Recipes submitted to the newspaper by the readers, in response to the question, "What do You Know About Fish?" Very good in near very good wrapper, with handsome multicolor design by "JH". London: Associate Newspapers, Ltd, 1920. Octavo, 200 pages plus advertisements. Mrs. Peel, formerly Co-Director of Woman's Service, Ministry of Food and Director of the "Daily Mail" newspaper Domestic Bureau, presents an indexed recipe book with processes, procedures, and household tips. The "Daily Mail" Cookery Book is the outcome of the "Daily Mail" Food Bureau, which in one year issued to its readers 268,289 recipes. In her introduction, Mrs. Peel cites the resourcefulness needed during the "Great War" and how it has resulted in a nation of better and more resourceful cooks. Green boards with slight discoloration, otherwise good copy.

Third Edition, following the first of 1891 (vol. 2, no 4.), and the second of 1892 (vol. 5, no. 2), both of 32 pages. A quirky book, likely because its contents were pulled from a variety of professional cookbooks in sections. Short sections of recipes include: Dessert Wafers, Fruit Waters, Dates & Figs, Wine Jellies, etc. Internally clean and sound. In tan wrappers, titled in black; some edgewear and chipping to spine. Near very good. Scarce. [OCLC locates just one copy of this edition (George Mason U.), and five copies combined of the first and second edition].

Philadelphia: North Brothers Mfg. Co, 1895. Duodecimo-sized booklet, 104 pages. Later printing, originally issued 1890. Another of the many books of Sarah Tyson Rorer, Director of the Philadelphia Cooking School, and author of Mrs. Rorer's Cook Book. The book's publishers were the manufacturers of the Gem Freezer, and ice cream maker, and the recipes are for ice creams and ices. Also includes descriptions with illustrations, of a variety of kitchen tools and machines sold by North Brothers. Some small chips to edge of text block; light soiling and rubbing to red-printed publisher's illustrated printed wrappers. Good.

Small stain to edge of wrappers. Oxidation to staples. Wrapper printed in dark red and gray. Near fine.

New York: Felicie, Inc, 1973. Large quarto (31.5 x 22 cm.), 324 pages. Profusely illustrated. Pictorial endpapers feature Dalí paintings that incorporate food. FIRST EDITION, English language issue. "[E]laborated with great precision by a 'chef' wishing to remain in the most secret anonymity" (colophon), this fantastical cookbook features fifty-six recipes including many from Lasserre, Maxim's, la Tour d'Argent, and le Buffet de la gare de Lyon, many of which featured in Dalí and Gala's extravagant dinner parties. Illustrated with color photographs of the dishes and the restaurants, some with Dali at table; also included are twelve "hors texte" designed by Dali and signed - in the print - for this publication. Original illustrated cloth boards; fine. In original unclipped (though not priced) stiff, metal foil dust jacket, color illustrated and blind-stamped. A bit of edgewear and rubbing to the dust jacket; near fine.

Chicago: A. C. McClurg & Co, 1913. Small octavo, 110 pages. Index. First edition. Glover (b. 1868) was the author of a series of "Dame Curtsey" books published by McClurg, essentially guides to etiquette, entertaining and cookery for the aspiring classes. Other titles in the series include Dame Curtsey's Book of Novel Entertainments for Every Day in the Year, Dame Curtsey's Book of Guessing Contests, and Dame Curtsey's Book of Etiquette. Includes a good deal on fondant, "a variety of fudges", caramels, pulled candy, brittles, taffies, kisses, puffs, glacéd nuts, popcorn dainties, stuffed dates, prunes and marshmallows. Red half-cloth and printed paper-covered boards; original printed dust jacket (extremely scarce thus). Light soil and wear to jacket, otherwise very good. [Axford, page 110].

Utica, N.Y.: Converse & Co., Job Printers, 38 Arcade, 1884. Octavo (20.8 x 13.7 cm.), 49, [3] pages. Advertisements. FIRST EDITION. A slim but very enjoyable community cookbook, issued by a woman's church group from Utica, in Central New York State. The recipes, in narrative form, are often but not always attributed. Most pleasing is the array of typefaces used throughout, in the recipe titles and especially in the advertisements. Advertisers include S.S. Converse - "Dropsy Treated Free!", A.L. Owens' Dairy Parlors, Ferrill's Ladies' Oyster Parlor, E.E. Corliss' Human Hair Goods, Geo. Clark's Glove and Mitten Factory, and The Casino! amongst many more. ~ "Dame Durden" was a sort of shorthand for "housewife", with origins deep in English folk songs and tales. Dickens' Esther in Bleak House was referred to as Dame Durden and a song about her was sung by Gabriel Oak in Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd. FIRST & ONLY EDITION of the famous Bauhaus manifesto, issued in 2,000 copies, on occasion of the Bauhaus exhibition in August and September 1923. The coloured plates include nine original lithographs by Herbert Bayer, Marcel Breuer, L. Hirschfeld-Mack (2), R. Paris, P. Keler and W. Molar, K. Schmidt (2), and F. Schleifer. The texts are by Walter Gropius, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, László Moholy-Nagy, and Oskar Schlemmer. Tiny abrasions to the corners at the head of spine, otherwise unfaded and fine throughout. Rare.

Some light spotting to pages throughout, otherwise clean and tight, in light brown half morocco with raised bands over green paper covered boards. Linz: Verlage der K.K. Priv. Akademischen Kunst-, Musik- und Buchhandlung, 1828. Thick octavo (18.3 x 10.5 cm.), xvi, 575 pages. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece. Stated Sixth Edition. A significant source of recipes for the classic cuisine of Linz, Austria. Of course it includes the famous Linzer Torte and other local sweet baked treats. The book is divided into ten sections, and contains one thousand seven hundred and fifteen recipes, in narrative form, and "rules for meat and fast days, very clearly and comprehensibly described; along with an appendix in two sections, in which general instruction on cooking in general ... : are also attached: several conveniently arranged menus, along with a complete alphabetical register" (translated from the subtitle). The author was Maria Elisabetha Meixner, née Niederederinn. The book is from the library of hotelier and culinary collector Ferdinand Sperl and displays his bookplate. An historical survey of the date palm, but the daughter of Henry Simon, who was a pioneer of American date palm cultivation, and who undertook four years of travel in the Sahara (1910-1914) in search of cultivars. The photographic illustrations in the book are from the elder's trip. Near fine in publisher's green cloth, in a near very good dust jacket with a few closed tears. Inscribed by the author on the free front end paper, "To M..., with love, Hilda Simon."

The first book written independently by Margaret Symonds, daughter of John Addington Symonds, and published in the year of his death. Together with her father, they wrote Our Life in the Swiss Highlands (published in 1892). Foxing to some pages; abrasion mark to free rear endpaper. Original brick-red cloth, decorated and titled in black and gold. Some light spotting, and rubbing to corners. Still very good.

Platina (Bartolomeo Sacchi) examines the mode of living most beneficial to the human body, the pleasures of the table, and how to best enjoy one's meals and have good health. He discourses upon the quality of various meats, fish, fruits and vegetables, the best manner to prepare them, and the correct sauces to be served with various dishes. Kreysig was physician to Frédéric Auguste King of the Saxons, from 1803 to 1828. His greatest contribution was to the art of diagnosis. A promotional brochure for various gins produced by Peoria-based Corning & Company Distillers, the "Largest Independent Distillery in the United States", with information about the jenever-style DeRuyter, Coronet Dry Gin, and Coronet Old Tom. Includes essays on Dry Gins and Holland Gin, both extracted from the Steward's Bulletin of 1907, as well as calendars for the years 1907 and 1908. No recipes for cocktails or other mixed drinks are included. Illustrations include bottle of each of the spirits discussed, and the distillery. In chromo-lithographically produced wrappers, with the image of a smoking Dutchman enjoying a DeRuyter's gin. Small abrasion to front wrapper, otherwise very good. Unrecorded.
