 and 4 torn to bottom margin. With engraved frontispiece and six plates, title in red and black, red ruled throughout. Binding is by Antoine Chaumont, with his ticket to reverse of front marbled endpaper (at the Foin St. Jacques 18 address), described by Ramsden as "one of the most important of the 1800-1820 binders" (See Ramsden, French Bookbinders pp52/53). London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. xvi, [2], 624pp, plates. Later half-calf and marbled paper over boards from the parts, raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, contrasting author label to third, remaining panels gilt with volute corner pieces, flower head centre piece with small roundels to top, bottom, left and right, marbled endpapers. Spine faded, slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally the plates often have the usual browning to edges, but generally fairly bright and clean. Bound from the original parts, several of the plates (twenty) are bound in twice, several covers from the parts are bound in at the rear, with a couple of the Dombey Advertisers. Extra-illustrated with both sets of the portraits (twelve portraits) of the characters, again illustrated by Phiz, with the original wrappers bound in to rear. Three volumes complete, 1738-1741 - Volume One, [5], ii-viii, [1], ii-xi, [4], 2-678pp (with pages 125-6 and 139-40 omitted); Volume Two, [5], 2-388pp, [8] (with pages 46-49 duplicated and the second page 48 mispaginated as 52, pages 229-236 duplicated and 237-244 omitted) and Volume Three, maps and plans. Uniformly bound in full panelled calf, raised bands, spines in seven panels, title label to second panel, author/volume label to third, remaining panels gilt with central floral spray lozenge and volute corner pieces, covers with rolled panel design and gilt roll to edges. Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1842. 26pp, 44pp, folding plans. Original cloth, with original paper label to upper cover, primrose endpapers. Slightly rubbed, spine slightly faded, paper label browned, minor chipping to spine ends and corners. Internally lightly foxed throughout, a couple of pages with marginal soiling, but nothing too obtrusive. Previous owners blind stamp to title and first page. Complete with seven folding plans. First Edition. Hardback. Good+. 8vo.

Modern half calf and boards, raised bands with spines in six panels, leather title label to second panel, volume numbers lettered direct to fourth panel, date to foot. Some minor wear to extremities, but still very solid. Internally some light foxing and staining, but generally fairly clean and bright. Tear to margin of 16I and 23T has been bound in upside down and back to front. Title pages in red and black. Fourth edition of Johnson's magnum opus, one of (probably) 1250 copies (Strahan's printing account, see Fleeman) and it was published on the 25th January 1773 at £4, 10s. Fleeman 55.4D/4a. Modern full calf by Temple Bookbinders, raised bands, spine in six panels, calf title label to second panel, contrasting calf volume label to third, blind roll to board edges. Externally near fine. Internally generally lightly browned and lightly foxed throughout, sometimes heavier, stain to bottom corner at gutter for most of 'A' in volume one, but generally clean. Small amount of loss to N4 in volume two, nicking text with loss to one word, several small nicks and tears to page edges, previous owner's name to head of titles. The Fourth edition, the first Dublin and first quarto edition of Johnson's monumental work. Fleeman 55.4D/5a. First Thus. Full Calf. Good. 4to.

Bath: Richard Cruttwell, 1814. Two sermons bound as one - 'Divine Providence', 23pp, [1]; 'Divine Favour', 23pp, [1]. Half vellum and paper over boards, smooth back, title in gilt to spine, with diaper pattern gilt decoration to head and tail of spine, gilt crown to middle of covers, a.e.g., blue endpapers. Slightly rubbed, internally lightly browned but generally clean. The first title has 'Warner's Sermon on the Peace 1814' to head of title. The second title was a sermon published to aid a fund for the benefit of the families of the British soldiers who died at Waterloo, the total of the collection is noted to the foot of the title (98 pounds and four shillings).
